§15.64.1ἡ μὲν οὖν πρώτη μερὶς ἡ τῶν Βοιωτῶν μέσην τὴν πορείαν ἐποιήσατο ἐπὶ τὴν Σελλασίαν καλουμένην πόλιν, καὶ τοὺς τῇδε κατοικοῦντας ἀπέστησε τῶν Λακεδαιμονίων.
So the first division, consisting of the Boeotians, made their march through the middle route toward the city called Sellasia, and caused its inhabitants to revolt from the Lacedaemonians.
§15.64.2Ἀργεῖοι δὲ κατὰ τοὺς ὅρους τῆς Τεγεάτιδος χώρας ἐμβαλόντες συνῆψαν μάχην τοῖς φρουροῦσι τὰς παρόδους, καὶ τόν τε ἡγεμόνα τῆς φρουρᾶς Ἀλέξανδρον τὸν Σπαρτιάτην ἀνεῖλον καὶ τῶν ἄλλων εἰς διακοσίους ἀπέκτειναν, ἐν οἷς ὑπῆρχον καὶ οἱ τῶν Βοιωτῶν φυγάδες.
The Argives, invading along the borders of the Tegean territory, engaged in battle with those guarding the passes, and killed Alexander the Spartan, the commander of the garrison, and slew about two hundred of the others, among whom were also the Boeotian exiles.
§15.64.3ἡ δὲ τρίτη μερίς, ἐκ τῶν Ἀρκάδων συνεστηκυῖα καὶ στρατιώτας ἔχουσα πλείστους, εἰσέβαλεν εἰς τὴν Σκιρῖτιν καλουμένην χώραν, ἣν παρεφύλαττεν Ἰσχόλας, ἀνὴρ ἀνδρείᾳ καὶ συνέσει διαφέρων, μετὰ πολλῶν στρατιωτῶν.
The third division, composed of the Arcadians and containing the greatest number of soldiers, invaded the territory called Sciritis, which Ischolas, a man outstanding in courage and intelligence, was guarding with many soldiers.
οὗτος δὲ τῶν ἐπιφανεστάτων στρατιωτῶν ἐπετελέσατο πρᾶξιν ἡρωικὴν καὶ μνήμης ἀξίαν.
This man, as one of the most distinguished soldiers, performed a heroic deed worthy of memory.
§15.64.4ὁρῶν γὰρ ὅτι διὰ τὸ πλῆθος τῶν πολεμίων πάντες οἱ συνάψαντες μάχην ἀναιρεθήσονται, τὸ μὲν λιπεῖν τὴν ἐν ταῖς παρόδοις τάξιν ἀνάξιον τῆς Σπάρτης ἔκρινε, τὸ δὲ διασῶσαι τοὺς στρατιώτας χρήσιμον ἔσεσθαι τῇ πατρίδι· διὸ παραδόξως ἀμφοτέρων προενοήθη, καὶ τὴν γενομένην ποτὲ περὶ Θερμοπύλας ἀνδρείαν τοῦ βασιλέως Λεωνίδου φιλοτίμως ἐμιμήσατο.
For seeing that because of the multitude of the enemy all who engaged in battle would be destroyed, he judged that to abandon his post in the passes was unworthy of Sparta, but that to save his soldiers would be useful to his fatherland; therefore, in an extraordinary way, he provided for both, and zealously emulated the courage of King Leonidas once shown at Thermopylae.
§15.64.5διαλέξας γὰρ τοὺς νέους, τούτους μὲν ἀπέστειλεν εἰς τὴν Σπάρτην, χρησίμους ἐσομένους τῇ κινδυνευούσῃ περὶ τῶν ὅλων· αὐτὸς δὲ μετὰ τῶν πρεσβυτέρων φυλάττων τὴν τάξιν καὶ πολλοὺς ἀνελὼν τῶν πολεμίων, κυκλωθεὶς ὑπὸ τῶν Ἀρκάδων μετὰ πάντων ἀνῃρέθη.
For having selected the young men, he sent them away to Sparta, as they would be useful to the state which was in danger regarding its very existence; but he himself, keeping his post with the older men and having slain many of the enemy, was surrounded by the Arcadians and killed along with all his men.
§15.64.6Ἠλεῖοι δὲ τὴν τετάρτην μοῖραν ἔχοντες, καὶ κατʼ ἄλλους τόπους πεπταμένους διελθόντες, εἰς τὴν Ἑλλασίαν παρεγένοντο· εἰς τοῦτον γὰρ τὸν τόπον πᾶσι καταντᾶν παρήγγελτο.
The Eleans, holding the fourth division, and having passed through other open areas, arrived at Hellasia; for orders had been given to all to meet at this place.
ἀθροισθείσης δὲ ἁπάσης τῆς δυνάμεως εἰς τὴν Ἑλλασίαν, προῆγον ἐπʼ αὐτὴν τὴν Σπάρτην πορθοῦντες ἅμα καὶ πυρπολοῦντες τὴν χώραν.
When the entire force had assembled at Hellasia, they advanced against Sparta itself, at the same time plundering and burning the countryside.
