At the same time that these things were being done, a great civil strife and contention arose in Corcyra for the following reasons.
In the war concerning Epidamnus, many of the Corcyraeans who had been taken prisoner and cast into the public prison promised the Corinthians that they would deliver Corcyra over to them if they would release them.
When the Corinthians gladly accepted their proposals, the Corcyraeans, pretending to pay a ransom, were released on bail by their proxenoi for a large number of talents.
And keeping their faith to what had been agreed, as soon as they arrived in their homeland, they seized and slaughtered those who were accustomed to lead the people and especially to stand at the head of the multitude.
Having overthrown the democracy, after a short time, when the Athenians assisted the common people, the Corcyraeans recovered their freedom and set about punishing those who had brought about the rebellion; but these, fearing punishment, fled to the altars of the gods and became suppliants of both the people and the gods.
The Corcyraeans, because of their reverence for the gods, released them from punishment but expelled them from the city.
But these, attempting once more to make a revolution and having fortified a strong position on the island, began to harass the Corcyraeans.
Now these things were done during this year.
