§13.2.1ἐπʼ ἄρχοντος γὰρ Ἀθήνησι Χαβρίου Ῥωμαῖοι μὲν ἀντὶ τῶν ὑπάτων κατέστησαν χιλιάρχους τρεῖς, Λεύκιον Σέργιον, Μάρκον Παπίριον, Μάρκον Σερουίλιον.
For when Chabrias was archon in Athens, the Romans established three military tribunes instead of consuls: Lucius Sergius, Marcus Papirius, and Marcus Servilius.
ἐπὶ δὲ τούτων Ἀθηναῖοι ψηφισάμενοι τὸν πρὸς Συρακοσίους πόλεμον τάς τε ναῦς ἐπεσκεύασαν καὶ χρήματα συναγαγόντες μετὰ πολλῆς σπουδῆς ἅπαντα τὰ πρὸς τὴν στρατείαν παρεσκευάζοντο.
During their term of office, the Athenians, having voted for the war against the Syracusans, repaired their ships, collected money, and with great haste made all preparations for the expedition.
ᾑρημένοι δὲ τρεῖς στρατηγούς, Ἀλκιβιάδην, Νικίαν, Λάμαχον, αὐτοκράτορας αὐτοὺς κατέστησαν ἁπάντων τῶν κατὰ τὸν πόλεμον.
Having chosen three generals, Alcibiades, Nicias, and Lamachus, they appointed them plenipotentiary over everything relating to the war.
§13.2.2τῶν δὲ ἰδιωτῶν οἱ ταῖς οὐσίαις εὐποροῦντες τῇ προθυμίᾳ τοῦ δήμου χαρίζεσθαι βουλόμενοι τινὲς μὲν ἰδίας τριήρεις κατεσκεύασαν, τινὲς δὲ χρήματα δώσειν εἰς τὰς τροφὰς τῆς δυνάμεως ἐπηγγέλλοντο· πολλοὶ δὲ καὶ τῶν δημοτικῶν πολιτῶν καὶ ξένων, ἔτι δὲ συμμάχων, ἑκουσίως προσιόντες τοῖς στρατηγοῖς διεκελεύοντο καταγράφειν ἑαυτοὺς εἰς τοὺς στρατιώτας.
Among the private citizens, those who were wealthy in property, wishing to gratify the enthusiasm of the people, some built triremes at their own expense, while others promised to give money for the maintenance of the forces; and many of the common citizens and foreigners, and also of the allies, coming voluntarily to the generals, urged them to enroll them among the soldiers.
οὕτως ἅπαντες μεμετεωρισμένοι ταῖς ἐλπίσιν ἐξ ἑτοίμου κατακληρουχεῖν ἤλπιζον τὴν Σικελίαν.
Thus, everyone being elated with hopes, they expected to partition Sicily among themselves as a certainty.
§13.2.3ἤδη δὲ τοῦ στόλου παρεσκευασμένου, τοὺς ἑρμᾶς τοὺς κατὰ τὴν πόλιν παμπληθεῖς ὄντας συνέβη ἐν μιᾷ νυκτὶ περικοπῆναι.
When the fleet was already prepared, it happened that in a single night the Hermae throughout the city, which were very numerous, were mutilated.
ὁ μὲν οὖν δῆμος, οὐχ ὑπὸ τῶν τυχόντων νομίσας γεγενῆσθαι τὴν πρᾶξιν, ἀλλʼ ὑπὸ τῶν προεχόντων ταῖς δόξαις ἐπὶ τῇ καταλύσει τῆς δημοκρατίας, ἐμισοπονήρει καὶ τοὺς πράξαντας ἐζήτει μεγάλας δωρεὰς προθεὶς τῷ μηνύσαντι.
The people, therefore, believing that the deed had been done not by ordinary persons, but by those prominent in reputation for the overthrow of the democracy, were filled with indignation against the crime and sought the perpetrators, offering large rewards to anyone who gave information.
§13.2.4προσελθὼν δέ τις τῇ βουλῇ τῶν ἰδιωτῶν ἔφησεν εἰς οἰκίαν μετοίκου τινὰς ἑωρακέναι τῇ νουμηνίᾳ περὶ μέσας νύκτας εἰσιόντας, ἐν οἷς καὶ τὸν Ἀλκιβιάδην.
Now a certain private citizen came forward to the senate and said that on the night of the new moon he had seen some men entering the house of a metic around midnight, among whom was Alcibiades.
ἀνακρινόμενος δʼ ὑπὸ τῆς βουλῆς, πῶς νυκτὸς οὔσης ἐπεγίνωσκε τὰς ὄψεις, ἔφησε πρὸς τὸ τῆς σελήνης φῶς ἑωρακέναι.
When he was questioned by the senate as to how, since it was night, he could recognize their faces, he said he had seen them by the light of the moon.
οὗτος μὲν οὖν αὑτὸν ἐξελέγξας κατεψευσμένος ἠπιστήθη, τῶν δʼ ἄλλων οὐδʼ ἴχνος οὐδεὶς τῆς πράξεως εὑρεῖν ἠδυνήθη.
This man, therefore, having refuted himself and being found to have lied, was disbelieved; and of the others, no one was able to find even a trace of the deed.
§13.2.5τριήρων μὲν ἑκατὸν τεσσαράκοντα ἑτοιμασμένων, ὁλκάδων δὲ καὶ τῶν ἱππαγωγῶν, ἔτι δὲ τῶν τὸν σῖτον καὶ τὴν ἄλλην παρασκευὴν κομιζόντων πολύς τις ἀριθμὸς ἦν· ὁπλῖται δὲ καὶ σφενδονῆται, πρὸς δὲ τούτοις ἱππεῖς καὶ τῶν συμμάχων πλείους τῶν ἑπτακισχιλίων ἐκτὸς τῶν ἐν τοῖς πληρώμασι.
While one hundred and forty triremes were prepared, as well as merchant ships and horse-transports, there was also a great number of ships carrying grain and other equipment; there were also hoplites and slingers, and in addition to these, cavalry and more than seven thousand allies, exclusive of those in the crews.
§13.2.6τότε μὲν οὖν οἱ στρατηγοὶ μετὰ τῆς βουλῆς ἐν ἀπορρήτῳ συνεδρεύοντες ἐβουλεύοντο, πῶς χρὴ διοικῆσαι τὰ κατὰ τὴν Σικελίαν, ἐὰν τῆς νήσου κρατήσωσιν.
At that time, then, the generals, sitting in secret council with the senate, deliberated on how they should administer affairs in Sicily if they should conquer the island.
ἔδοξεν οὖν αὐτοῖς Σελινουντίους μὲν καὶ Συρακοσίους ἀνδραποδίσασθαι, τοῖς δʼ ἄλλοις ἁπλῶς τάξαι φόρους, οὓς κατʼ ἐνιαυτὸν οἴσουσιν Ἀθηναίοις.
It was resolved by them to enslave the Selinuntines and the Syracusans, and to impose on the others simply a tribute which they should pay annually to the Athenians.
