Conflict in the Peloponnese and Battle of Chaeroneia

Passage 547 of 723 · Greek

Summary

A war breaks out in the Peloponnese due to the conflict between the Lacedaemonians and the Megalopolitans, drawing in their respective allies for heavy fighting. Meanwhile, the Phocian general Phalaecus captures Chaeroneia but is driven out by the Boeotians, who then ravage Phocis.

At the same time that these things were being done, disturbances and movements also arose in the Peloponnese for reasons of the following sort.
The Lacedaemonians, being at variance with the Megalopolitans, invaded their territory under the leadership of Archidamus; and the Megalopolitans, provoked by these actions and not being a match for them on their own, sent for aid from their allies.
Now the Argives, Sicyonians, and Messenians came to their aid in full force with all speed, while the Thebans dispatched four thousand infantry and five hundred cavalry, having placed Cephision in command as general.
The Megalopolitans, therefore, marching out with their allies, encamped near the sources of the river Alpheus; but the Lacedaemonians received as reinforcements three thousand infantry from the Phocians, and one hundred and fifty cavalry from Lycophron and Peitholaus, who had been expelled from the tyranny in Pherae, and having assembled a force fit to fight, they encamped near Mantinea.
After this, arriving at the city of Orneae in the Argive territory, they succeeded in capturing it by siege before the arrival of the enemy, it being an ally of the Megalopolitans.
And when the Argives marched out against them, they joined battle, defeated them, and slew more than two hundred.
But when the Thebans appeared, who were double in number but inferior in discipline, a fierce battle ensued; and as the victory remained undecided, the Argives and their allies made their return to their own cities, while the Lacedaemonians, invading Arcadia and taking the city of Helisson by storm and plundering it, returned to Sparta.
Some time later, the Thebans along with their allies defeated the enemy near Thelpusa, and having killed many, they took alive Anaxander, the commander, and more than sixty of the others.
A short time after, they had the upper hand in two other battles and laid low not a few of their opponents.
Finally, when the Lacedaemonians won a noteworthy battle, the forces of both sides returned to their own cities.
Then, when the Lacedaemonians made a truce with the Megalopolitans, the Thebans returned to Boeotia.
Meanwhile, Phalaecus, lingering about Boeotia, captured Chaeroneia, but when the Thebans came to its aid, he was driven out of the city.
After this, the Boeotians, marching into Phocis with a large force, ravaged most of it and laid waste the properties throughout the territory; and having taken some also of the small towns and gathered an abundance of booty, they returned to Boeotia.

Notes

  1. 16.39.1ἅμα δὲ τούτοις πραττομένοις — A construction equivalent to a 'dative absolute' accompanied by the preposition ἅμα. Like the typical 'genitive absolute,' it introduces a logical subject (τούτοις) different from that of the main clause to express simultaneity.
  2. 16.39.4ἔφθασαν αὐτὴν ἐκπολιορκήσαντες — A construction where the verb φθάνω is coupled with a participle (here ἐκπολιορκήσαντες) to express the idea of doing something beforehand or anticipating an event. Here it indicates that they captured the city before the enemy could arrive (πρὸ τῆς τῶν πολεμίων παρουσίας).
  3. 16.39.5τῷ μὲν πλήθει διπλασίων ὄντων, ταῖς δʼ εὐταξίαις λειπομένων — The nouns πλήθει and εὐταξίαις function as 'datives of respect' (or specification), defining the domain in which the adjective διπλασίων ('double') and the participle λειπομένων ('inferior') apply, meaning 'in number' and 'in discipline' respectively.
