§12.55.1κατὰ δὲ τὴν Ἑλλάδα Λέσβιοι μὲν ἀπέστησαν ἀπὸ τῶν Ἀθηναίων· ἐνεκάλουν γὰρ αὐτοῖς, ὅτι βουλομένων συνοικίζειν πάσας τὰς κατὰ τὴν Λέσβον πόλεις εἰς τὴν Μυτιληναίων πόλιν διεκώλυσαν.
In Greece, the Lesbians revolted from the Athenians; for they accused them, on the ground that when they wished to unite all the cities on Lesbos into the city of Mytilene, the Athenians prevented them.
§12.55.2διὸ καὶ πρὸς Λακεδαιμονίους ἀποστείλαντες πρεσβευτὰς καὶ συμμαχίαν συνθέμενοι συνεβούλευον τοῖς Σπαρτιάταις ἀντέχεσθαι τῆς κατὰ θάλατταν ἡγεμονίας· πρὸς ταύτην δὲ τὴν ἐπιβολὴν ἐπηγγείλαντο πολλὰς τριήρεις εἰς τὸν πόλεμον παρέξεσθαι.
Therefore, having sent envoys to the Lacedaemonians and concluded an alliance, they advised the Spartans to lay claim to the supremacy of the sea, and for this undertaking they promised to provide many triremes for the war.
§12.55.3ἀσμένως δὲ τῶν Λακεδαιμονίων ὑπακουσάντων καὶ περὶ τὴν κατασκευὴν τῶν τριήρων γινομένων, Ἀθηναῖοι φθάσαντες αὐτῶν τὴν παρασκευὴν παραχρῆμα δύναμιν ἐξέπεμψαν εἰς τὴν Λέσβον, πληρώσαντες ναῦς τετταράκοντα καὶ στρατηγὸν προχειρισάμενοι Κλεινιππίδην.
Since the Lacedaemonians gladly listened to them and were busy with the construction of the triremes, the Athenians, anticipating their preparation, immediately dispatched a force to Lesbos, having manned forty ships and appointed Cleinippides as general.
οὗτος δὲ προσλαβόμενος βοήθειαν παρὰ τῶν συμμάχων κατέπλευσεν εἰς Μυτιλήνην.
He, taking additional help from the allies, sailed to Mytilene.
§12.55.4γενομένης δὲ ναυμαχίας οἱ μὲν Μυτιληναῖοι λειφθέντες συνεκλείσθησαν εἰς πολιορκίαν, τῶν δὲ Λακεδαιμονίων ψηφισαμένων βοηθεῖν τοῖς Μυτιληναίοις καὶ παρασκευαζομένων στόλον ἀξιόλογον, ἔφθασαν Ἀθηναῖοι ναῦς ἄλλας σὺν ὁπλίταις χιλίοις ἀποστείλαντες εἰς Λέσβον.
When a naval battle took place, the Mytilenaeans, being defeated, were shut up in a siege; and when the Lacedaemonians voted to aid the Mytilenaeans and were preparing a noteworthy fleet, the Athenians anticipated them by dispatching other ships with a thousand hoplites to Lesbos.
§12.55.5τούτων δʼ ἡγούμενος Πάχης ὁ Ἐπικλήρου καταντήσας εἰς τὴν Μυτιλήνην, καὶ τὴν προϋπάρχουσαν δύναμιν παραλαβών, περιετείχισε τὴν πόλιν καὶ συνεχεῖς προσβολὰς ἐποιεῖτο οὐ μόνον κατὰ γῆν, ἀλλὰ καὶ κατὰ θάλατταν.
Paches the son of Epiclerus, taking command of these, arrived at Mytilene, and having taken over the pre-existing force, built a wall around the city and made continuous assaults not only by land but also by sea.
§12.55.6Λακεδαιμόνιοι δὲ ἐξαπέστειλαν εἰς τὴν Μυτιλήνην τριήρεις μὲν τετταράκοντα πέντε καὶ στρατηγὸν Ἀλκίδαν, εἰς δὲ τὴν Ἀττικὴν εἰσέβαλον μετὰ τῶν συμμάχων· ἐπελθόντες δὲ τοὺς παραλελειμμένους τόπους τῆς Ἀττικῆς καὶ δῃώσαντες τὴν χώραν ἐπανῆλθον εἰς τὴν οἰκείαν.
The Lacedaemonians dispatched forty-five triremes and the general Alcidas to Mytilene, and they invaded Attica with their allies; having overrun the remaining regions of Attica and ravaged the land, they returned home.
§12.55.7Μυτιληναῖοι δὲ τῇ σιτοδείᾳ καὶ τῷ πολέμῳ πιεζόμενοι καὶ στασιάζοντες πρὸς ἀλλήλους, καθʼ ὁμολογίαν παρέδωκαν τὴν πόλιν τοῖς πολιορκοῦσιν.
The Mytilenaeans, being hard pressed by the famine and the war, and falling into strife among themselves, surrendered the city to the besiegers on terms of agreement.
§12.55.8ἐν δὲ ταῖς Ἀθήναις τοῦ δήμου βουλευομένου πῶς χρὴ προσενέγκασθαι τοῖς Μυτιληναίοις, Κλέων ὁ δημαγωγός, ὠμὸς ὢν τὸν τρόπον καὶ βίαιος, παρώξυνε τὸν δῆμον, ἀποφαινόμενος δεῖν τοὺς Μυτιληναίους αὐτοὺς μὲν ἡβηδὸν ἅπαντας ἀποκτεῖναι, τέκνα δὲ καὶ γυναῖκας ἐξανδραποδίσασθαι.
In Athens, while the people were deliberating on how they ought to treat the Mytilenaeans, Cleon the demagogue, who was cruel in character and violent, incited the people, declaring that they ought to put to death all the Mytilenaeans of military age, and to enslave the children and women.
§12.55.9τέλος δὲ πεισθέντων τῶν Ἀθηναίων κατὰ τὴν γνώμην τε τοῦ Κλέωνος ψηφισαμένων, ἀπεστάλησαν εἰς τὴν Μυτιλήνην οἱ τὰ δοχθέντα τῷ δήμῳ δηλώσοντες τῷ στρατηγῷ.
At last, the Athenians having been persuaded and having voted according to the opinion of Cleon, those who were to announce to the general what had been decided by the people were sent to Mytilene.
§12.55.10τοῦ δὲ Πάχητος ἀναγνόντος τὸ ψήφισμα ἦλθεν ἐναντίον τῷ προτέρῳ ἕτερον.
When Paches had read the decree, another decree arrived contrary to the former one.
ὁ δὲ Πάχης γνοὺς τὴν μετάνοιαν τῶν Ἀθηναίων ἐχάρη, καὶ τοὺς Μυτιληναίους συναγαγὼν εἰς ἐκκλησίαν ἀπέλυσε τῶν ἐγκλημάτων, ἅμα δὲ καὶ τῶν μεγίστων φόβων.
And Paches, learning of the change of mind of the Athenians, was glad, and having gathered the Mytilenaeans into an assembly, released them from the accusations and at the same time from their greatest fears.
Ἀθηναῖοι δὲ τῆς Μυτιλήνης τὰ τείχη περιελόντες τὴν Λέσβον ὅλην πλὴν τῆς Μηθυμναίων χώρας κατεκληρούχησαν.
The Athenians, having pulled down the walls of Mytilene, distributed the whole of Lesbos by lot, except for the territory of the Methymnaeans.
ἡ μὲν οὖν Λεσβίων ἀπόστασις ἀπʼ Ἀθηναίων τοιοῦτον ἔσχε τὸ τέλος.
The revolt of the Lesbians from the Athenians thus had such an end.
