When this year had passed, Ithycles was archon in Athens, and in Rome five military tribunes were established instead of consuls, Lucius Julius, Marcus Furius, Marcus Aemilius, Gaius Cornelius, and Kaeso Fabius.
As for Dionysius, the tyrant of the Syracusans, when most of the works concerning the making of arms and shipbuilding had reached completion, he immediately turned his attention to the preparation of the soldiers.
Therefore, he enrolled the suitable Syracusans into the ranks, and summoned from the cities placed under him those who were fit.
He also gathered mercenaries from Greece, and especially from the Lacedaemonians; for they, helping him to increase his power, gave him permission to levy as many mercenaries from them as he wished.
On the whole, since he was eager to assemble his mercenary force from many nations and promised high pay, he found those who would answer his call.
Since he was about to stir up a great war, he treated the cities throughout the island with kindness, inviting their goodwill.
On the other hand, seeing that the Rhegians and Messenians who dwelt along the strait possessed a sufficient organized force, he was cautious lest, when the Carthaginians crossed over to Sicily, they should join them; for these cities possessed no small weight, on whichever side they should ally themselves in the war.
Being exceedingly anxious about these matters, Dionysius gave the Messenians much of the neighboring territory, making them his own by these benefits.
To the Rhegians he dispatched ambassadors, urging them to establish a right of intermarriage and to give him one of the citizens' daughters to live with him as his wife; and he promised them that he would acquire much of the bordering territory for them, and would increase their city as far as he himself had power.
For since his wife, who was the daughter of Hermocrates, had been slain during the revolt of the cavalry, he was eager to beget children, believing that through the goodwill of his offspring he would maintain his dynasty most securely.
Nevertheless, when an assembly was gathered in Rhegium on these matters and many speeches were delivered, it seemed best to the Rhegians not to accept the intermarriage.
Dionysius, having failed in this attempt, dispatched the ambassadors concerning the same matters to the people of the Locrians.
When they voted for the intermarriage, Dionysius wooed Doris, the daughter of Xenetus, who was at that time the most distinguished of the citizens.
A few days before the wedding, he sent to Locri a quinquereme newly built, adorned with silver and gold decorations; and transporting the maiden on this ship to Syracuse, he brought her into the acropolis.
He also wooed Aristomache, the most illustrious of the women among the citizens, and sending a chariot drawn by four white horses for her, he brought her into his own house.
