τῶν ἐγκλημάτων, καὶ κήρυγμα περὶ τούτων ἐποιήσατο·
VIII (IX) [... ] of the accusations, and made a proclamation concerning them.
οἱ δʼ ἀντὶ τοῦ ἀποδόντες ἃ ἔλαβον ἀπηλλάχθαι τιμωρίας καθʼ αὑτῶν καὶ ζητήσεις ἔγραφον.
But they, instead of returning what they received and being released from punishment, wrote decrees for inquiry against themselves.
τοὺς δὴ τὸ μὲν ἐξ ἀρχῆς ἀδικήσαντας καὶ δωροδοκήσαντας, ἀδείας δʼ αὐτοῖς δοθείσης μὴ ἀποδόντας τὸ χρυσίον τί χρὴ ποιεῖν;
What indeed must one do with those who committed injustice and took bribes from the very beginning, and who, when impunity was granted to them, did not return the gold?
ἐᾶν ἀτιμωρήτους;
Leave them unpunished?
ἀλλʼ αἰσχρόν, ὦ ἄνδρες δικασταί, ἰδίων ἕνεκα ἐγκλημάτων πόλεως σωτηρίαν κινδυνεύειν· οὐ γὰρ ἔστιν ὑμᾶς τούτων ἀποψηφίσασθαι, μὴ ἐθέλοντας ἀναδέξασθαι καὶ τὰ ἀδικήματα μὴ τοίνυν, ὦ ἄνδρες δικαςταί, προτιμᾶτε τὴν τούτων πλεονεξίαν τῆς ὑμετέρας αὐτῶν σωτηρίας·
But it is disgraceful, gentlemen of the jury, that for the sake of private accusations the safety of the city should be endangered; for it is not possible for you to acquit these men, unless you are willing to take upon yourselves their offenses as well.
μηδὲ λημμάτων αἰσχρῶν ἕνεκα τὸν πόλεμον, ἀλλὰ πραγμάτων ἀξιωτέρων καὶ μεταλλαγῆς ἀμείνονος ποιήσησθε
Do not therefore, gentlemen of the jury, prefer their greed to your own safety; nor for the sake of shameful gains make war, but for worthier matters and a better change.

εσαλε ὑπὲρ αὐτῶν ε οις τὴν εἰρήνην ἐποιησάμεθα βουλευω ων χρη εν χε αὐτῷ παρʼ ἑκάστου ἡμῶν γίγνεσθαι, καὶ τὸ μὲν κατηγορεῖν ἐν τῷ δικαστηρίῳ καὶ ἐξελέγχειν τοὺς εἰληφότας τὰ χρήματα καὶ δεδωροδοκηκότας κατὰ τῆς πατρίδος ἡμῖν προςέταξεν τοῖς ᾑρημένοις κατηγόροις· τὸ δʼ ἀποφῆναι τοὺς εἰληφότας ἀπέδωκεν τῇ βουλῇ τῇ ἐξ Ἀρείου πάγου, ἣ τούτους εἰς τὸν δῆμον ἀπέδειξεν· τὸ δὲ κολάσαι τοὺς ἀδικοῦντας ὑμῖν ἐξ Ἀρείου πάγου.
IX (X) [... ] on behalf of them [... ] we made peace [... ] should accrue to him from each of us, and to accuse in court and convict those who received the money and took bribes against their country, the people commanded us, the elected accusers; but to declare those who received it, they assigned to the Council of the Areopagus, which pointed these men out to the people; and to punish the wrongdoers, [they assigned] to you.
ἐὰν δὲ ἡ ψῆφος μὴ ἀκόλουθος γένηται τοῖς νόμοις καὶ τοῖς δικαίοις, τοῦτο δή, ὦ ἄνδρες δικασταί, παρʼ ὑμῖν ἔσται καταλελειμμένον.
If your vote does not follow the laws and justice, this indeed, gentlemen of the jury, will have been left as a charge upon you.
διόπερ δεῖ πάντας ὑμᾶς τὴν σωτηρίαν τῆς πόλεως καὶ τὴν ἄλλην [τὴν] εὐδαιμονίαν τὴν ὑπάρχουσαν ὑμῖν ἐν τῇ χώρᾳ καὶ κοινῇ πᾶσι καὶ ἰδίᾳ ἑνὶ ἑκάστῳ, καὶ εἰς τοὺς τάφους τοὺς τῶν προγόνων, τιμωρήσασθαι τοὺς ἀδικοῦντας ὑπὲρ ἁπάσης τῆς πόλεως, καὶ μήτε λόγου παράκλησιν τοὺς εἰληφότας δῶρα κατὰ τῆς πατρίδος καὶ τῶν νόμων·
Therefore, it is necessary for all of you, looking to the safety of the city and the other prosperity belonging to you in this land, both in common to all and privately to each individual, and to the tombs of your ancestors, to punish the wrongdoers on behalf of the whole city, and not [to heed] the verbal entreaties of those who have taken bribes against their country and the laws.
μηδὲ τοῖς δακρύοις τοῖς Ἁγνωνίδου προσέχετε τὸν νοῦν, ἐκεῖνο λογιζόμενοι, ὅτι ἀτυχήσαντι μὲν οὗτος δʼ ἂν κλαίων οὐ δίκαια ποιήςειεν, ὥσπερ καὶ οἱ λῃσταὶ οἱ ἐπὶ τοῦ τροχοῦ κλαίοντες, ἐξὸν αὐτοῖς μὴ ἐμβαίνειν εἰς τὸ πλοῖον.
Nor pay attention to the tears of Hagnonides, reflecting on this: that even if he met with misfortune, he would not be acting justly in weeping, just as pirates weeping upon the wheel, when it was open to them not to board the ship in the first place.
οὕτω καὶ Δημοσθένης τί προςῆκον κλαιήσει, ἐξὸν αὐτῷ μὴ λαμβάνειν
In the same way, why indeed should Demosthenes weep, when it was open to him not to receive the money?
