Nevertheless, though many were discontented with him, he conciliated them with gifts; but he himself, having learned that Satibarzanes, the satrap of Areia, had put to death the soldiers left behind by him, and was in agreement with Bessus and had decided to wage war along with him against the Macedonians, marched against him.
Satibarzanes assembled his forces at Chortacana, a most prominent city in these parts and outstanding for its natural strength.
When the king drew near, he was struck with awe by the magnitude of the force and the celebrated valor of the Macedonians.
Therefore, he himself rode out with two thousand cavalry to Bessus to urge him to bring aid quickly, and ordered the rest to flee to a mountain so called, which had many difficult passes and places of refuge suitable for those who did not dare to risk a face-to-face conflict.
When they had executed his order, the king, displaying his usual ambition, actively besieged those who had fled to a certain strong and large rock, and forced them to surrender themselves.
After this, having acquired all the cities in this satrapy within thirty days, he advanced from Hyrcania, and having completed his journey to the palace of Drangiana, he stayed there and let his army recuperate.
