Jesus' Baptism and the Beginning of His Ministry

Passage 1 of 2 · Greek

Summary

This passage describes the ministry of John the Baptist, the baptism of Jesus and His temptation in the wilderness, followed by the beginning of His Galilean ministry and the calling of His first disciples.

§1.1αρχη του ευαγγελι ου ιυ χυ
The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: "Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way; the voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.'" John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
§1.5και εξεπορευετο προς αυτον πασα η ιουδαια χωρα και οι παντες εβαπτιζον το υπ αυτου εν τω ιορδανη ποταμω εξομολογουμενοι τας αμαρτιας αυτων
And all the country of Judea and all [the people] went out to him and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.
§1.6και ην ο ιωαννης ενδεδυμενος τρι χας καμηλου και ζω νην δερματινην περι την οσφυν αυτου και ακριδας και μελι αγριον
Now John was clothed with camel's hair and with a leather belt around his waist, and [he ate] locusts and wild honey.
§1.7και εκηρυσσεν λε γων ερχεται ο ισχυ ροτερος μου οπισω μου ου ουκ κυψας λυσαι τον ιμαντα των υποδηματων αυ του
And he preached, saying, "After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.
§1.8εγω εβαπτισα υμας υδατι αυτος δε βα πτισει εν πνι αγι ω §1.9και εγενετο εν εκει ναις ταις ημεραις ηλθεν ις απο ναζα ρετ της γαλιλαιας και εβαπτισθη εις τον ιορδανην υπο ιωαννου
I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
§1.10και ευθυς αναβενων εκ του υδατος ειδεν σχι ζομενους τους ουνους και το πνα ως περιστεραν κα ταβαινον και με νον επ αυτον
And immediately, coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove and remaining on him.
§1.11και φωνη εκ των ουνων συ ει ο υς μου ο αγαπητος εν σοι ευδοκησα· §1.12και ευθυς το πνα αυ τον εκβαλλει εις την ερημον
And a voice came from heaven, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased." The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness.
§1.13και ην εν τη ερημω μ ημερας πιραζο μενος υπο του σα τανα και ην μετα των θηριων και οι αγγελοι διηκονουν αυτω
And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild animals, and the angels ministered to him.
Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel." Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, [he saw] Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting [nets] in the sea, for they were fishermen.
§1.17και ειπεν αυτοις ο ις δευτε οπισω μου και ποι ησω υμας γενεσ θε αλεεις ανων §1.18και ευθυς αφεντες τα δικτυα ηκολου θησαν αυτω
And Jesus said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men." And immediately they left their nets and followed him.
§1.19και προβας εκειθεν ιδεν ιακωβον τον του ζεβεδεου και ιωαννην τον α δελφον αυτου και αυτους εν τω πλοι ω καταρτιζοντας τα δικτυα
And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets.
§1.20και ευθυς εκαλεσεν αυτους και αφεντες τον πρα αυτων ζεβεδε ον εν τω πλοιω μετα των μισθω των απηλθον ο πισω αυτου
And immediately he called them, and leaving their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, they followed him.
§1.21και εισπορευον ται εις καφαρναουμ και ευθυς τοις σαβ βασιν εις την συναγω γην
And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath [he entered] into the synagogue [and began to teach].
§1.22και εξεπλησ σοντο επι τη διδα χη αυτου ην γαρ δι δασκων αυτους ως εξουσιαν εχων και ουχ ως οι γραμ ματεις·
And they were astonished at his teaching, for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.

Notes

  1. 1.1ἀρχὴ τοῦ εὐαγγελίου — The nominative `ἀρχή` stands without a main verb as a title-like nominal phrase. The genitive `τοῦ εὐαγγελίου Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ` can be interpreted either as an objective genitive (the gospel about Jesus Christ) or a subjective genitive (the gospel brought by Jesus Christ), keeping both possibilities open.
  2. 1.6καὶ ἀκρίδας καὶ μέλι ἄγριον — In this codex (such as Codex Sinaiticus), the participle `ἔσθων` (eating) is missing, leaving `καὶ ἀκρίδας καὶ μέλι ἄγριον` grammatically linked to `ἦν ἐνδεδυμένος` (was clothed). Since clothing oneself with locusts and wild honey is unnatural, a verb meaning 'eating' or 'subsisting on' must be understood as omitted.
  3. 1.16καὶ παράγων... σίμωνα... ἀμφιβάλλοντας — The verb `εἶδεν` (he saw), which is found in standard editions, is absent in this text. The participle `παράγων` (passing alongside) leads the sentence, with `σίμωνα` and `ἀνδρέαν` as accusatives accompanied by the participle `ἀμφιβάλλοντας` (casting). Contextually, a main verb of perception (such as 'saw') must be supplied to complete the syntax.
  4. 1.21καὶ εὐθὺς τοῖς σάββασιν εἰς τὴν συναγωγήν — Verbs like `εἰσελθὼν ἐδίδασκεν` (entering, he taught) are omitted in this text. Only temporal and directional phrases ('immediately on the Sabbath into the synagogue') are provided. The verbal action 'entered and began to teach' is strongly implied by the immediate context of the next verse, which mentions 'his teaching' (`τῇ διδαχῇ`) and that 'he was teaching' (`ἦν διδάσκων`).
