At Athens, when Glaucides was archon, the Romans established Titus Quinctius and Agrippa Furius as consuls.
During their term of office, the Syracusans, because of the aforementioned successes, built one hundred triremes and doubled the number of their cavalry; they also took care of their infantry force and made preparations of money, imposing heavier tributes on the subject Sicels.
They did this with the intention of acquiring all Sicily little by little.
While these things were being done, in Greece it happened that the war called the Corinthian War took its beginning from some such causes.
The Epidamnians, who dwelt near the Adriatic and were colonists of the Corcyraeans and Corinthians, fell into civil strife with one another.
When the dominant faction exiled many of their opponents, the exiles gathered together and, taking the Illyrians with them, sailed in common with them against Epidamnus.
When the barbarians campaigned with a large force, occupying the territory and besieging the city, the Epidamnians, not being a match for them on their own, sent ambassadors to Corcyra, requesting the Corcyraeans, as they were kinsmen, to help them.
When they paid no attention, they sent an embassy to the Corinthians for an alliance, and made her alone their mother-city; at the same time they also asked for joint settlers.
The Corinthians, pitying the Epidamnians and hating the Corcyraeans because they alone of the colonists did not send the customary sacrificial victims to the mother-city, decided to help the Epidamnians.
Therefore, they sent out colonists to Epidamnus and enough soldiers to guard the city.
Provoked at these things, the Corcyraeans dispatched fifty triremes and a general over them.
This general, having sailed to the city, ordered them to receive back the exiles; and they sent ambassadors to the Corinthian garrison, demanding that the dispute concerning the colony be decided by a court of law, not by war.
Since the Corinthians paid no attention to them, both sides entered into war, and they prepared notable naval forces and recruited allies.
Thus the war named the Corinthian War arose from the aforementioned causes.
The Romans, carrying on war against the Volscians, at first engaged in skirmishes and small battles, but after this, having won a victory in a great pitched battle, they cut down most of the enemy.
