One-Year Truce and the Athenian Siege of Scione

Passage 166 of 723 · Greek

Summary

During the archonship of Ameinias in Athens, a one-year truce is made between Athens and Lacedaemon, but they soon resume the war over the dispute of Scione, leading to the Athenian siege.

When Ameinias was archon in Athens, the Romans established Gaius Papirius and Lucius Junius as consuls.
Under these, the Scionaeans, despising the Athenians because of their defeat at Delium, revolted to the Lacedaemonians and delivered their city to Brasidas, who was commanding the Lacedaemonians in the Thracian region.
In Lesbos, after the capture of Mytilene by the Athenians, those who had fled from the capture, being many in number and having long attempted to return to Lesbos, then banded themselves together and seized Antandrus, and starting from there, they continued the war against the Athenians who held Mytilene.
Provoked at these things, the Athenian democracy sent out Aristides and Symmachus as generals with a force against them.
These men, having sailed to Lesbos and made continuous assaults, captured Antandrus; and of the exiles, they put some to death and expelled others from the city, and having left a garrison to guard the place, they sailed away from Lesbos.
After these things, Lamachus the general sailed with ten triremes into the Pontus, and having anchored at Heracleia near the river called Cales, he lost all his ships; for great rains having broken out, and the river having made the downward rush of its current violent, the vessels dashed against some rugged places on the land and were destroyed.
The Athenians made a one-year truce with the Lacedaemonians on these terms, that each side should hold what they were then masters of.
And meeting frequently for conferences, they thought they ought to dissolve the war and put an end once and for all to their rivalry with one another; but the Lacedaemonians were eager to recover the captives taken at Sphacteria.
When the truce had been concluded in the manner described, on other matters everything was agreed between them, but concerning Scione both sides disputed.
A great rivalry having arisen, they dissolved the truce and renewed the war against each other concerning Scione.
At this time, the city of Mende also revolted to the Lacedaemonians and made the rivalry over Scione more intense.
Therefore Brasidas, having conveyed away the children, women, and the most useful of the other property from Mende and Scione, secured the cities with noteworthy garrisons.
The Athenians, provoked by what had happened, decreed to slaughter all the Scionaeans from youth upward when they should be captured, and sent against them a naval force of fifty triremes; of these Nicias and Nicostratus held the command.
These men, having sailed first against Mende, gained possession of the city because some betrayed it; and they walled in Scione, and sitting down to the siege, they made continuous assaults.
The garrison in Scione, being many in number and having an abundance of missiles, food, and other equipment, easily repulsed the Athenians, and having an advantageous position on high ground, they wounded many.
These things, then, were done in the course of this year.

Notes

  1. §12.72.2τὸν ἀριθμὸν — Accusative of respect (or specification), modifying the participle ὄντες to specify the limitation "in number."
  2. §12.72.4βίαιον τὴν καταφορὰν τοῦ ῥεύματος ποιησαμένου — The adjective βίαιον is in the predicative position, serving as a predicate adjective to τὴν καταφορὰν, which is the object of the participle ποιησαμένου in the genitive absolute construction.
  3. §12.72.5ὧν τότε κύριοι καθειστήκεσαν — The relative pronoun ὧν undergoes attraction (assimilation) to the genitive case required by the adjective κύριοι, while its antecedent demonstrative τούτων is omitted (standing for τούτων ἅ).
  4. §12.72.8ἡβηδὸν — An adverb meaning "from youth up" or "all who have reached puberty" (i.e., all adult males), modifying the infinitive ἀποσφάξαι and indicating the severity of the Athenian decree.
