§8οὐ μόνον τοίνυν, ὦ ἄνδρες δικασταί, τὰ κατὰ τὴν τριηραρχίαν ἀνήλισκον τότε οὕτω πολυτελῆ ὄντα, ἀλλὰ καὶ τῶν χρημάτων ὧν εἰς τὸν ἔκπλουν ἐψηφίσασθε εἰσενεχθῆναι μέρος οὐκ ἐλάχιστον ἐγὼ ὑμῖν προεισήνεγκα.
And not only, men of the jury, did I spend at that time on the things relating to the trierarchy, which were so expensive, but I also advanced on your behalf no smallest part of the money which you decreed should be contributed for the sailing out.
δόξαν γὰρ ὑμῖν ὑπὲρ τῶν δημοτῶν τοὺς βουλευτὰς ἀπενεγκεῖν τοὺς προεισοίσοντας τῶν τε δημοτῶν καὶ τῶν ἐγκεκτημένων, προσαπηνέχθη μου τοὔνομα ἐν τριττοῖς δήμοις διὰ τὸ φανερὰν εἶναί μου τὴν οὐσίαν.
For when it was resolved by you that the councilors should return, on behalf of the demesmen, the names of those among the demesmen and the property-owners who should make the advance payments, my name was additionally returned in three demes because my property was conspicuous.
§9καὶ τούτων ἐγώ, οὐδεμίαν πρόφασιν ποιησάμενος, ὅτι τριηραρχῶ καὶ οὐκ ἂν δυναίμην δύο λῃτουργίας λῃτουργεῖν οὐδὲ οἱ νόμοι ἐῶσιν, ἔθηκα τὰς προεισφορὰς πρῶτος.
And of these taxes, without making any excuse that I was serving as trierarch and could not perform two liturgies, nor did the laws allow it, I was the first to pay the advances.
καὶ οὐκ εἰσεπραξάμην διὰ τὸ τότε μὲν ἀποδημεῖν ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν τριηραρχῶν, ὕστερον δὲ καταπλεύσας καταλαβεῖν τὰ μὲν εὔπορα ὑφʼ ἑτέρων προεξειλεγμένα, τὰ δʼ ἄπορα ὑπόλοιπα.
And I did not recover them, because at that time I was abroad serving as trierarch on your behalf, and when I later sailed back, I found that the solvent cases had already been collected by others, while the insolvent ones were left behind.
§10καὶ ταῦτα ὅτι ἀληθῆ λέγω πρὸς ὑμᾶς, τούτων ὑμῖν ἀναγνώσεται τὰς μαρτυρίας τῶν τε τὰ στρατιωτικὰ τότε εἰσπραττόντων καὶ τῶν ἀποστολέων, καὶ τοὺς μισθοὺς οὓς ταῖς ὑπηρεσίαις καὶ τοῖς ἐπιβάταις κατὰ μῆνα ἐδίδουν, παρὰ τῶν στρατηγῶν σιτηρέσιον μόνον λαμβάνων, πλὴν δυοῖν μηνοῖν μόνον μισθὸν ἐν πέντε μησὶν καὶ ἐνιαυτῷ, καὶ τοὺς ναύτας τοὺς μισθωθέντας, ὅσον ἕκαστος ἔλαβεν ἀργύριον, ἵνʼ ἐκ τούτων εἰδῆτε τὴν ἐμὴν προθυμίαν, καὶ οὗτος διʼ ὅ τι παραλαβεῖν παρʼ ἐμοῦ τὴν ναῦν οὐκ ἤθελεν, ἐπειδή μοι ὁ χρόνος ἐξῆλθεν τῆς τριηραρχίας.
And to show that I am telling the truth to you about these matters, the clerk shall read to you the testimonies of those who were then collecting the military taxes and of the dispatch-commissioners, and of the pay which I gave month by month to the service crew and the marines, receiving from the generals only money for provisions, except only two months' pay in five months and a year, and of the hired sailors, how much money each received, so that from these things you may know my zeal, and why this man was not willing to take over the ship from me when my time for the trierarchy expired.

§11ὅτι μὲν τοίνυν οὐ ψεύδομαι πρὸς ὑμᾶς περὶ ὧν εἶπον, ὦ ἄνδρες δικασταί, τῶν μαρτυριῶν ἀναγιγνωσκομένων ἀκηκόατε.
That I am not lying to you about what I have said, men of the jury, you have heard from the reading of the testimonies.
ἔτι δὲ περὶ ὧν μέλλω λέγειν, ἅπαντές μοι ὁμολογήσετε ὅτι ἀληθῆ ἐστιν.
Furthermore, concerning what I am about to say, you will all agree with me that it is true.
τριήρους γὰρ ὁμολογεῖται κατάλυσις εἶναι, πρῶτον μέν, ἐὰν μὴ μισθόν τις διδῷ, δεύτερον δέ, ἐὰν εἰς τὸν Πειραιᾶ μεταξὺ καταπλεύσῃ· ἀπόλειψίς τε γὰρ πλείστη γίγνεται, οἵ τε παραμένοντες τῶν ναυτῶν οὐκ ἐθέλουσιν πάλιν ἐμβαίνειν, ἐὰν μή τις αὐτοῖς ἕτερον ἀργύριον διδῷ ὥστε τὰ οἰκεῖα διοικήσασθαι.
For it is agreed that the disbanding of a trireme occurs, first, if someone does not pay the wage, and second, if it sails back to the Piraeus in the meantime; for then the greatest desertion takes place, and those of the sailors who remain do not wish to embark again unless someone gives them more money so that they can manage their household affairs.
ἃ ἐμοὶ ἀμφότερα συνέβη, ὦ ἄνδρες δικασταί, ὥστε πολυτελεστέραν μοι γενέσθαι τὴν τριηραρχίαν.
Both of these things happened to me, men of the jury, so that my trierarchy became much more expensive for me.
§12καὶ γὰρ μισθὸν οὐδένα λαβὼν παρὰ τοῦ στρατηγοῦ ὀκτὼ μηνῶν, κατέπλευσα τοὺς πρέσβεις ἄγων διὰ τὸ ἄριστά μοι πλεῖν τὴν ναῦν, καὶ ἐνθένδε πάλιν, προσταχθέν μοι ὑπὸ τοῦ δήμου Μένωνα τὸν στρατηγὸν ἄγειν εἰς Ἑλλήσποντον ἀντὶ Αὐτοκλέους ἀποχειροτονηθέντος, ᾠχόμην ἀναγόμενος διὰ τάχους.
For indeed, having received no pay from the general for eight months, I sailed back bringing the envoys because my ship sailed best, and from here again, it being commanded to me by the people to take the general Menon to the Hellespont in place of Autocles who had been deposed, I went away, putting to sea with speed.
καὶ ἀντὶ τῶν ἀπολιπόντων μὲν ναυτῶν ἑτέρους ἐμισθωσάμην ναύτας, δωρεὰς καὶ προδόσεις αὐτοῖς διδοὺς μεγάλας, τοῖς δὲ παραμείνασι τῶν ἀρχαίων ναυτῶν ἔδωκά τι εἰς διοίκησιν τῶν οἰκείων καταλιπεῖν πρὸς ᾧ πρότερον εἶχον, οὐκ ἀγνοῶν τὴν παροῦσαν χρείαν, §13ὡς ἀναγκαία ἦν ἑκάστῳ, ἀπορῶν δὲ αὐτὸς ὡς μὰ τὸν Δία καὶ τὸν Ἀπόλλω οὐδεὶς ἄν μοι πιστεύσειεν, ὅστις μὴ ἀληθῶς παρηκολούθηκε τοῖς ἐμοῖς πράγμασιν.
And in place of the sailors who had deserted, I hired other sailors, giving them large bounties and advances, and to those of the old sailors who remained, I gave something to leave behind for the management of their household affairs in addition to what they had before, not being ignorant of their present need, how necessary it was for each of them, although I myself was so short of funds that—by Zeus and Apollo!—no one would believe me who has not truly followed my affairs.
ὑποθεὶς δὲ τὸ χωρίον Θρασυλόχῳ καὶ Ἀρχένεῳ, καὶ δανεισάμενος τριάκοντα μνᾶς παρʼ αὐτῶν καὶ διαδοὺς τοῖς ναύταις, ᾠχόμην ἀναγόμενος, ἵνα μηδὲν ἐλλείποι τῷ δήμῳ ὧν προσέταξε τὸ κατʼ ἐμέ.
But mortgaging my land to Thrasylochus and Archeneos, and borrowing thirty minae from them and distributing it to the sailors, I went away, putting to sea, so that nothing of what the people commanded should be lacking as far as I was concerned.
καὶ ὁ δῆμος ἀκούσας ταῦτα ἐπῄνεσέν τέ με, καὶ ἐπὶ δεῖπνον εἰς τὸ πρυτανεῖον ἐκάλεσεν.
And the people, hearing these things, both praised me and invited me to dinner in the Prytaneum.
καὶ ὡς ταῦτʼ ἀληθῆ λέγω, τούτων ὑμῖν ἀναγνώσεται τὴν μαρτυρίαν καὶ τὸ ψήφισμα τὸ τοῦ δήμου.
And to show that I am telling the truth about these things, the clerk shall read to you the testimony and the decree of the people.

§14ἐπειδὴ τοίνυν εἰς Ἑλλήσποντον ἤλθομεν, καὶ ὅ τε χρόνος ἐξεληλύθει μοι τῆς τριηραρχίας, καὶ μισθὸς οὐκ ἀπεδόθη τοῖς στρατιώταις ἀλλʼ ἢ δυοῖν μηνοῖν, ἕτερός τε στρατηγὸς ἧκεν Τιμόμαχος, καὶ οὗτος διαδόχους οὐκ ἄγων ἐπὶ τὰς ναῦς, ἀθυμήσαντές μοι πολλοὶ τοῦ πληρώματος ᾤχοντο ἀπολιπόντες τὴν ναῦν, οἱ μὲν εἰς τὴν ἤπειρον στρατευσόμενοι, οἱ δὲ εἰς τὰς Θασίων καὶ Μαρωνιτῶν ναῦς, μισθῷ μεγάλῳ πεισθέντες καὶ ἀργύριον πολὺ προλαβόντες καὶ ὑπὸ πολλῶν αὖ τῷ λόγῳ ἐξηπατημένοι.
Therefore, when we arrived at the Hellespont, and my time for the trierarchy had expired, and no pay had been given to the soldiers except only for two months, and another general, Timomachus, had come, and he was not bringing successors for the ships, many of my crew, becoming disheartened, deserted the ship and went away—some to serve on the mainland, and others to the ships of the Thasians and Maronites, being persuaded by high wages, receiving large advances, and being furthermore deceived by many promises.
