§16.8.1περὶ δὲ τοὺς αὐτοὺς καιροὺς Φίλιππος ὁ τῶν Μακεδόνων βασιλεὺς μεγάλῃ παρατάξει νενικηκὼς τοὺς Ἰλλυριοὺς καὶ πάντας τοὺς μέχρι τῆς Λυχνίτιδος καλουμένης λίμνης κατοικοῦντας ὑπηκόους πεποιημένος ἀνέκαμψεν εἰς τὴν Μακεδονίαν, συντεθειμένος ἔνδοξον εἰρήνην πρὸς τοὺς Ἰλλυριούς, περιβόητός τε ὑπάρχων παρὰ τοῖς Μακεδόσιν ἐπὶ τοῖς διʼ ἀνδρείαν κατωρθωμένοις.
About the same time, Philip, the king of the Macedonians, having defeated the Illyrians in a great pitched battle and having made subject all the inhabitants as far as the lake called Lychnitis, returned to Macedonia, having concluded an honorable peace with the Illyrians, and being highly renowned among the Macedonians for the successes achieved through his courage.
§16.8.2μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα τῶν τὴν Ἀμφίπολιν οἰκούντων ἀλλοτρίως πρὸς αὐτὸν διατεθέντων καὶ πολλὰς ἀφορμὰς δόντων εἰς πόλεμον ἐστράτευσεν ἐπʼ αὐτοὺς ἀξιολόγῳ δυνάμει.
After this, since the inhabitants of Amphipolis were hostilely disposed toward him and gave many pretexts for war, he marched against them with a considerable force.
προσαγαγὼν δὲ τοῖς τείχεσι μηχανὰς καὶ προσβολὰς ἐνεργοὺς καὶ συνεχεῖς ποιησάμενος κατέβαλε μὲν τοῖς κριοῖς μέρος τι τοῦ τείχους, παρεισελθὼν δʼ εἰς τὴν πόλιν διὰ τοῦ πτώματος καὶ τῶν ἀντιστάντων πολλοὺς καταβαλὼν ἐκυρίευσε τῆς πόλεως καὶ τοὺς μὲν ἀλλοτρίως πρὸς αὐτὸν διακειμένους ἐφυγάδευσε, τοῖς δʼ ἄλλοις φιλανθρώπως προσηνέχθη.
Bringing siege engines up to the walls and making active and continuous assaults, he threw down a portion of the wall with his battering rams; and having entered the city through the breach and having cut down many of those who opposed him, he made himself master of the city and banished those who were hostilely disposed toward him, but treated the others with kindness.
§16.8.3ἡ δὲ πόλις αὕτη κειμένη κατὰ τῆς Θρᾴκης καὶ τῶν σύνεγγυς τόπων εὐφυῶς πολλὰ συνεβάλετο τῷ Φιλίππῳ πρὸς αὔξησιν.
Now this city, being advantageously situated with respect to Thrace and the neighboring places, contributed much to Philip's increase of power.
εὐθὺ γὰρ τὴν μὲν Πύδναν ἐχειρώσατο, πρὸς δὲ Ὀλυνθίους συμμαχίαν ἔθετο καὶ Ποτίδαιαν ὡμολόγησε περιποιήσειν αὐτοῖς, ὑπὲρ ἧς Ὀλύνθιοι πολλὴν σπουδὴν ἔσχον κυριεῦσαι τῆς πόλεως.
For he immediately subdued Pydna, and concluded an alliance with the Olynthians and promised to secure Potidaea for them, a city which the Olynthians had a great desire to control.
§16.8.4τῶν δʼ Ὀλυνθίων βαρεῖαν πόλιν οἰκούντων καὶ διὰ τὸ πλῆθος τῶν ἐν ταύτῃ ἐνοικούντων πολλὴν ἐχόντων ῥοπὴν εἰς τὸν πόλεμον περιμάχητος ἦν ἡ πόλις τοῖς ἡγεμονίας μείζονος ὀρεγομένοις.
Since the Olynthians inhabited a powerful city and, due to the multitude of those living in it, possessed great weight in war, their city was an object of contention for those who aimed at greater hegemony.
διόπερ οἵ τε Ἀθηναῖοι καὶ ὁ Φίλιππος διεφιλοτιμοῦντο πρὸς ἀλλήλους περὶ τῆς τῶν Ὀλυνθίων συμμαχίας.
For this reason, both the Athenians and Philip vied with one another for the alliance of the Olynthians.
§16.8.5οὐ μὴν ἀλλʼ ὁ Φίλιππος Ποτίδαιαν ἐκπολιορκήσας τὴν μὲν τῶν Ἀθηναίων φρουρὰν ἐξήγαγεν ἐκ τῆς πόλεως καὶ φιλανθρώπως αὐτῇ προσενεγκάμενος ἐξαπέστειλεν εἰς τὰς Ἀθήνας· σφόδρα γὰρ εὐλαβεῖτο τὸν δῆμον τῶν Ἀθηναίων διὰ τὸ βάρος καὶ τὸ ἀξίωμα τῆς πόλεως.
Nevertheless, Philip, having taken Potidaea by siege, led the Athenian garrison out of the city and, having treated it with kindness, sent it away to Athens; for he stood in great awe of the Athenian people because of the weight and reputation of their city.
τὴν δὲ πόλιν ἐξανδραποδισάμενος παρέδωκε τοῖς Ὀλυνθίοις, δωρησάμενος ἅμα καὶ τὰς κατὰ τὴν χώραν κτήσεις.
But having enslaved the city, he handed it over to the Olynthians, having also presented them with the possessions throughout the territory.
§16.8.6μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα παρελθὼν ἐπὶ πόλιν Κρηνίδας ταύτην μὲν ἐπαυξήσας οἰκητόρων πλήθει μετωνόμασε Φιλίππους, ἀφʼ ἑαυτοῦ προσαγορεύσας, τὰ δὲ κατὰ τὴν χώραν χρύσεια μέταλλα παντελῶς ὄντα λιτὰ καὶ ἄδοξα ταῖς κατασκευαῖς ἐπὶ τοσοῦτον ηὔξησεν ὥστε δύνασθαι φέρειν αὐτῷ πρόσοδον πλεῖον ἢ ταλάντων χιλίων.
After this, having come to the city of Crenides, he enlarged it with a multitude of inhabitants and renamed it Philippi, calling it after himself; and the gold mines in its territory, which had been entirely simple and insignificant in their installations, he improved to such an extent that they were able to bring him a revenue of more than a thousand talents.
§16.8.7ἐκ δὲ τούτων ταχὺ σωρεύσας πλοῦτον αἰεὶ μᾶλλον διὰ τὴν εὐπορίαν τῶν χρημάτων εἰς ὑπεροχὴν μεγάλην ἤγαγε τὴν Μακεδονικὴν βασιλείαν· νόμισμα γὰρ χρυσοῦν κόψας τὸ προσαγορευθὲν ἀπʼ ἐκείνου Φιλίππειον μισθοφόρων τε δύναμιν ἀξιόλογον συνεστήσατο καὶ τῶν Ἑλλήνων πολλοὺς διὰ τούτου προετρέψατο προδότας γενέσθαι τῶν πατρίδων.
Having quickly amassed wealth from these sources, he raised the Macedonian kingdom to a great superiority ever more because of the abundance of money; for having minted gold coinage called after him "Philippeion", he both organized a notable force of mercenaries and by means of this induced many of the Greeks to become traitors to their native lands.
ἀλλὰ περὶ μὲν τούτων αἱ κατὰ μέρος πράξεις ἕκαστα δηλώσουσιν, ἡμεῖς δʼ ἐπὶ τὰς συνεχεῖς πράξεις μεταβιβάσομεν τὸν λόγον.
