§11.1Ἔστιν δὲ πίστις ἐλπιζομένων ὑπόστασις, πραγμάτων ἔλεγχος οὐ βλεπομένων·
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
§11.2ἐν ταύτῃ γὰρ ἐμαρτυρήθησαν οἱ πρεσβύτεροι.
For by it the people of old received their commendation.
§11.3Πίστει νοοῦμεν κατηρτίσθαι τοὺς αἰῶνας ῥήματι θεοῦ, εἰς τὸ μὴ ἐκ φαινομένων τὸ βλεπόμενον γεγονέναι.
By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.
§11.4Πίστει πλείονα θυσίαν Ἅβελ παρὰ Καὶν προσήνεγκεν τῷ θεῷ, διʼ ἧς ἐμαρτυρήθη εἶναι δίκαιος, μαρτυροῦντος
"ἐπὶ τοῖς δώροις αὐτοῦ τοῦ θεοῦ,"
καὶ διʼ αὐτῆς ἀποθανὼν ἔτι λαλεῖ.
By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he was commended as righteous, God commending him by accepting his gifts. And through his faith, though he died, he still speaks.
§11.5Πίστει Ἑνὼχ μετετέθη τοῦ μὴ ἰδεῖν θάνατον, καὶ
"οὐχ ηὑρίσκετο διότι μετέθηκεν αὐτὸν ὁ θεός· "
πρὸ γὰρ τῆς μεταθέσεως μεμαρτύρηται
"εὐαρεστηκέναι τῷ θεῷ," §11.6χωρὶς δὲ πίστεως ἀδύνατον
"εὐαρεστῆσαι,"
πιστεῦσαι γὰρ δεῖ τὸν προσερχόμενον [τῷ] θεῷ ὅτι ἔστιν καὶ τοῖς ἐκζητοῦσιν αὐτὸν μισθαποδότης γίνεται.
By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and "he was not found, because God had taken him." For before he was taken he was commended as having "pleased God." And without faith it is impossible to "please" him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
§11.7Πίστει χρηματισθεὶς Νῶε περὶ τῶν μηδέπω βλεπομένων εὐλαβηθεὶς κατεσκεύασεν κιβωτὸν εἰς σωτηρίαν τοῦ οἴκου αὐτοῦ, διʼ ἧς κατέκρινεν τὸν κόσμον, καὶ τῆς κατὰ πίστιν δικαιοσύνης ἐγένετο κληρονόμος.
By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.
§11.8Πίστει καλούμενος Ἀβραὰμ ὑπήκουσεν
"ἐξελθεῖν"
εἰς τόπον ὃν ἤμελλεν λαμβάνειν εἰς κληρονομίαν, καὶ
"ἐξῆλθεν"
μὴ ἐπιστάμενος ποῦ ἔρχεται.
By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to "go out" to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he "went out," not knowing where he was going.
§11.9Πίστει
"παρῴκησεν"
εἰς γῆν τῆς ἐπαγγελίας ὡς ἀλλοτρίαν, ἐν σκηναῖς κατοικήσας μετὰ Ἰσαὰκ καὶ Ἰακὼβ τῶν συνκληρονόμων τῆς ἐπαγγελίας τῆς αὐτῆς·
By faith he "sojourned" in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise.
§11.10ἐξεδέχετο γὰρ τὴν τοὺς θεμελίους ἔχουσαν πόλιν, ἧς τεχνίτης καὶ δημιουργὸς ὁ θεός.
For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.
§11.11Πίστει καὶ αὐτὴ Σάρρα δύναμιν εἰς καταβολὴν σπέρματος ἔλαβεν καὶ παρὰ καιρὸν ἡλικίας, ἐπεὶ πιστὸν ἡγήσατο τὸν ἐπαγγειλάμενον·
By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered him faithful who had promised.
§11.12διὸ καὶ ἀφʼ ἑνὸς ἐγεννήθησαν, καὶ ταῦτα νενεκρωμένου,
"καθὼς τὰ ἄστρα τοῦ οὐρανοῦ"
τῷ πλήθει
"καὶ ὡς ἡ ἄμμος ἡ παρὰ τὸ"
"χεῖλος τῆς θαλάσσης"
ἡ ἀναρίθμητος. §11.13Κατὰ πίστιν ἀπέθανον οὗτοι πάντες, μὴ κομισάμενοι τὰς ἐπαγγελίας, ἀλλὰ πόρρωθεν αὐτὰς ἰδόντες καὶ ἀσπασάμενοι, καὶ ὁμολογήσαντες ὅτι
"ξένοι καὶ παρεπίδημοί"
εἰσιν
"ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς· " §11.14οἱ γὰρ τοιαῦτα λέγοντες ἐμφανίζουσιν ὅτι πατρίδα ἐπιζητοῦσιν.
Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born descendants as many "as the stars of heaven" and "as the innumerable grains of sand by the" "seashore." These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were "strangers and exiles on the earth." For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland.
§11.15καὶ εἰ μὲν ἐκείνης ἐμνημόνευον ἀφʼ ἧς ἐξέβησαν, εἶχον ἂν καιρὸν ἀνακάμψαι·
If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return.
§11.16νῦν δὲ κρείττονος ὀρέγονται, τοῦτʼ ἔστιν ἐπουρανίου.
But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one.
διὸ οὐκ ἐπαισχύνεται αὐτοὺς ὁ θεὸς θεὸς ἐπικαλεῖσθαι αὐτῶν, ἡτοίμασεν γὰρ αὐτοῖς πόλιν.
Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.
§11.17Πίστει
"προσενήνοχεν Ἀβραὰμ τὸν Ἰσαὰκ πειραζόμενος,"
καὶ τὸν μονογενῆ προσέφερεν ὁ τὰς ἐπαγγελίας ἀναδεξάμενος, πρὸς ὃν ἐλαλήθη ὅτι §11.18"Ἐν Ἰξαὰκ κληθήσεταί σοι ξπέρμα," §11.19λογισάμενος ὅτι καὶ ἐκ νεκρῶν ἐγείρειν δυνατὸς ὁ θεός· ὅθεν αὐτὸν καὶ ἐν παραβολῇ ἐκομίσατο.
By faith "Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac," and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son, of whom it was said, "Through Isaac shall your offspring be named." He considered that God was able even to raise people from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back.
§11.20Πίστει καὶ περὶ μελλόντων εὐλόγησεν Ἰσαὰκ τὸν Ἰακὼβ καὶ τὸν Ἠσαῦ.
By faith Isaac invoked future blessings on Jacob and Esau.
§11.21Πίστει Ἰακὼβ ἀποθνήσκων ἕκαστον τῶν υἱῶν Ἰωσὴφ εὐλόγησεν, καὶ
"προσεκύνησεν ἐπὶ τὸ ἄκρον τῆς ῥάβδου αὐτοῦ. " §11.22Πίστει Ἰωσὴφ τελευτῶν περὶ τῆς ἐξόδου τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ ἐμνημόνευσεν, καὶ περὶ τῶν ὀστέων αὐτοῦ ἐνετείλατο.
By faith Jacob, when dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, and "bowed in worship over the head of his staff." By faith Joseph, at the end of his life, made mention of the exodus of the Israelites and gave directions concerning his bones.
§11.23Πίστει Μωυσῆς γεννηθεὶς
"ἐκρύβη τρίμηνον"
ὑπὸ τῶν πατέρων αὐτοῦ, διότι
"εἶδον ἀστεῖον"
τὸ παιδίον καὶ οὐκ ἐφοβή θησαν τὸ διάταγμα τοῦ βασιλέως.
By faith Moses, when he was born, "was hidden for three months" by his parents, because "they saw he was a beautiful" child, and they were not afraid of the king's edict.
§11.24Πίστει
"Μωυσῆς μέγας γενόμενος"
ἠρνήσατο λέγεσθαι υἱὸς θυγατρὸς Φαραώ, §11.25μᾶλλον ἑλόμενος συνκακουχεῖσθαι τῷ λαῷ τοῦ θεοῦ ἢ πρόσκαιρον ἔχειν ἁμαρτίας ἀπόλαυσιν,
By faith "Moses, when he was grown up," refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.
§11.26μείζονα πλοῦτον ἡγησάμενος τῶν Αἰγύπτου θησαυρῶν
"τὸν ὀνειδισμὸν τοῦ χριστοῦ,"
ἀπέβλεπεν γὰρ εἰς τὴν μισθαποδοσίαν.
He considered "the reproach of Christ" greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward.
§11.27Πίστει κατέλιπεν Αἴγυπτον, μὴ φοβηθεὶς τὸν θυμὸν τοῦ βασιλέως, τὸν γὰρ ἀόρατον ὡς ὁρῶν ἐκαρτέρησεν.
By faith he left Egypt, not being afraid of the anger of the king, for he endured as seeing him who is invisible.
§11.28Πίστει πεποίηκεν
"τὸ πάσχα"
καὶ τὴν πρόσχυσιν
"τοῦ αἵματος,"
ἵνα μὴ
"ὁ ὀλοθρεύων"
τὰ πρωτότοκα θίγῃ αὐτῶν.
By faith he kept "the Passover" and sprinkled "the blood," so that "the destroyer" of the firstborn might not touch them.
§11.29Πίστει διέβησαν τὴν Ἐρυθρὰν Θάλασσαν ὡς διὰ ξηρᾶς γῆς, ἧς πεῖραν λαβόντες οἱ Αἰγύπτιοι κατεπόθησαν.
By faith they crossed the Red Sea as on dry land, but the Egyptians, when they attempted to do the same, were drowned.
§11.30Πίστει τὰ τείχη Ἰερειχὼ ἔπεσαν κυκλωθέντα ἐπὶ ἑπτὰ ἡμέρας.
By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days.
§11.31Πίστει Ῥαὰβ ἡ πόρνη οὐ συναπώλετο τοῖς ἀπειθήσασιν, δεξαμένη τοὺς κατασκόπους μετʼ εἰρήνης.
By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she had given a friendly welcome to the spies.
§11.32Καὶ τί ἔτι λέγω;
And what more shall I say?
ἐπιλείψει με γὰρ διηγούμενον ὁ χρόνος περὶ Γεδεών, Βαράκ, Σαμψών, Ἰεφθάε, Δαυείδ τε καὶ Σαμουὴλ καὶ τῶν προφητῶν, §11.33οἳ διὰ πίστεως κατηγωνίσαντο βασιλείας, ἠργάσαντο δικαιοσύνην, ἐπέτυχον ἐπαγγελιῶν, ἔφραξαν στόματα λεόντων, §11.34ἔσβεσαν δύναμιν πυρός, ἔφυγον στόματα μαχαίρης, ἐδυναμώθησαν ἀπὸ ἀσθενείας, ἐγενήθησαν ἰσχυροὶ ἐν πολέμῳ, παρεμβολὰς ἔκλιναν ἀλλοτρίων·
For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets— who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, were made strong out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight.
§11.35ἔλαβον †γυναῖκες† ἐξ ἀναστάσεως τοὺς νεκροὺς αὐτῶν·
Women received their dead by resurrection.
ἄλλοι δὲ ἐτυμπανίσθησαν, οὐ προσδεξάμενοι τὴν ἀπολύτρωσιν, ἵνα κρείττονος ἀναστάσεως τύχωσιν·
Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, so that they might rise again to a better life.
§11.36ἕτεροι δὲ ἐμπαιγμῶν καὶ μαστίγων πεῖραν ἔλαβον, ἔτι δὲ δεσμῶν καὶ φυλακῆς·
Others suffered mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment.
§11.37ἐλιθάσθησαν, ἐπειράσθησαν, ἐπρίσθησαν, ἐν φόνῳ μαχαίρης ἀπέθανον, περιῆλθον ἐν μηλωταῖς, ἐν αἰγίοις δέρμασιν, ὑστερούμενοι, θλιβόμενοι, κακουχούμενοι, §11.38ὧν οὐκ ἦν ἄξιος ὁ κόσμος ἐπὶ ἐρημίαις πλανώμενοι καὶ ὄρεσι καὶ σπηλαίοις καὶ ταῖς ὀπαῖς τῆς γῆς.
They were stoned, they were tempted, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword. They went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, mistreated— of whom the world was not worthy—wandering about in deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.
§11.39Καὶ οὗτοι πάντες μαρτυρηθέντες διὰ τῆς πίστεως οὐκ ἐκομίσαντο τὴν ἐπαγγελίαν, §11.40τοῦ θεοῦ περὶ ἡμῶν κρεῖττόν τι προβλεψαμένου, ἵνα μὴ χωρὶς ἡμῶν τελειωθῶσιν.
And all these, though commended through their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had provided something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect.
