After these events, Chares was archon in Athens, and in Rome Titus Minucius and Gaius Horatius Polyeidos were established as consuls, and the seventy-seventh Olympiad was celebrated by the Eleans, in which Dandes of Argos won the stadion.
ἐπὶ δὲ τούτων κατὰ μὲν τὴν Σικελίαν Θήρων ὁ Ἀκραγαντίνων δυνάστης ἐτελεύτησεν ἄρξας ἔτη δέκα καὶ ἕξ, τὴν δὲ ἀρχὴν διεδέξατο Θρασυδαῖος ὁ υἱός.
During their term of office, in Sicily, Theron, the ruler of the Akragantines, died after having ruled for sixteen years, and his son Thrasydaeus succeeded to the rule.
§11.53.2ὁ μὲν οὖν Θήρων τὴν ἀρχὴν ἐπιεικῶς διῳκηκώς, καὶ ζῶν μεγάλης ἀποδοχῆς ἐτύγχανε παρὰ τοῖς πολίταις καὶ τελευτήσας ἡρωικῶν ἔτυχε τιμῶν, ὁ δὲ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ ζῶντος ἔτι τοῦ πατρὸς βίαιος ἦν καὶ φονικὸς καὶ τελευτήσαντος ἦρχε τῆς πατρίδος παρανόμως καὶ τυραννικῶς.
Now Theron, having administered his rule with fairness, both while living enjoyed great acceptance among his citizens, and after his death received heroic honors; but his son, even while his father was still living, was violent and murderous, and after his death ruled his homeland lawlessly and tyrannically.
§11.53.3διὸ καὶ ταχέως ἀπιστηθεὶς ὑπὸ τῶν ὑποτεταγμένων διετέλεσεν ἐπιβουλευόμενος καὶ βίον ἔχων μισούμενον· ὅθεν ταχέως τῆς ἰδίας παρανομίας οἰκείαν ἔσχε τὴν τοῦ βίου καταστροφήν.
For this reason, being quickly distrusted by those subjected to him, he continually faced plots and led a hated life; whence he soon met an end of life suited to his own lawlessness.
μετὰ γὰρ τὴν τοῦ πατρὸς Θήρωνος τελευτὴν πολλοὺς μισθοφόρους ἀθροίσας καὶ τῶν Ἀκραγαντίνων καὶ Ἱμεραίων προσκαταλέξας, τοὺς ἅπαντας ἤθροισεν ὑπὲρ τοὺς δισμυρίους ἱππεῖς καὶ πεζούς.
For after the death of his father Theron, having assembled many mercenaries and having enlisted in addition some of the Akragantines and Himeraeans, he gathered in total more than twenty thousand horse and foot.
§11.53.4μετὰ δὲ τούτων μέλλοντος αὐτοῦ πολεμεῖν τοῖς Συρακοσίοις, Ἱέρων ὁ βασιλεὺς παρασκευασάμενος δύναμιν ἀξιόλογον ἐστράτευσεν ἐπὶ τὸν Ἀκράγαντα.
When, with these forces, he was about to make war on the Syracusans, Hieron the king, having prepared a worthy force, marched against Akragas.
γενομένης δὲ μάχης ἰσχυρᾶς πλεῖστοι παραταξαμένων Ἑλλήνων πρὸς Ἕλληνας ἔπεσον.
A fierce battle took place, and a vast number of those Greeks drawn up in battle against Greeks fell.
§11.53.5τῇ μὲν οὖν μάχῃ ἐπροτέρησαν οἱ Συρακόσιοι, κατεκόπησαν δὲ τῶν μὲν Συρακοσίων εἰς δισχιλίους, τῶν δὲ ἄλλων ὑπὲρ τοὺς τετρακισχιλίους.
Now, in the battle, the Syracusans got the upper hand, but there were slain of the Syracusans about two thousand, and of the others more than four thousand.
μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα Θρασυδαῖος μὲν ταπεινωθεὶς ἐξέπεσεν ἐκ τῆς ἀρχῆς, καὶ φυγὼν εἰς Μεγαρεῖς τοὺς Νισαίους καλουμένους, ἐκεῖ θανάτου καταγνωσθεὶς ἐτελεύτησεν·
After these events, Thrasydaeus, having been humbled, was expelled from his rule, and having fled to the Megarians who are called Nisaeans, was there condemned to death and died.
οἱ δʼ Ἀκραγαντῖνοι κομισάμενοι τὴν δημοκρατίαν, διαπρεσβευσάμενοι πρὸς Ἱέρωνα τῆς εἰρήνης ἔτυχον.
Meanwhile, the Akragantines, having recovered their democracy, sent envoys to Hieron and obtained peace.
§11.53.6κατὰ δὲ τὴν Ἰταλίαν Ῥωμαίοις πρὸς Οὐηιεντανοὺς ἐνστάντος πολέμου μεγάλη μάχη συνέστη περὶ τὴν ὀνομαζομένην Κρεμέραν.
In Italy, when war broke out for the Romans against the Veientes, a great battle took place around the so-called Cremera.
τῶν δὲ Ῥωμαίων ἡττηθέντων συνέβη πολλοὺς αὐτῶν πεσεῖν, ὧν φασί τινες τῶν συγγραφέων καὶ τοὺς Φαβίους τοὺς τριακοσίους, συγγενεῖς ἀλλήλων ὄντας καὶ διὰ τοῦτο μιᾷ περιειλημμένους προσηγορίᾳ.
Since the Romans were defeated, it happened that many of them fell, among whom, as some of the historians say, were also the three hundred Fabii, who were relatives of one another and for this reason were encompassed by a single name.
