§17.47.1τοῦ γὰρ προϋπάρχοντος βασιλέως Στράτωνος διὰ τὴν πρὸς Δαρεῖον φιλίαν ἐκπεσόντος ἐκ τῆς ἀρχῆς ὁ Ἀλέξανδρος ἔδωκεν ἐξουσίαν Ἡφαιστίωνι καταστῆσαι βασιλέα τῆς Τύρου τῶν ἰδιοξένων ὃν ἂν προαιρῆται.
For since the previous king, Straton, had been deprived of his rule because of his friendship with Darius, Alexander gave authority to Hephaestion to establish as king of Tyre whichever of his own personal guest-friends he might choose.
§17.47.2τὸ μὲν οὖν πρῶτον οὗτος εὐδοκήσας τῷ ξένῳ, παρʼ ᾧ τὴν ἐπισταθμίαν ἐπεποίητο κεχαρισμένως, τοῦτον ἐπεβάλετο κύριον ἀναγορεῦσαι τῆς πόλεως·
At first, therefore, Hephaestion, wishing to favor the guest-friend with whom he had lodged in a very pleasant manner, set about to declare this man the ruler of the city.
ὁ δὲ πλούτῳ μὲν καὶ δόξῃ διαφέρων τῶν πολιτῶν, οὐδεμίαν δὲ συγγένειαν ἔχων πρὸς τοὺς προγεγονότας βασιλεῖς οὐκ ἐδέξατο τὴν δωρεάν.
But he, although preeminent among the citizens in wealth and reputation, having no kinship with the former kings, did not accept the gift.
§17.47.3τοῦ δʼ Ἡφαιστίωνος ἐπιτρέψαντος αὐτῷ τὴν ἐκλογὴν ποιήσασθαι ἐκ τοῦ γένους τῶν βασιλέων ἔφησεν εἶναί τινα τῆς βασιλικῆς οἰκίας ἀπόγονον τὰ μὲν ἄλλα σώφρονα καὶ ἀγαθὸν ἄνδρα, πένητα δὲ καθʼ ὑπερβολήν.
When Hephaestion permitted him to make the choice from the royal family, he said that there was a certain descendant of the royal house, who was in other respects a prudent and good man, but exceedingly poor.
§17.47.4συγχωρήσαντος δὲ τοῦ Ἡφαιστίωνος τούτῳ τὴν δυναστείαν ὁ λαβὼν τὴν ἐπιτροπὴν κατήντησεν ἐπὶ τὸν ὠνομασμένον μετὰ βασιλικῆς ἐσθῆτος καὶ κατέλαβεν αὐτὸν ἔν τινι κήπῳ μισθοῦ μὲν ἀντλοῦντα, ῥάκεσι δὲ τοῖς τυχοῦσιν ἐσθῆτι χρώμενον.
When Hephaestion agreed to give the sovereignty to this man, the one who had received the commission went to the designated man with royal raiment, and found him in a garden drawing water for hire, and using whatever rags happened to be at hand as clothing.
§17.47.5δηλώσας δὲ τὴν περιπέτειαν καὶ περιθεὶς τὴν βασιλικὴν στολὴν καὶ τὸν ἄλλον τὸν ἁρμόζοντα κόσμον ἀνήγαγεν αὐτὸν εἰς τὴν ἀγορὰν καὶ ἀπέδειξε βασιλέα τῶν Τυρίων.
Having made known to him the turn of fortune and having put on him the royal robe and the other fitting ornaments, he led him up to the marketplace and declared him king of the Tyrians.
§17.47.6ἀσμένως δὲ τοῦ πλήθους προσδεξαμένου καὶ τὸ παράδοξον τῆς τύχης θαυμάσαντος οὗτος μὲν φίλος γενόμενος Ἀλεξάνδρῳ τὴν βασιλείαν ἔσχε παράδειγμα τοῖς ἀγνοοῦσι τὴν τῆς τύχης παράδοξον μεταβολήν·
As the multitude gladly accepted him and marveled at the unexpected turn of fortune, this man, having become a friend to Alexander, held the kingdom as an example to those who are ignorant of the unexpected change of fortune.
ἡμεῖς δʼ ἐπεὶ τὰ περὶ τὸν Ἀλέξανδρον διήλθομεν, μεταληψόμεθα τὴν διήγησιν.
But since we have gone through the deeds of Alexander, we shall shift our narrative.
