Xenophon in Thrace and the Death of Socrates

Passage 331 of 723 · Greek

Summary

The remnant of Cyrus' Greek mercenaries under Xenophon campaigns in Thrace before joining Thibron's force, alongside reports of other contemporary events: Dionysius founds Adranon in Sicily, Archelaus of Macedon dies and is succeeded, and Socrates is executed in Athens, leading to the people's regret.

About the same time, of those who had campaigned with Cyrus and had returned safely to Greece, some departed to their own homelands, but the majority, accustomed to living a military life and numbering nearly five thousand, chose Xenophon as their general. Having taken over this force, he set out to make war on the Thracians who dwelt around Salmydessus; this place is on the left of the Pontus, and extending as it does over a great distance, it causes a very great number of shipwrecks. Now the Thracians were accustomed to lie in wait about these regions and to enslave those of the merchants who were cast ashore; but Xenophon, having invaded their territory with the assembled soldiers, defeated them in battle and burned most of their villages. After this, when Thibron sent for them and promised to give them pay, they departed to him and fought alongside the Lacedaemonians against the Persians. While these things were being done, Dionysius in Sicily founded a city at the very foot of Mount Aetna, and named it Adranon after a certain famous temple. In Macedonia, King Archelaus, having been accidentally struck in a certain hunt by Craterus, his beloved, departed this life after reigning seven years; Orestes succeeded to the rule, being a child, but Aeropus, who was his guardian, slew him and held the kingship for six years. In Athens, Socrates the philosopher, having been accused by Anytus and Meletus of impiety and corruption of the youth, was condemned to death and died by drinking hemlock.
But since the accusation had been unjust, the people repented when they saw that such a great man had been destroyed; therefore, they held the accusers in anger and finally put them to death without trial.

Notes

  1. 14.37.2ὥρμησε πολεμήσων — The future active participle πολεμήσων is used with the verb of motion ὥρμησε (aorist of ὁρμάω) to express purpose ('in order to make war').
  2. 14.37.3τοὺς ἐκπίπτοντας τῶν ἐμπόρων — τοὺς ἐκπίπτοντας is a substantivized present participle meaning 'those cast ashore (by shipwreck)', while the genitive τῶν ἐμπόρων depends on it as a partitive genitive ('those of the merchants who...').
  3. 14.37.7ἀδίκου δὲ τῆς κατηγορίας γεγενημένης — A genitive absolute construction. The subject is τῆς κατηγορίας and the predicate adjective is ἀδίκου, forming an adverbial clause of cause or time ('since the accusation had been unjust' or 'when the accusation turned out to be unjust').
