§13.362καὶ περὶ ταῦτα τὰ μὲν ἐμὰ ἀναγκαῖα σχεδόν τι ἐν τῷ νῦν ταῦτά ἐστιν·
And regarding these matters, my necessary expenses are pretty much these for the present.
ἐὰν δέ τι ἄλλο γίγνηται ἴδιον ἢ δημόσιον ἀνάλωμα διὰ τὴν παρὰ σὲ ἄφιξιν, ὥσπερ τότε ἔλεγον δεῖ ποιεῖν, ἐμὲ μὲν διαμάχεσθαι ὅπως ὡς ὀλίγιστον γένηται τὸ ἀνάλωμα, ὃ δʼ ἂν μὴ δύνωμαι, σὴν εἶναι τὴν δαπάνην.
But if any other expense, private or public, arises because of my journey to you, just as I said at that time we must do, I should fight to make the expense as small as possible, and what I cannot prevent must be your expense.
τὸ δὴ μετὰ ταῦτα λέγω περὶ τῶν σῶν αὖ χρημάτων τῶν Ἀθήνησιν τῆς ἀναλώσεως, ὅτι πρῶτον μὲν ἐάν τι δέῃ ἐμὲ ἀναλίσκειν εἰς χορηγίαν ἤ τι τοιοῦτον, οὐκ ἔστι σοι ξένος οὐδεὶς ὅστις δώσει, ὡς ᾠόμεθα, ἔπειτα καὶ ἄν τι σοὶ αὐτῷ διαφέρῃ μέγα, ὥστε ἀναλωθὲν μὲν ἤδη ὀνῆσαι, μὴ ἀναλωθὲν δὲ ἀλλʼ ἐγχρονισθὲν ἕως ἄν τις παρὰ σοῦ ἔλθῃ, βλάψαι, πρὸς τῷ χαλεπῷ τὸ τοιοῦτόν σοί ἐστιν καὶ αἰσχρόν.
Next, I speak regarding the spending of your own funds in Athens; firstly, that if it is necessary for me to spend anything on a choregia or something of the sort, there is no guest-friend of yours who will pay, as we thought; secondly, if it makes a great difference to you yourself, so that to have spent it now would be beneficial, but not to have spent it but to have it delayed until someone comes from you would do harm, such a situation, in addition to being difficult, is shameful for you.
ἐγὼ γὰρ δὴ ταῦτά γε ἐξήτασα, παρʼ Ἀνδρομήδη τὸν Αἰγινήτην πέμψας Ἔραστον, παρʼ οὗ ἐκέλευες τοῦ ὑμετέρου ξένου, εἴ τι δεοίμην, λαμβάνειν, βουλόμενος καὶ ἄλλα μείζονα ἃ ἐπέστελλες πέμπειν.
For I did indeed investigate these matters, sending Erastus to Andromedes the Aeginetan—your guest-friend from whom you told me to receive money if I needed anything—wishing to send the other larger items which you commissioned me to send.
ὁ δὲ εἶπεν εἰκότα καὶ ἀνθρώπινα, ὅτι καὶ πρότερον ἀναλώσας τῷ πατρί σου μόλις κομίσαιτο, καὶ νῦν σμικρὰ μὲν δοίη ἄν, πλείω δὲ οὔ.
And he said what was reasonable and natural for a human: that having previously made expenditures for your father, he recovered them with difficulty, and now he would give a little, but not more.
οὕτω δὴ παρὰ Λεπτίνου ἔλαβον· καὶ τοῦτό γε ἄξιον ἐπαινέσαι Λεπτίνην, οὐχ ὅτι ἔδωκεν, ἀλλʼ ὅτι προθύμως, καὶ τὰ ἄλλα περὶ σὲ καὶ λέγων καὶ πράττων, ὅτι οἷός τʼ ἦν ἐπιτήδειος, φανερὸς ἦν.
So indeed I received it from Leptines; and in this at least Leptines deserves praise, not because he gave, but because he did so readily, and was clearly a close friend in all other matters concerning you, both in word and deed, to the extent that he was able.
χρὴ γὰρ δὴ καὶ τὰ τοιαῦτα καὶ τἀναντία τούτων ἐμὲ ἀπαγγέλλειν, ὁποῖός τις ἂν ἕκαστος ἐμοὶ φαίνηται περὶ σέ.
For indeed I ought to report both such things and their opposites, depending on what kind of person each one appears to me to be in regard to you.
τὸ δʼ οὖν περὶ τῶν χρημάτων ἐγώ σοι παρρησιάσομαι· δίκαιον γάρ, καὶ ἅμα ἐμπείρως ἔχων τῶν παρὰ σοὶ λέγοιμʼ ἄν.
At any rate, concerning money I shall speak frankly to you; for it is just, and at the same time I can speak from experience of your affairs.
οἱ προσαγγέλλοντες ἑκάστοτέ σοι, ὅτι ἂν οἴωνται ἀνάλωμα εἰσαγγέλλειν, οὐκ ἐθέλουσιν προσαγγέλλειν, ὡς δὴ ἀπεχθησόμενοι· ἔθιζε οὖν αὐτοὺς καὶ ἀνάγκαζε φράζειν καὶ ταῦτα καὶ τὰ ἄλλα· σὲ γὰρ δεῖ εἰδέναι τε τὰ πάντα κατὰ δύναμιν καὶ κριτὴν εἶναι καὶ μὴ φεύγειν τὸ εἰδέναι.
Those who make reports to you from time to time, whenever they think they are reporting an expense, do not wish to report it, as though they would make themselves hated; accustom them, therefore, and compel them to tell both these and other things; for you must know everything as far as possible, and be the judge, and not shrink from knowing.
πάντων γὰρ ἄριστόν σοι ἔσται πρὸς τὴν ἀρχήν· τὰ γὰρ ἀναλώματα ὀρθῶς ἀναλισκόμενα καὶ ὀρθῶς ἀποδιδόμενα πρός τε τἆλλα καὶ πρὸς αὐτὴν τὴν τῶν χρημάτων κτῆσιν καὶ σὺ δὴ φῂς ἀγαθὸν εἶναι καὶ φήσεις.
For this will be the best of all things for your rule; for expenses rightly spent and rightly repaid, both in other respects and for the very acquisition of wealth, even you yourself say and will say is a good thing.
μὴ οὖν σε διαβαλλόντων πρὸς τοὺς ἀνθρώπους οἱ κήδεσθαί σου φάσκοντες· τοῦτο γὰρ οὔτε ἀγαθὸν οὔτε καλὸν πρὸς δόξαν σοι, δοκεῖν δυσσύμβολον εἶναι.
So do not let those who claim to care for you slander you before people; for it is neither good nor honorable for your reputation to seem difficult to deal with in money matters.
τὰ μετὰ ταῦτα περὶ Δίωνος λέγοιμʼ ἄν.
Next, I should speak about Dion.
τὰ μὲν ἄλλʼ οὔπω ἔχω λέγειν, πρὶν ἂν παρὰ σοῦ ἔλθωσιν αἱ ἐπιστολαί, ὥσπερ ἔφης· περὶ μέντοι ἐκείνων ὧν οὐκ εἴας μεμνῆσθαι πρὸς αὐτόν, οὔτε ἐμνήσθην οὔτε διελέχθην, ἐξεπειρώμην δὲ εἴτε χαλεπῶς εἴτε ῥᾳδίως οἴσει γιγνομένων, καί μοι ἐδόκει οὐκ ἠρέμα ἂν ἄχθεσθαι εἰ γίγνοιτο.
As for other matters, I cannot yet speak until letters come from you, as you said; concerning, however, those things which you did not allow me to mention to him, I neither mentioned them nor discussed them, but I tried to test whether he would bear them with difficulty or easily if they happened, and it seemed to me that he would be not slightly annoyed if they should happen.
τὰ δὲ ἄλλα περὶ σὲ καὶ λόγῳ καὶ ἔργῳ μέτριός μοι δοκεῖ εἶναι δίων.
In other respects regarding you, both in word and deed, Dion seems to me to be moderate.
