§14.86.1ἐν δὲ τῇ Κορίνθῳ τινὲς τῶν ἐπιθυμούντων δημοκρατίας συστραφέντες ἀγώνων ὄντων ἐν τῷ θεάτρῳ φόνον ἐποίησαν καὶ στάσεως ἐπλήρωσαν τὴν πόλιν· συνεπιλαβομένων δὲ αὐτοῖς τῆς τόλμης Ἀργείων, ἑκατὸν μὲν καὶ εἴκοσι τῶν πολιτῶν ἀπέσφαξαν, πεντακοσίους δʼ ἐφυγάδευσαν.
In Corinth, some of those who desired a democracy, having banded together while games were being held in the theatre, committed slaughter and filled the city with sedition; and since the Argives assisted them in their bold undertaking, they massacred one hundred and twenty of the citizens and banished five hundred.
§14.86.2Λακεδαιμονίων δὲ παρασκευαζομένων κατάγειν καὶ δύναμιν ἀθροιζόντων, Ἀθηναῖοι καὶ Βοιωτοὶ παρεβοήθουν τοῖς σφαγεῦσιν, ὅπως τὴν πόλιν ἐξιδιοποιήσωνται.
While the Lacedaemonians were preparing to restore the exiles and were gathering a force, the Athenians and the Boeotians came to the aid of the murderers, in order to make the city their own.
§14.86.3καὶ οἱ μὲν φυγάδες μετὰ Λακεδαιμονίων καὶ τῶν συμμάχων ἐπὶ τὸ Λέχαιον καὶ τὸν ναύσταθμον ἐπελθόντες νυκτὸς κατὰ κράτος εἷλαν· τῇ δʼ ὑστεραίᾳ τῶν ἐκ τῆς πόλεως ἐπεξελθόντων, ὧν Ἰφικράτης ἡγεῖτο, συνέβη γενέσθαι μάχην, ἐν ᾗ Λακεδαιμόνιοι νικήσαντες οὐκ ὀλίγους ἀπέκτειναν.
And the exiles, together with the Lacedaemonians and their allies, advanced against Lechaeum and the naval station and took them by storm at night; and on the following day, when those from the city sallied forth, whom Iphicrates led, it happened that a battle took place, in which the Lacedaemonians were victorious and killed not a few.
§14.86.4μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα οἵ τε Βοιωτοὶ καὶ Ἀθηναῖοι, πρὸς δὲ τούτοις Ἀργεῖοι καὶ Κορίνθιοι πάσῃ τῇ δυνάμει παρελθόντες εἰς τὸ Λέχαιον, τὸ μὲν πρῶτον πολιορκήσαντες τὸ χωρίον τὸ ἐντὸς τοῦ διατειχίσματος εἰσεβιάζοντο· μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα τῶν Λακεδαιμονίων καὶ τῶν φυγάδων λαμπρῶς ἀγωνισαμένων ἐξεώσθησαν οἱ Βοιωτοὶ καὶ οἱ μετʼ αὐτῶν ἅπαντες.
After this, the Boeotians and Athenians, and in addition to these the Argives and Corinthians, advanced with all their forces to Lechaeum, and at first they besieged the place and forced their way inside the palisade; but after this, when the Lacedaemonians and the exiles fought brilliantly, the Boeotians and all those with them were driven out.
οὗτοι μὲν οὖν περὶ χιλίους τῶν στρατιωτῶν ἀποβαλόντες εἰς τὴν πόλιν ἀπεχώρησαν.
These, then, having lost about a thousand of their soldiers, retreated to the city.
§14.86.5εὐθὺ δὲ τῶν Ἰσθμίων ἐπελθόντων διεφέροντο περὶ τῆς θέσεως τοῦ ἀγῶνος· καὶ πολλὰ φιλονεικησάντων ἐκράτησαν οἱ Λακεδαιμόνιοι καὶ τοὺς φυγάδας ἐποίησαν θεῖναι τὸν ἀγῶνα,
And as soon as the Isthmian games came on, they disputed about the location of the contest; and after much rivalry, the Lacedaemonians prevailed and made the exiles hold the games.
§14.86.6τῶν δὲ κατὰ τὸν πόλεμον δεινῶν σχεδόν τι περὶ τὴν Κόρινθον γενομένων ὁ πόλεμος οὗτος ἐκλήθη Κορινθιακός, καὶ διέμεινεν ἔτη ὀκτώ.
Since the hardships of the war occurred almost entirely around Corinth, this war was called the Corinthian War, and it lasted for eight years.
