these events, having marched against the Sydracae and those called Malli, populous and warlike nations, he found that the natives had assembled more than eighty thousand infantry, ten thousand cavalry, and seven hundred chariots.
Before the arrival of Alexander, these peoples had been at war with one another, but as the king approached their territory, they came to an agreement and were reconciled through this intermarriage, giving and receiving ten thousand young women. did not, however, come down together to offer battle, but quarreling once more over the leadership, they withdrew to the neighboring cities.
But Alexander, having approached the first city, intended to besiege it by direct assault. indeed one of the seers, Demophon by name, came up to him and said that, by certain omens, it was foreshown to the king that a great danger from a wound would befall him during the siege.
Therefore he urged Alexander to leave this city for the present, and to turn his mind to other actions. the king rebuked him for impeding the courage of those who were fighting, and having himself arranged the matters concerning the siege, he led the way to the city first, being eager to subdue it by force.
Since the siege engines were lagging behind, he himself first cut through a postern gate and, bursting into the city, struck down many, and routing the rest, drove them into the citadel. the Macedonians were still delayed in the assault on the wall, he snatched a ladder, placed it against the walls of the citadel, and holding his shield over his head, began to ascend.
Since the quickness of his action anticipated the barbarians fighting in the front, he quickly stepped onto the wall. the Indians did not dare to come to close quarters, but hurled javelins and shot arrows from a distance, the king was hard pressed by the multitude of missiles; but the Macedonians, having placed two ladders, were ascending by them in crowds, when both ladders were shattered and they were brought down to the ground.
