§7ὥστε ἡδέως κἂν τῶν ἀντιδικούντων ἡμῖν τοῦ σεμνοτάτου πυθοίμην, εἰ ἄλλοθέν ποθεν ἔχοι ἂν ἐπιδεῖξαι αὑτὸν Ἀθηναῖον ἢ ἐκ τούτων ὧν καὶ ἡμεῖς Εὐφίλητον ἐπιδείκνυμεν.
Therefore, I would gladly ask even the most solemn of our opponents, whether he could prove himself to be an Athenian from any other source than from those very things by which we also prove Euphiletus to be one.
ἐγὼ μὲν γὰρ οὐκ οἶμαι ἄλλο τι ἂν αὐτὸν 〈εἰπεῖν〉 ἢ ὅτι ἡ μήτηρ ἀστή τέ ἐστι καὶ 〈γαμετὴ καὶ ἀστὸς〉 ὁ πατήρ, καὶ ὡς ταῦτʼ ἀληθῆ λέγει, παρέχοιτʼ ἂν αὐτῷ τοὺς συγγενεῖς μάρτυρας.
For I do not think he would say anything else than that his mother is a citizen and a wedded wife, and his father is a citizen, and to show that he speaks the truth in this, he would provide his relatives as witnesses.
§8εἶτα, ὦ ἄνδρες δικασταί, εἰ μὲν οὗτοι ἐκινδύνευον, ἠξίουν ἂν τοῖς αὑτῶν οἰκείοις ὑμᾶς πιστεύειν μαρτυροῦσι μᾶλλον ἢ τοῖς κατηγόροις· νυνὶ δὲ ἡμῶν πάντα ταῦτα παρεχομένων ἀξιώσουσιν ὑμᾶς τοῖς αὑτῶν πείθεσθαι λόγοις μᾶλλον ἢ τῷ πατρὶ τῷ Εὐφιλήτου καὶ ἐμοὶ καὶ τῷ ἀδελφῷ καὶ τοῖς φράτορσι καὶ πάσῃ τῇ ἡμετέρα συγγενείᾳ;
Then, gentlemen of the jury, if these men themselves were in danger, they would expect you to believe their own relatives testifying rather than their accusers; but now, when we are providing all these things, will they expect you to believe their own words rather than Euphiletus' father, myself, his brother, the clansmen, and all our relatives?
καὶ μὴν οὗτοι μὲν οὐδʼ ἐν ἑνὶ κινδυνεύοντες ἰδίας ἔχθρας ἕνεκα ποιοῦσιν, ἡμεῖς δὲ πάντας ὑποδίκους ἡμᾶς αὐτοὺς καθιστάντες μαρτυροῦμεν.
Furthermore, they are doing this because of private enmity without being in danger of anything, whereas we are testifying while making ourselves liable to prosecution in every way.
§9καὶ πρὸς ταῖς μαρτυρίαις, ὦ ἄνδρες δικασταί, πρῶτον μὲν ἡ τοῦ Εὐφιλήτου μήτηρ, ἣν οὗτοι ὁμολογοῦσιν ἀστὴν εἶναι, ὅρκον ὀμόσαι ἐπὶ τοῦ διαιτητοῦ ἐβούλετο ἐπὶ Δελφινίῳ ἦ μὴν τουτονὶ Εὐφίλητον εἶναι ἐξ αὑτῆς καὶ τοῦ ἡμετέρου πατρός.
And in addition to the testimonies, gentlemen of the jury, first of all, Euphiletus' mother, whom these men themselves admit to be a citizen, was willing to take an oath before the arbitrator at the Delphinium that this Euphiletus here is indeed from herself and our father.
καίτοι τίνα προσῆκε μᾶλλον αὐτῆς ἐκείνης τοῦτο εἰδέναι;
And yet, whom did it befit to know this better than her?
ἔπειτα, ὦ ἄνδρες δικασταί, ὁ πατὴρ ὁ ἡμέτερος, ὃν εἰκός ἐστι μετὰ τὴν τούτου μητέρα ἄριστα τὸν αὑτοῦ ὑὸν γιγνώσκειν, οὗτος καὶ τότε καὶ νυνὶ βούλεται ὀμόσαι ἦ μὴν Εὐφίλητον τουτονὶ ὑὸν εἶναι αὑτοῦ ἐξ ἀστῆς καὶ γαμετῆς γυναικός.
Secondly, gentlemen of the jury, our father, who is likely to know his own son best after his mother, was willing both then and now to swear that this Euphiletus here is indeed his son from a citizen and wedded wife.
§10πρὸς τούτοις τοίνυν, ὦ ἄνδρες δικασταί, ἐγὼ ἐτύγχανον μὲν τρισκαιδεκαέτης ὤν, ὥσπερ καὶ πρότερον εἶπον, ὅτε οὗτος ἐγένετο, ἕτοιμος δʼ εἰμὶ ὀμόσαι ἦ μὴν Εὐφίλητον τουτονὶ ἀδελφὸν εἶναι ἐμαυτοῦ ὁμοπάτριον.
In addition to this, gentlemen of the jury, I happened to be thirteen years old, as I said before, when he was born, and I am ready to swear that this Euphiletus here is indeed my brother by the same father.
ὥστε, ὦ ἄνδρες δικασταί, δικαίως ἂν καὶ τοὺς ἡμετέρους ὅρκους πιστοτέρους νομίζοιτε ἢ τοὺς τούτων λόγους· ἡμεῖς μὲν γὰρ ἀκριβῶς εἰδότες ὀμόσαι περὶ αὐτοῦ θέλομεν, οὗτοι δὲ ταῦτα ἀκηκοότες παρὰ τῶν τούτου διαφόρων ἢ αὐτοὶ πλάττοντες λέγουσι.
Therefore, gentlemen of the jury, you would justly consider our oaths to be more trustworthy than their words; for we want to swear concerning him knowing the truth accurately, whereas they speak having heard these things from his enemies or inventing them themselves.
§11πρὸς δὲ τούτοις, ὦ ἄνδρες δικασταί, ἡμεῖς μὲν τοὺς συγγενεῖς μάρτυρας καὶ ἐπὶ τῶν διαιτητῶν καὶ ἐφʼ ὑμῶν παρεχόμεθα, οἷς οὐκ ἄξιον ἀπιστεῖν· οὗτοι δέ, ἐπειδὴ ἔλαχεν ὁ Εὐφίλητος τὴν δίκην τὴν προτέραν τῷ κοινῷ τῶν δημοτῶν καὶ τῷ τότε δημαρχοῦντι, ὃς νῦν τετελεύτηκε, δύο ἔτη τοῦ διαιτητοῦ τὴν δίαιταν ἔχοντος οὐκ ἐδυνήθησαν οὐδεμίαν μαρτυρίαν εὑρεῖν ὡς οὑτοσὶ ἄλλου τινὸς πατρός ἐστιν ἢ τοῦ ἡμετέρου.
In addition to this, gentlemen of the jury, we provide our relatives as witnesses both before the arbitrators and before you, whom it is not proper to disbelieve; whereas these men, when Euphiletus brought the former suit against the community of the demesmen and the then demarch, who is now deceased, though the arbitrator held the arbitration for two years, were unable to find any testimony to show that this man is the son of any other father than ours.
τοῖς δὲ διαιτῶσι μέγιστα 〈ταῦτα〉 σημεῖα ἦν τοῦ ψεύδεσθαι τούτους, καὶ κατεδιῄτησαν αὐτῶν ἀμφότεροι.
To the arbitrators, these were the greatest proofs that they were lying, and both of them decided the arbitration against them.
καί μοι λαβὲ τῆς προτέρας διαίτης τὴν μαρτυρίαν.

§12Μαρτυρία
ὡς μὲν τοίνυν καὶ τότε ὦφλον τὴν δίαιταν, ἀκηκόατε.
[Testimony] That they then also lost the arbitration, you have heard.
ἀξιῶ δέ, ὦ ἄνδρες δικασταί, ὥσπερ οὗτοι μέγα τοῦτʼ ἂν ἔφησαν εἶναι σημεῖον ὡς οὐκ ἔστιν Ἡγησίππου, εἰ οἱ διαιτηταὶ αὐτῶν ἀπεδιῄτησαν, οὕτω τὸ νῦν ἡμῖν τοὐναντίον εἶναι μαρτύριον, ὅτι ἀληθῆ λέγομεν, ἐπεὶ ἔδοξαν αὐτοῖς ἀδικεῖν τοῦτον Ἀθηναῖον ὄντα καὶ κυρίως πρῶτον ἐγγραφέντα ὕστερον ἐξαλείψαντες.
And I demand, gentlemen of the jury, that just as these men would have said it was a great proof that he is not the son of Hegesippus, if the arbitrators had decided in their favor, so now the contrary should be a proof for us that we speak the truth, since they seemed to them to injure this man, who is an Athenian and was at first legally registered and later erased.
ὅτι μὲν οὖν ἀδελφὸς ἡμῶν ἐστιν οὑτοσὶ Εὐφίλητος καὶ πολίτης ὑμέτερος, καὶ ἀδίκως ὑβρίσθη ὑπὸ τῶν ἐν τῷ δήμῳ συστάντων, ἱκανῶς οἴομαι ὑμᾶς, ὦ ἄνδρες δικασταί, ἀκηκοέναι.
That, therefore, this Euphiletus here is our brother and your fellow citizen, and was unjustly outraged by those who conspired in the deme, I think, gentlemen of the jury, you have heard sufficiently.
