§14.60.1οἱ δὲ Καρχηδόνιοι ὡς εἶδον τὸν αἰγιαλὸν τῶν πεζῶν πλήρη καὶ τὰς Ἑλληνικὰς ναῦς ἐπιφερομένας, παραχρῆμα μὲν οὐ μετρίως ἠγωνίασαν, καὶ πρὸς τὴν γῆν ἐπεχείρησαν καταπλεῖν·
When the Carchedonians saw the shore full of infantry and the Greek ships bearing down on them, they were immediately in no small anxiety and attempted to sail toward the land.
μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα λογισάμενοι, διότι κινδυνεύσουσιν ἀπολέσθαι πρὸς τὰς ναῦς ἅμα καὶ τοὺς πεζοὺς μαχόμενοι, ταχέως μετενόησαν.
But afterward, calculating that they would run the risk of destruction if they fought against the ships and the infantry at the same time, they quickly changed their minds.
κρίναντες οὖν ναυμαχεῖν, διέταττον τὰς ναῦς καὶ τὸν τῶν πολεμίων ἐπίπλουν ἐκαραδόκουν.
Deciding, therefore, to fight a sea-battle, they drew up their ships and awaited the attack of the enemy.
§14.60.2Λεπτίνης δὲ τριάκοντα ναυσὶ ταῖς ἀρίσταις πολὺ τῶν ἄλλων προάγων, οὐκ ἀνάνδρως μέν, ἀβούλως δὲ διηγωνίσατο.
Leptines, advancing far ahead of the others with thirty of his best ships, fought not in a cowardly manner, but indiscreetly.
εὐθὺς γὰρ ἐπιθέμενος ταῖς πρώταις τῶν Καρχηδονίων, τὸ μὲν πρῶτον οὐκ ὀλίγας κατέδυσε τῶν ἀντιτεταγμένων τριήρων· τοῦδὲ Μάγωνος ἀθρόαις ταῖς ναυσὶ ταῖς τριάκοντα περιχυθέντος, ταῖς μὲν ἀρεταῖς ὑπερεῖχον οἱ περὶ τὸν Λεπτίνην, τοῖς δὲ πλήθεσιν οἱ Καρχηδόνιοι.
For immediately attacking the foremost of the Carchedonians, at first he sank not a few of the triremes drawn up against him; but when Mago with all his ships crowded around those thirty, while those with Leptines surpassed them in valor, the Carchedonians surpassed them in numbers.
§14.60.3διὸ καὶ τῆς μάχης ἰσχυροτέρας γινομένης, καὶ τῶν κυβερνητῶν ἐκ παραβολῆς τὸν ἀγῶνα συνισταμένων, ὅμοιος ὁ κίνδυνος ταῖς ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς παρατάξεσιν ἐγίνετο.
Therefore, as the battle became more violent and the helmsmen engaged in the contest by bringing their ships alongside, the danger became similar to pitched battles on land.
οὐ γὰρ ἐκ διαστήματος τοῖς ἐμβόλοις εἰς τὰς τῶν πολεμίων ναῦς ἐνέσειον, ἀλλὰ συμπλεκομένων τῶν σκαφῶν ἐκ χειρὸς διηγωνίζοντο.
For they did not strike the ships of the enemy with their rams from a distance, but as the vessels became entangled, they fought hand-to-hand.
τινὲς μὲν ἐπὶ τὰς τῶν ἐναντίων ναῦς ἐπιπηδῶντες ἔπιπτον εἰς τὴν θάλατταν, τινὲς δὲ κρατήσαντες τῆς ἐπιβολῆς ἐν ταῖς τῶν πολεμίων ναυσὶν ἠγωνίζοντο.
Some, leaping onto the ships of the adversaries, fell into the sea, while others, securing a footing, fought on the ships of the enemy.
§14.60.4τέλος δὲ ὁ μὲν Λεπτίνης ἐκβιασθεὶς ἠναγκάσθη φυγεῖν εἰς τὸ πέλαγος, αἱ δὲ λοιπαὶ τῶν νεῶν ἀτάκτως τὸν ἐπίπλουν ποιούμεναι ὑπὸ τῶν Καρχηδονίων ἐχειροῦντο· καὶ γὰρ τὸ περὶ τὸν ναύαρχον ἐλάττωμα τοὺς Φοίνικας εὐθαρσεστέρους ἐποίησεν, τοὺς δὲ Σικελιώτας οὐκ εἰς τὴν τυχοῦσαν ἀθυμίαν ἤγαγεν.
At last Leptines, being forced back, was compelled to flee into the open sea, and the remaining of the ships, making their approach in disorder, were overcome by the Carchedonians; for indeed the setback concerning the admiral made the Phoenicians more courageous, and brought the Siceliotes to no ordinary despondency.
§14.60.5τῆς δὲ μάχης τοιοῦτον λαβούσης τὸ τέλος, οἱ Καρχηδόνιοι τοὺς ἀτάκτως φεύγοντας σφᾶς φιλοτιμότερον διώξαντες διέφθειραν μὲν ναῦς πλείους τῶν ἑκατόν, τὰ δʼ ὑπηρετικὰ παρὰ τὸν αἰγιαλὸν καταστήσαντες ἀνῄρουν τῶν ναυτῶν τοὺς διανηχομένους πρὸς τὸ πεζὸν στρατόπεδον.
The battle having taken such an end, the Carchedonians pursued those fleeing from them in disorder with greater eagerness and destroyed more than a hundred ships, and stationing their auxiliary boats along the shore, they killed those of the sailors who were swimming toward the camp of the infantry.
§14.60.6πολλῶν δʼ ἀπολλυμένων οὐ μακρὰν τῆς γῆς, τῶν περὶ τὸν Διονύσιον οὐδαμῶς δυναμένων βοηθῆσαι, πᾶς ὁ τόπος ἔγεμε νεκρῶν καὶ ναυαγίων.
With many perishing not far from the land, while those with Dionysius were in no way able to help, the whole place was full of corpses and wrecks.
ἀπώλοντο μὲν οὖν ἐν τῇ ναυμαχίᾳ τῶν μὲν Καρχηδονίων οὐκ ὀλίγοι, τῶν δὲ Σικελιωτῶν ναῦς μὲν πλείω τῶν ἑκατόν, ἄνδρες δʼ ὑπὲρ τοὺς δισμυρίους.
Thus there perished in the sea-battle not a few of the Carchedonians, and of the Siceliotes more than a hundred ships, and over twenty thousand men.
§14.60.7ἀπὸ δὲ τῆς μάχης οἱ μὲν Φοίνικες περὶ τὴν Κατάνην ὁρμίσαντες τὰς τριήρεις, ἀνήψαντο τὰς αἰχμαλώτους ναῦς, καὶ καθελκύσαντες αὐτὰς ἐθεράπευον, ὥστε τοῖς Καρχηδονίοις μὴ μόνον ἀκουστόν, ἀλλὰ καὶ θεωρητὸν ποιῆσαι τὸ μέγεθος τοῦ προτερήματος.
After the battle, the Phoenicians, having moored their triremes near Catane, lashed the captured ships to their own, and launching them, they refitted them, so as to make the greatness of their success not only heard of, but also visible to the Carchedonians.
