In Athens, when Apollodorus was archon, the Romans appointed Marcus Valerius and Gaius Sulpicius as consuls.
During their term of office, while the Salaminians in Cyprus were being besieged by Evagoras and Phocion, all the other cities submitted to the Persians, but Pnytagoras, who was king of Salamis, alone withstood the siege.
Evagoras was seeking to recover his ancestral rule over the Salaminians, and was effecting his restoration to the kingship through the king of the Persians.
But after this, when he was slandered to Artaxerxes and the king supported Pnytagoras, Evagoras, despairing of his return and having defended himself against the accusations, was deemed worthy of another, larger command in Asia.
However, having misgoverned the affairs of his command, he fled again to Cyprus, and being captured, was punished.
Pnytagoras, having voluntarily submitted to the Persians, for the future ruled over Salamis without fear.
The king of the Persians, after the capture of Sidon, when the allies from Argos, Thebes, and the Greek cities in Asia had arrived to him, assembled his entire force and advanced against Egypt.
Arriving at the Great Lake, near which are the places called the Pitfalls (Barathra), he lost a part of his force due to lack of acquaintance with the localities.
Since we have already spoken in the First Book about the nature of this lake and the extraordinary disaster connected with it, we shall omit repeating the same things.
Having passed through the Pitfalls with his force, the king came to Pelusium; this is a city at the first mouth, at the place where the Nile makes its outlets.
Now the Persians encamped forty stades away from Pelusium, while the Greeks encamped close to the town itself.
The Egyptians, since the Persians had given them plenty of time for preparation, had well fortified all the mouths of the Nile, especially the one at Pelusium because it was the first and the most advantageously situated.
Five thousand soldiers were guarding the place under the command of Philophron the Spartan.
But the Thebans, eager to show themselves the best of the allied Greeks, dared recklessly to cross first and alone through a certain narrow and deep canal.
When they had crossed and were attacking the walls, those guarding Pelusium poured out of the city and joined battle with the Thebans.
A great struggle having taken place because of the emulation on both sides, they spent the whole day in danger on that occasion and were separated by the night.
