When this year had passed, Alexias was archon in Athens, and in Rome, instead of consuls, three military tribunes were established: Gaius Julius, Publius Cornelius, and Gaius Servilius.
When these had taken over the office, the Athenians, after the execution of the generals, appointed Philokles to the command, and having handed over the fleet to him, they sent him out to Konon, ordering them to lead the forces jointly.
When he arrived at Samos to join Konon, he manned all the ships, which numbered one hundred and seventy-three.
Of these, they decided to leave twenty there, and with all the other ships they put out to sea for the Hellespont, under the leadership of Konon and Philokles.
Lysander, the admiral of the Lacedaemonians, having gathered thirty-five ships from the nearby allies in the Peloponnese, sailed into Ephesus.
Having also summoned the fleet from Chios, he equipped it; and he also went up to Cyrus, the son of King Darius, and received a large sum of money for the maintenance of the soldiers.
And Cyrus, when his father summoned him to Persia, handed over the administration of the cities under his control to Lysander and ordered them to pay the taxes to him.
Lysander, having well supplied himself with everything for the war, returned to Ephesus.
At this very time in Miletus, certain men who desired an oligarchy overthrew the democracy with the cooperation of the Lacedaemonians.
And at first, during the celebration of the Dionysia, they seized those who were most opposed to them in their homes and slaughtered them, being about forty; and afterwards, when the marketplace was full, they selected three hundred of the wealthiest and put them to death.
But the most respectable of those who favored the democracy, being no fewer than a thousand, fearing the situation, fled to the satrap Pharnabazus; and he received them kindly, and having presented each with a gold stater, settled them in Blauda, a fortress in Lydia.
Lysander, having sailed with most of the ships against Iasos in Caria, took it by storm, which was allied with the Athenians, and slaughtered the adult men, who were eight hundred in number, and having sold the children and women as booty, he razed the city.
And after these things, having sailed to Attica and many places, he performed nothing great or worthy of mention; wherefore we have not been eager to record these things; but finally, having taken Lampsacus, he dismissed the Athenian garrison under a truce, and having plundered the possessions, he restored the city to the Lampsacenes.
