§13.8.1καὶ μετʼ ὀλίγας ἡμέρας μετὰ τῶν Συρακοσίων ἐξήγαγε τὴν δύναμιν ἐπὶ τοὺς Ἀθηναίους.
And after a few days, Gylippus led out the force with the Syracusans against the Athenians.
γενομένης δὲ μάχης ἰσχυρᾶς Λάμαχος ὁ τῶν Ἀθηναίων στρατηγὸς μαχόμενος ἐτελεύτησε· πολλῶν δὲ παρʼ ἀμφοτέρων ἀναιρεθέντων ἐνίκησαν Ἀθηναῖοι.
A fierce battle taking place, Lamachus the Athenian general died while fighting; and although many were slain on both sides, the Athenians won.
§13.8.2μετὰ δὲ τὴν μάχην παραγενομένων τρισκαίδεκα τριήρων ἐκ Κορίνθου, τοὺς ἐκ τῶν πληρωμάτων ἀναλαβὼν ὁ Γύλιππος μετὰ τῶν Συρακοσίων προσέβαλε τῇ παρεμβολῇ τῶν πολεμίων, καὶ τὰς Ἐπιπολὰς ἐπολιόρκει.
After the battle, when thirteen triremes arrived from Corinth, Gylippus, taking the men from the crews, attacked the camp of the enemy together with the Syracusans, and besieged Epipolae.
ἐξελθόντων δὲ τῶν Ἀθηναίων συνῆψαν μάχην οἱ Συρακόσιοι, καὶ πολλοὺς τῶν Ἀθηναίων ἀποκτείναντες ἐνίκησαν, καὶ διʼ ὅλης τῆς Ἐπιπολῆς τὸ τεῖχος κατέσκαψαν· οἱ δʼ Ἀθηναῖοι καταλιπόντες τὸν πρὸς ταῖς Ἐπιπολαῖς τόπον πᾶσαν τὴν δύναμιν εἰς τὴν ἄλλην παρεμβολὴν μετήγαγον.
When the Athenians came out, the Syracusans joined battle, and having killed many of the Athenians, they won and demolished the wall throughout the whole of Epipolae; the Athenians, abandoning the place near Epipolae, transferred their entire force to the other camp.
§13.8.3τούτων δὲ πραχθέντων οἱ Συρακόσιοι μὲν πρέσβεις ἀπέστειλαν εἰς Κόρινθον καὶ Λακεδαίμονα περὶ βοηθείας· οἷς ἀπέστειλαν Κορίνθιοι μετὰ Βοιωτῶν μὲν καὶ Σικυωνίων χιλίους, Σπαρτιᾶται δʼ ἑξακοσίους·
When these things were done, the Syracusans dispatched ambassadors to Corinth and Lacedaemon for aid; to them the Corinthians sent one thousand men along with Boeotians and Sicyonians, and the Spartans sent six hundred.
§13.8.4Γύλιππος δὲ περιπορευόμενος τὰς κατὰ Σικελίαν πόλεις πολλοὺς προετρέπετο συμμαχεῖν, καὶ λαβὼν στρατιώτας παρά τε τῶν Ἱμεραίων καὶ Σικανῶν τρισχιλίους ἦγε διὰ τῆς μεσογείου.
Gylippus, going around the cities throughout Sicily, urged many to ally, and taking three thousand soldiers from the Himeraeans and Sicanians, he led them through the interior.
πυθόμενοι δὲ οἱ Ἀθηναῖοι τὴν παρουσίαν αὐτῶν, ἐπιθέμενοι τοὺς ἡμίσεις ἀνεῖλον· οἱ δὲ περιλειφθέντες διεσώθησαν εἰς Συρακούσας.
But the Athenians, learning of their arrival, attacked them and destroyed half of them; those who were left escaped safely to Syracuse.
§13.8.5ἐλθόντων δὲ τῶν συμμάχων οἱ Συρακόσιοι βουλόμενοι καὶ τῶν κατὰ θάλατταν ἀγώνων ἀντιποιεῖσθαι, τάς τε προϋπαρχούσας ναῦς καθείλκυσαν καὶ ἄλλας προσκατασκευάσαντες.
When the allies arrived, the Syracusans, wishing also to lay claim to the contests at sea, launched their existing ships and constructed others in addition.
ἐν τῷ μικρῷ λιμένι τὰς ἀναπείρας ἐποιοῦντο.
In the small harbour they conducted training maneuvers.
§13.8.6Νικίας δὲ ὁ τῶν Ἀθηναίων στρατηγὸς ἀπέστειλεν εἰς Ἀθήνας ἐπιστολάς, ἐν αἷς ἐδήλου ὅτι πολλοὶ πάρεισι σύμμαχοι τοῖς Συρακοσίοις, καὶ διότι ναῦς οὐκ ὀλίγας πληρώσαντες ναυμαχεῖν διέγνωσαν· κατὰ τάχος οὖν ἠξίου τριήρεις τε πέμπειν καὶ χρήματα καὶ στρατηγοὺς τοὺς συνδιοικήσοντας τὸν πόλεμον· Ἀλκιβιάδου μὲν γὰρ πεφευγότος, Λαμάχου δὲ τετελευτηκότος αὐτὸν μόνον ἀπολελεῖφθαι, καὶ ταῦτʼ ἀσθενῶς διακείμενον.
Nicias, the Athenian general, dispatched letters to Athens, in which he made clear that many allies were present for the Syracusans, and that, having manned not a few ships, they had decided to fight a sea battle; he therefore requested them to send with all speed triremes, money, and generals to share in the management of the war; for Alcibiades having fled and Lamachus having died, he himself had been left alone, and that too while in a state of illness.
§13.8.7οἱ δʼ Ἀθηναῖοι μετʼ Εὐρυμέδοντος μὲν τοῦ στρατηγοῦ δέκα ναῦς ἀπέστειλαν εἰς Σικελίαν καὶ ἀργυρίου τάλαντα ἑκατὸν τεσσαράκοντα περὶ τὰς χειμερινὰς τροπάς· περὶ δὲ τὴν ἐαρινὴν ὥραν παρεσκευάζοντο μέγαν στόλον ἀποστέλλειν.
The Athenians dispatched ten ships to Sicily with Eurymedon the general, and one hundred and forty talents of silver, about the winter solstice; and about springtime they prepared to send a large fleet.
διόπερ στρατιώτας τε πανταχόθεν παρὰ τῶν συμμάχων κατέγραφον καὶ χρήματα συνήθροιζον.
For this reason they were enrolling soldiers from all quarters among the allies and gathering money.
§13.8.8κατὰ δὲ τὴν Πελοπόννησον οἱ Λακεδαιμόνιοι παροξυνθέντες ὑπὸ Ἀλκιβιάδου τὰς σπονδὰς ἔλυσαν τὰς πρὸς Ἀθηναίους, καὶ ὁ πόλεμος οὗτος διέμεινεν ἔτη δώδεκα.
In the Peloponnesus, the Lacedaemonians, instigated by Alcibiades, broke the treaty with the Athenians, and this war lasted for twelve years.
