But of the mythographers, those who introduce the god in a bodily form agree in attributing to him the discovery and cultivation of the vine and all the preparation of wine, but they dispute whether there has been more than one Dionysus.
For some declare that one and the same person was the one who showed the methods of winemaking and the harvesting of what are called "tree-fruits," the one who made a campaign over the whole inhabited world, and furthermore, the one who introduced the mysteries, initiations, and Bacchic revels; while others, as I have said before, supposing that three had existed at different times, attribute to each his own particular deeds.
And they say that the oldest one was an Indian, and since his country, owing to the mild temperature, produced much vine spontaneously, he was the first to press the clusters of grapes and devise the practical use of the nature of wine, and in like manner to give the proper care to figs and other tree-fruits, and in general to devise the methods for the harvesting and storing of these fruits.
And they say that the same person also had a long beard, because it is a custom among the Indians to grow their beards carefully until their death.
Now this Dionysus, having traversed the whole inhabited world with an army, taught both the cultivation of the vine and the pressing of the grapes in the wine-presses; from which circumstance he was named Lenaeus.
In like manner, having shared his other discoveries with all, he obtained, after his departure from among men, immortal honor from those who had benefited by them.
And they say that there are shown among the Indians down to the present time both the place where the god happened to be born and the names of cities derived from him in the dialect of the inhabitants; and that many other remarkable proofs of his birth among the Indians remain, concerning which it would be a long task to write.
