§4.1Πόθεν πόλεμοι καὶ πόθεν μάχαι ἐν ὑμῖν;
Where do wars and where do fights among you come from?
οὐκ ἐντεῦθεν, ἐκ τῶν ἡδονῶν ὑμῶν τῶν στρατευομένων ἐν τοῖς μέλεσιν ὑμῶν;
Do they not come from here, from your passions that wage war in your members?
§4.2ἐπιθυμεῖτε, καὶ οὐκ ἔχετε· φονεύετε καὶ ζηλοῦτε, καὶ οὐ δύνασθε ἐπιτυχεῖν· μάχεσθε καὶ πολεμεῖτε.
You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and wage war.
οὐκ ἔχετε διὰ τὸ μὴ αἰτεῖσθαι ὑμᾶς·
You do not have because you do not ask.
§4.3αἰτεῖτε καὶ οὐ λαμβάνετε, διότι κακῶς αἰτεῖσθε, ἵνα ἐν ταῖς ἡδοναῖς ὑμῶν δαπανήσητε.
You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend it on your passions.
§4.4μοιχαλίδες, οὐκ οἴδατε ὅτι ἡ φιλία τοῦ κόσμου ἔχθρα τοῦ θεοῦ ἐστίν;
Adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God?
ὃς ἐὰν οὖν βουληθῇ φίλος εἶναι τοῦ κόσμου, ἐχθρὸς τοῦ θεοῦ καθίσταται.
Therefore, whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
§4.5ἢ δοκεῖτε ὅτι κενῶς ἡ γραφὴ λέγει Πρὸς φθόνον ἐπιποθεῖ τὸ πνεῦμα ὃ κατῴκισεν ἐν ἡμῖν;
Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain: "The spirit that he made to dwell in us yearns jealously"?
§4.6μείζονα δὲ
"δίδωσιν χάριν·
But he gives more grace.
"
διὸ λέγει
"Ὁ θεὸς ὑπερηφάνοις ἀντιτάσσεται ταπεινοῖς δὲ δίδωσιν χάριν. " §4.7Ὑποτάγητε οὖν τῷ θεῷ·
Therefore it says: "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." Submit yourselves therefore to God.
ἀντίστητε δὲ τῷ διαβόλῳ, καὶ φεύξεται ἀφʼ ὑμῶν·
Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
§4.8ἐγγίσατε τῷ θεῷ, καὶ ἐγγίσει ὑμῖν.
Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.
καθαρίσατε χεῖρας, ἁμαρτωλοί, καὶ ἁγνίσατε καρδίας, δίψυχοι.
Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
§4.9ταλαιπωρήσατε καὶ πενθήσατε καὶ κλαύσατε·
Lament and mourn and weep.
ὁ γέλως ὑμῶν εἰς πένθος μετατραπήτω καὶ ἡ χαρὰ εἰς κατήφειαν·
Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.
§4.10ταπεινώθητε ἐνώπιον Κυρίου, καὶ ὑψώσει ὑμᾶς.
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
§4.11Μὴ καταλαλεῖτε ἀλλήλων, ἀδελφοί·
Do not speak evil against one another, brothers.
ὁ καταλαλῶν ἀδελφοῦ ἢ κρίνων τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ καταλαλεῖ νόμου καὶ κρίνει νόμον·
The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law.
εἰ δὲ νόμον κρίνεις, οὐκ εἶ ποιητὴς νόμου ἀλλὰ κριτής.
But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge.
§4.12εἷς ἔστιν νομοθέτης καὶ κριτής, ὁ δυνάμενος σῶσαι καὶ ἀπολέσαι·
There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy.
σὺ δὲ τίς εἶ, ὁ κρίνων τὸν πλησίον;
But who are you to judge your neighbor?
§4.13Ἄγε νῦν οἱ λέγοντες Σήμερον ἢ αὔριον πορευσόμεθα εἰς τήνδε τὴν πόλιν καὶ ποιήσομεν ἐκεῖ ἐνιαυτὸν καὶ ἐμπορευσόμεθα καὶ κερδήσομεν· §4.14οἵτινες οὐκ ἐπίστασθε τῆς αὔριον ποία ἡ ζωὴ ὑμῶν·
Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit"— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring.
ἀτμὶς γάρ ἐστε πρὸς ὀλίγον φαινομένη, ἔπειτα καὶ ἀφανιζομένη·
For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.
§4.15ἀντὶ τοῦ λέγειν ὑμᾶς Ἐὰν ὁ κύριος θέλῃ, καὶ ζήσομεν καὶ ποιήσομεν τοῦτο ἢ ἐκεῖνο. §4.16νῦν δὲ καυχᾶσθε ἐν ταῖς ἀλαζονίαις ὑμῶν·
Instead you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that." As it is, you boast in your arrogance.
πᾶσα καύχησις τοιαύτη πονηρά ἐστιν.
All such boasting is evil.
§4.17εἰδότι οὖν καλὸν ποιεῖν καὶ μὴ ποιοῦντι, ἁμαρτία αὐτῷ ἐστίν.
So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.
