εἰπόντος δέ μου πρὸς αὐτὴν τά τε πραχθέντα, καὶ ὅτι μοι Ἀθηνογένης χαλεπὸς εἴη καὶ οὐδὲν ἐθέλοι τῶν μετρίων συγχωρεῖν, τοῦτον μὲν ἔφη ἀεὶ τοιοῦτον εἶναι, ἐμὲ δʼ ἐκέλευε θαρρεῖν· αὐτὴ γάρ μοι πάντα συναγωνιεῖσθαι.
When I told her what had happened, and that Athenogenes was being difficult with me and refused to make any reasonable concession, she said that he was always like that, and urged me to be of good courage, for she herself would fight alongside me in everything.
§2καὶ ταῦτʼ ἔλεγεν σπουδάζουσά τε τῷ ἤθει ὡς ἔνι μάλιστα καὶ ὀμνύουσα τοὺς μεγίστους ὅρκους, ἦ μὴν μετʼ εὐνοίας τῆς ἐμῆς λέγειν καὶ ἐπὶ πάσης ἀληθείας· ὥστʼ ἐμέ, ὦ ἄνδρες δικασταί, ῥηθήσεται γὰρ πρὸς ὑμᾶς τἀληθές, ταῦτα πεπεῖσθαι.
And she said this with the most serious air possible and swearing the greatest oaths, that she was indeed speaking with goodwill towards me and in all truth; so that I, gentlemen of the jury—for the truth shall be told to you—was persuaded of this.
οὕτως, ὡς ἔοικεν, ἐξίστησιν ἀνθρώπου φύσιν ἔρως, προσλαβὼν γυναικὸς συνεργίαν.
Thus, it seems, love drives a man out of his senses, once it enlists a woman's cooperation.
ἐκείνη γοῦν φενακίζουσα ἅπαντα ταῦτα προσπεριέκοψεν αὑτῇ ὡς δὴ εἰς παιδίσκην τριακοσίας δραχμὰς εὐνοίας ἕνεκα.
She at any rate, playing a trick in all of this, extorted for herself an extra three hundred drachmae, ostensibly as a gift of goodwill for her maidservant.
§3ἴσως μὲν οὖν, ὦ ἄνδρες δικαςταί, οὐδὲν ὑπερθαύμαστόν με ὑπὸ Ἀντιγόνας τὸν τρόπον τουτονὶ παιδαγωγηθῆναι, γυναικὸς ἣ δεινοτάτη μὲν τῶν ἑταιρῶν, ὥς φασιν, ἐφʼ ἡλικίας ἐγένετο, διατετέλεκε δὲ πορνοβοσκοῦσα εν οἶκον τοῦ Χολλίδου οὐδενὸς ἐλάττω ὄντα ἀνῄρηκεν.
Perhaps, then, gentlemen of the jury, it is not at all surprising that I was led by the nose in this manner by Antigona, a woman who, they say, was the most formidable of courtesans in her prime, and who has continued as a brothel-keeper and ruined the house of a citizen of Chollidae, which was second to none in size.
καίτοι ὅπου καθʼ ἑαυτὴν οὖσα τοιαῦτα διεπράττετο, τί οἴεςθʼ αὐτὴν νῦν ἐννοεῖν, προςλαβοῦσαν συναγωνιστὴν Ἀθηνογένην, ἄνθρωπον λογογράφον τε καὶ ἀγοραῖον, τὸ δὲ μέγιστον, Αἰγύπτιον;
Yet when she by herself accomplished such things, what do you think she is planning now, having taken as her partner Athenogenes, a man who is both a speechwriter and a marketplace swindler, and above all, an Egyptian?
§4τέλος δʼ οὖν, ἵνα μὴ μακρολογῶ, μεταπεμψαμένη γάρ με πάλιν ὕστερον εἶπεν ὅτι πολλοὺς λόγους ἀναλώσασα πρὸς τὸν Ἀθηνογένην μόλις εἴη συμπεπεικυῖα αὐτὸν ἀπολῦσαί μοι τόν τε Μίδαν καὶ τοὺς υἱεῖς ἀμφοτέρους τετταράκοντα μνῶν, καὶ ἐκέλευέ με τὴν ταχίστην πορίζειν τὸ ἀργύριον, πρὶν μεταδόξαι τι Ἀθηνογένει.
At last, to make a long story short, for she sent for me again later, she told me that after spending many words on Athenogenes, she had with difficulty persuaded him to release to me Midas and both his sons for forty minae, and she urged me to provide the money as quickly as possible before Athenogenes should change his mind.
§5συναγαγὼν δʼ ἐγὼ πανταχόθεν καὶ τοὺς φίλους ἐνοχλήσας καὶ θεὶς ἐπὶ τὴν τράπεζαν τὰς τετταράκοντα μνᾶς ἧκον ὡς τὴν Ἀντιγόναν.
Having gathered the money from all quarters, troubling my friends, and having laid down the forty minae on the bank table, I came to Antigona.
κἀκείνη ςυνήγαγεν ἡμᾶς εἰς τὸ αὐτό, ἐμέ τε καὶ Ἀθηνογένην, καὶ διήλλαξε, καὶ παρεκελεύσατο τοῦ λοιποῦ εὖ ποιεῖν ἀλλήλους.
She brought us together in the same place, myself and Athenogenes, reconciled us, and exhorted us to be on good terms with each other for the future.
καὶ ἔγωγʼ ἔφην ταῦτα ποιήσειν, καὶ Ἀθηνογένης οὑτοσὶ ὑπολαβὼν εἶπεν ὅτι τῶν πεπραγμένων δεῖ με χάριν ἔχειν Ἀντιγόνᾳ· καὶ νῦν, ἔφη, ταύτης ἕνεκα ἤδη σοι ἐνδείξομαι ὅσα σε ἀγαθὰ ποιήσω.
I said I would do so, and Athenogenes here took up the word and said that I ought to be grateful to Antigona for what had been done; 'and now,' he said, 'for her sake, I will show you at once how much good I will do you.
σὺ μὲν γάρ, ἔφη, τὸ ἀργύριον ἐπʼ ἐλευθερίᾳ καταβαλεῖς τοῦ Μίδου καὶ τῶν παίδων, ἐγὼ δέ σοι ἀποδώσομαι αὐτοὺς ὠνῇ καὶ πράσει, ἵνα πρῶτον μὲν μηδεὶς παρενοχλῇ μηδὲ διαφθείρῃ τὸν παῖδα, ἔπειτʼ αὐτοὶ μὴ ἐγχειρῶσι πονηρεύεσθαι μηδὲν διὰ τὸν φόβον. §6τὸ δὲ μέγιστον, νῦν μὲν ἂν δόξειαν διʼ ἐμὲ γεγονέναι ἐλεύθεροι· ἐὰν δὲ πριάμενος σὺ ὠνῇ καὶ πράσει εἶθʼ ὕστερον, ὅτε ἄν σοι δοκῇ, ἀφῇς αὐτοὺς ἐλευθέρους, διπλασίαν ἕξουσίν σοι τὴν χάριν.
For you,' he said, 'will pay down the money for the freedom of Midas and his children, but I will sell them to you by purchase and sale, so that, first, no one may trouble or corrupt the boy, and secondly, they themselves may not attempt to do any mischief out of fear.' 'And above all, as things are, they might seem to have become free through me; but if you buy them by purchase and sale, and then later, whenever you think fit, set them free, they will feel a double gratitude to you.
ὅσον μέντοι ὀφείλουσιν ἀργύριον, μύρου τέ τινος τιμὴν Παγκάλῳ καὶ Προκλεῖ καὶ εἴ τι ἄλλο κατέθετό τις ἐπὶ τὸ μυροπώλιον τῶν προσφοιτώντων, οἷα γίγνεται, ταῦτα, ἔφη, σὺ ἀναδέξῃ·
However, as for any money they owe, such as some price of perfume to Pancalus and Procles, and whatever else any of the frequenters of the perfume shop has deposited there, as is usually the case, you,' he said, 'will take these over.
ἔστιν δὲ μικρὰ κομιδῇ καὶ πολλῷ πλείω φορτία ἐστὶν τούτων ἐν τῷ ἐργαστηρίῳ, μύρον καὶ ἀλάβαστροι καὶ σμύρνα, καὶ ἄλλʼ ἄττα ὀνόματα λέγων, ὅθεν πάντα ταῦτα διαλυθήσεται ῥᾳδίως.
But they are altogether small, and there are goods in the workshop of far greater value than these, perfume, and alabaster jars, and myrrh,' and he mentioned some other names, 'from which all these debts will easily be discharged.'
