When these matters were examined in the court, they did not seem to have been proposed correctly, but the jury voted against you.
εἶτʼ εἰ μὲν ἀπέφυγες τὴν γραφήν, οὐκ ἂν κατεψεύσατο οὗτος τοῦ θεοῦ, ἐπειδὴ δὲ συνέβη σοι ἁλῶναι, Εὐξένιππον δεῖ ἀπολωλέναι;
Then, if you had been acquitted of the prosecution, would this man not have lied about the god? But since it happened that you were convicted, must Euxenippus be destroyed?
καὶ σοὶ μὲν τῷ τοιοῦτο ψήφισμα γράψαντι πέντε καὶ εἴκοσι δραχμῶν ἐτιμήθη, τὸν δὲ κατακλιθέντα εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν τοῦ δήμου κελεύσαντος μηδʼ ἐν τῇ Ἀττικῇ δεῖ τεθάφθαι;
And while you, who proposed such a decree, were fined twenty-five drachmas, must he, who slept in the temple at the order of the people, not even be buried in Attica?
"Yes, for he did terrible things regarding the bowl, by permitting Olympias to dedicate it to the statue of Hygieia." For you suppose this, bringing her name as a tool for yourself into the trial and accusing Euxenippus of false flattery, that you will collect hatred and anger against him from the jury.
But one ought, my good sir, not to seek to do some harm to any of the citizens on the strength of the name of Olympias and that of Alexander, but rather, when they write letters to the people of Athens that are neither just nor proper, then one should stand up, speak against them on behalf of the city, argue for justice against those who have come from them, and travel to the common council of the Greeks to assist one's fatherland.
But you never stood up there, nor did you make any speech about them, whereas here you hate Olympias in order to destroy Euxenippus, and you say that he is a flatterer of her and of the Macedonians.
If you can show that he has ever gone to Macedonia, or has received any of them into his own house, or has associated or met with anyone from there, or has spoken any words whatsoever, either in a workshop or in the marketplace or anywhere else, about these affairs, and has not conducted his own affairs in an orderly and moderate manner just like any other citizen, let the jury deal with him in whatever way they wish.
For if these accusations of yours were true, not only you would know them, but also all the other people in the city; just as concerning the others who either say or do anything on their behalf, not only they themselves, but also the other Athenians and even school children know those of the orators who receive wages from them, and those of the other citizens who entertain those who come from there, receive them, and go out to meet them on the roads when they approach; and you will nowhere see Euxenippus numbered among any of these.
But you bring none of them to trial nor place them in danger, whom everyone knows to be doing these things, while against Euxenippus you accuse him of flattery, whose life does not admit such a charge.
And yet, if you had sense, you would neither have accused Euxenippus concerning the dedicated bowl, nor would you have made any other argument here; for it is not fitting.
διὰ τί;
Why?
Listen, men of the jury, to the argument I am about to make.
Olympias has made unjust complaints to you concerning the affairs at Dodona, as I have already twice refuted in the assembly, in front of you and the other Athenians, against those who came from her, showing that she was bringing complaints against the city that were not fitting.
For Dodonaean Zeus ordered you in the oracle to adorn the statue of Dione; and you, having made a face as beautiful as possible and all the other accompanying parts, and having prepared much and costly adornment for the goddess, and having sent a sacred embassy and a sacrifice of great expense, adorned the seated image of Dione in a manner worthy both of yourselves and of the goddess.
For these things, complaints came to you from Olympias in her letters, on the ground that the Molossian land, in which the temple is, belonged to her; therefore, it was not fitting for us to touch any of the things there.
