New Testament · Hebrews §2.1-2.18

Warning Against Neglect and Salvation Through Christ's Suffering

Passage 2 of 13 · Greek

Summary

The author exhorts faithfulness to the great salvation brought by Christ, explaining the necessity of Christ temporarily becoming lower than the angels and suffering to become the pioneer and high priest of humanity.

Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.
§2.2εἰ γὰρ ὁ διʼ ἀγγέλων λαληθεὶς λόγος ἐγένετο βέβαιος, καὶ πᾶσα παράβασις καὶ παρακοὴ ἔλαβεν ἔνδικον μισθαποδοσίαν, §2.3πῶς ἡμεῖς ἐκφευξόμεθα τηλικαύτης ἀμελήσαντες σωτηρίας, ἥτις, ἀρχὴν λαβοῦσα λαλεῖσθαι διὰ τοῦ κυρίου, ὑπὸ τῶν ἀκουσάντων εἰς ἡμᾶς ἐβεβαιώθη, §2.4συνεπιμαρτυροῦντος τοῦ θεοῦ σημείοις τε καὶ τέρασιν καὶ ποικίλαις δυνάμεσιν καὶ πνεύματος ἁγίου μερισμοῖς κατὰ τὴν αὐτοῦ θέλησιν;
For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just penalty, how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which, having at first been spoken through the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard, while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his own will?
For he did not subject to angels the world to come, concerning which we are speaking.
But someone has testified somewhere, saying, "What is man, that you are mindful of him, or the son of man, that you care for him?
"" You made him for a little while lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and honor, [and appointed him over the works of your hands,] "" you subjected all things under his feet.
"For in "subjecting" "all things" to him, he left nothing that is not subject to him.
But now we do not yet see "all things subjected" to him.
But we see Jesus, who was "made for a little while lower than the angels" because of the suffering of death, "crowned with glory and honor," so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.
For it was fitting for him, for whom are all things and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings.
For both he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are all from one.
For this reason he is not ashamed to call them "brothers," saying, "I will proclaim your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you.
"And again, "I will put my trust in him.
"And again, "Behold, I and the children whom God has given me.
"Since therefore "the children" share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared in the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and free those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.
For surely he does not give help to angels, but he gives help to the descendant of Abraham.
Therefore he had to be made like "his brothers" in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make atonement for the sins of the people.
For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

Notes

  1. §2.1μή ποτε παραρυῶμεν — First-person plural aorist passive subjunctive of παραρρέω. Used with μή to express a negative purpose or fear ('lest we drift away'). It carries an intransitive passive sense, metaphorically referring to drifting off course.
  2. §2.10ἀγαγόντα — Accusative masculine singular aorist active participle. It refers semantically to God (expressed by the dative αὐτῷ as the logical subject of the impersonal ἔπρεπεν), but its case has been attracted to the accusative as the subject of the infinitive τελειῶσαι.
  3. §2.16ἐπιλαμβάνεται — Third-person singular present middle/passive indicative. Here it takes the genitive (of ἀγγέλων and σπέρματος) and is used in the sense of 'to help' or 'to give aid to,' which is a metaphorical extension from the literal meaning 'to take hold of.'
