And a two-horse chariot race was also added during the same Olympiad, and among the Lacedaemonians King Pleistoanax died after ruling for fifty years, and Pausanias, having succeeded to the rule, governed for fourteen years.
οἱ δὲ τὴν Ῥόδον νῆσον κατοικοῦντες καὶ Ἰηλυσὸν καὶ Λίνδον καὶ Κάμειρον μετῳκίσθησαν εἰς μίαν πόλιν τὴν νῦν καλουμένην Ῥόδον.
And those who inhabited the island of Rhodes—namely Ialysos, Lindos, and Kameiros—migrated into one city, the one now called Rhodes.
§13.75.2Ἑρμοκράτης δʼ ὁ Συρακόσιος ἀναλαβὼν τοὺς μετʼ αὐτοῦ στρατεύοντας ὥρμησεν ἐκ Σελινοῦντος, καὶ παραγενόμενος πρὸς τὴν Ἱμέραν κατεστρατοπέδευσεν ἐν τοῖς προαστείοις τῆς ἀνατετραμμένης πόλεως.
And Hermocrates the Syracusan, taking the soldiers who were with him, set out from Selinus, and having arrived at Himera, he encamped in the suburbs of the ruined city.
διαπυθόμενος δʼ ἐν ᾧ τόπῳ παρετάχθησαν οἱ Συρακόσιοι, τὰ τῶν τετελευτηκότων ὀστᾶ συνήθροιζε, παρασκευάσας δʼ ἁμάξας πολυτελῶς κεκοσμημένας, ἐπὶ τούτων παρεκόμισεν αὐτὰ ἐπὶ τὴν Συράκουσαν.
And having inquired in what place the Syracusan forces had been drawn up, he collected the bones of the dead, and having prepared sumptuously adorned wagons, he conveyed them upon these to Syracuse.
§13.75.3αὐτὸς μὲν οὖν ἐπὶ τῶν ὅρων κατέμεινε διὰ τὸ κωλύεσθαι τοὺς φυγάδας ὑπὸ τῶν νόμων συνιέναι, τῶν δὲ μετʼ αὐτοῦ τινας ἀπέστειλεν, οἳ τὰς ἁμάξας παρεκόμισαν εἰς τὰς Συρακούσας.
He himself, therefore, remained at the borders because the exiles were prevented by the laws from entering, but he sent some of those who were with him, who conveyed the wagons into Syracuse.
§13.75.4ὁ δʼ Ἑρμοκράτης ταῦτα ἔπραττεν, ὅπως ὁ μὲν Διοκλῆς ἀντιπράττων αὐτῷ περὶ τῆς καθόδου, δοκῶν δʼ αἴτιος εἶναι τοῦ περιεωρᾶσθαι τοὺς τετελευτηκότας ἀτάφους, προσκόψαι τοῖς πλήθεσιν, αὐτὸς δὲ φιλανθρώπως τούτοις προσενεχθεὶς ἐπαγάγοι τὸ πλῆθος εἰς τὴν προτέραν εὔνοιαν.
And Hermocrates was doing these things so that Diocles, who was opposing him regarding his return, appearing to be the cause of the dead having been overlooked unburied, might incur the hatred of the masses, while he himself, having dealt with them kindly, might win the multitude back to their former goodwill.
§13.75.5τῶν οὖν ὀστῶν παρακομισθέντων ἐνέπεσεν εἰς τὰ πλήθη στάσις, τοῦ μὲν Διοκλέους κωλύοντος θάπτειν, τῶν δὲ πολλῶν συγκατατιθεμένων.
When the bones had been conveyed, discord fell upon the masses, as Diocles prevented the burial, but the majority agreed to it.
τέλος δʼ οἱ Συρακόσιοι ἔθαψάν τε τὰ λείψανα τῶν τετελευτηκότων καὶ πανδημεὶ τὴν ἐκφορὰν ἐτίμησαν.
In the end, the Syracusans buried the remains of the dead and honored the funeral procession with the whole populace.
καὶ ὁ μὲν Διοκλῆς ἐφυγαδεύθη, τὸν δʼ Ἑρμοκράτην οὐδʼ ὣς προσεδέξαντο· ὑπώπτευον γὰρ τὴν τἀνδρὸς τόλμαν, μήποτε τυχὼν ἡγεμονίας ἀναδείξῃ ἑαυτὸν τύραννον.
And Diocles indeed was exiled, but they did not receive Hermocrates even so; for they suspected the man's audacity, lest, if he should ever obtain leadership, he might declare himself tyrant.
§13.75.6ὁ μὲν οὖν Ἑρμοκράτης τότε τὸν καιρὸν οὐχ ὁρῶν εὔθετον εἰς τὸ βιάσασθαι, πάλιν ἀνεχώρησεν εἰς Σελινοῦντα.
Hermocrates, therefore, not seeing that the time was suitable then for forcing his way, withdrew again to Selinus.
μετὰ δέ τινα χρόνον τῶν φίλων αὐτὸν μεταπεμπομένων ὥρμησε μετὰ τρισχιλίων στρατιωτῶν, καὶ πορευθεὶς διὰ τῆς Γελῴας ἧκε νυκτὸς ἐπὶ τὸν συντεταγμένον τόπον.
But after some time, when his friends were summoning him, he set out with three thousand soldiers, and marching through the territory of Gela, he arrived by night at the agreed place.
§13.75.7οὐ δυνηθέντων δὲ ἁπάντων ἀκολουθῆσαι τῶν στρατιωτῶν, ὁ μὲν Ἑρμοκράτης μετʼ ὀλίγων προσελθὼν τῷ κατὰ τὴν Ἀχραδινὴν πυλῶνι, καὶ τῶν φίλων τινὰς εὑρὼν προκατειλημμένους τοὺς τόπους, ἀνελάμβανε τοὺς ἀφυστεροῦντας·
Since not all the soldiers were able to follow, Hermocrates with a few approached the gate near Achradina, and having found some of his friends who had pre-occupied the positions, he was receiving those who fell behind.
§13.75.8οἱ δὲ Συρακόσιοι τὸ γεγενημένον ἀκούσαντες σὺν τοῖς ὅπλοις ἦλθον εἰς τὴν ἀγοράν, καθʼ ἣν μετὰ πολλοῦ πλήθους ἐπιφανέντες τόν τε Ἑρμοκράτην καὶ τῶν συμπραττόντων αὐτῷ τοὺς πλείστους ἀπέκτειναν.
But the Syracusans, hearing what had happened, came with their weapons to the marketplace, where, appearing with a great multitude, they killed both Hermocrates and most of those who were cooperating with him.
τοὺς δὲ ἀπὸ τῆς μάχης διασωθέντας μεθιστάντες εἰς κρίσιν φυγῇ κατεδίκαζον·
And those who were saved from the battle they brought to trial and condemned to exile.
§13.75.9διόπερ τινὲς αὐτῶν πολλοῖς περιπεσόντες τραύμασιν ὡς τετελευτηκότες ὑπὸ τῶν συγγενῶν παρεδόθησαν, ὅπως μὴ τῇ τοῦ πλήθους ὀργῇ παραδοθῶσιν, ὧν ἦν καὶ Διονύσιος ὁ μετὰ ταῦτα τῶν Συρακοσίων τυραννήσας.
For this reason, some of them, having received many wounds, were given up by their relatives as dead, so that they might not be delivered to the anger of the multitude, among whom was also Dionysius, who after these things became tyrant of the Syracusans.
