§26καὶ ἐδεῖτο αὐτοῦ συστήσας Φιλώνδαν, ἄνδρα τὸ μὲν γένος Μεγαρέα, μετοικοῦντα δʼ Ἀθήνησιν, πιστῶς δὲ τούτῳ διακείμενον καὶ ὑπηρετοῦντα ἐν ἐκείνῳ τῷ χρόνῳ, ἐπειδὰν ἀφίκηται ἐκ Μακεδονίας ὁ Φιλώνδας, ὃν συνίστη οὗτος τῷ πατρὶ τῷ ἐμῷ, ἄγων ξύλα τὰ δοθέντα τούτῳ ὑπὸ Ἀμύντου, τὸ ναῦλον τῶν ξύλων παρασχεῖν καὶ ἐᾶσαι ἀνακομίσαι τὰ ξύλα εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν τὴν ἑαυτοῦ τὴν ἐν Πειραιεῖ· αὑτοῦ γὰρ εἶναι τὰ ξύλα.
And he requested him, having introduced Philondas, a man Megarian by birth but residing as a metic in Athens, who was faithfully disposed and serving him at that time, that when Philondas—whom this man had introduced to my father—should arrive from Macedonia bringing the timber given to this man by Amyntas, my father should provide the freight-money for the timber and allow him to convey the timber to his own house in Peiraeus; for he said the timber was his own.
§27ἅμα τε τῇ δεήσει εἶπε λόγον, ᾧ οὐκ ἀκόλουθα ποιεῖ τὰ ἔργα νυνί· ἔφη γάρ, κἂν μὴ τύχῃ ὧν ἐδεῖτο τοῦ πατρός, οὐκ ὀργισθήσεσθαι ὥσπερ ἂν ἄλλος τις ἀποτυχών, ἀλλʼ ὧν αὑτῷ δεηθέντι ὑπηρέτηκεν, τούτων, ἄν ποτε δύνηται, χάριν ἀποδώσειν.
And along with the request, he spoke a word which his deeds now do not follow; for he said that even if he should not obtain what he requested of my father, he would not be angry as any other person would who was disappointed, but that for whatever services my father had rendered to him when he made a request, he would, if he were ever able, return the favor.
ἀκούσας δὲ ὁ πατὴρ ὁ ἐμὸς ταῦτα ἥσθη τε τοῖς λόγοις, καὶ ἐπῄνει τοῦτον ὅτι μέμνηται εὖ παθών, καὶ ὅσα αὐτοῦ ἐδεῖτο ὑπέσχετο ποιήσειν.
When my father heard this, he was pleased with these words and praised him because he remembered benefits received, and promised to do everything that he requested of him.
§28καὶ οὗτος μὲν μετὰ ταῦτα τὴν ἀναγωγὴν ἐποιεῖτο ὡς τοὺς στρατηγοὺς τοὺς βασιλέως, ὁ δὲ Φιλώνδας, ᾧ συνέστησεν τὸν πατέρα τὸν ἐμόν, ἐπειδὰν ἀφίκηται ἄγων τὰ ξύλα, τὸ ναῦλον παρασχεῖν, εἰς τὴν Μακεδονίαν τὴν πορείαν ἐποιεῖτο.
And while this man after this made his departure to the King's generals, Philondas, to whom he had introduced my father so that when he arrived bringing the timber my father might provide the freight-money, made his journey to Macedonia.
καὶ οὗτοι οἱ χρόνοι ἦσαν περὶ θαργηλιῶνα μῆνα ἐπʼ Ἀστείου ἄρχοντος.
And these times were about the month of Thargelion in the archonship of Asteius.
§29τῷ δʼ ὑστέρῳ ἔτει ἀφικομένου τοῦ Φιλώνδου ἐκ τῆς Μακεδονίας ἄγοντος τὰ ξύλα, ἀποδημοῦντος τούτου παρὰ βασιλεῖ, καὶ προσελθόντος τῷ πατρὶ τῷ ἐμῷ καὶ κελεύοντος τὸ ναῦλον τῶν ξύλων παρασχεῖν, ἵνα διαλύσῃ τὸν ναύκληρον, καθάπερ οὗτος ἐδεήθη ὅτε ἐξέπλει τοῦ πατρὸς καὶ συνέστησε τὸν Φιλώνδαν, προσαγαγὼν πρὸς τὴν τράπεζαν ὁ πατὴρ ἐκέλευσε δοῦναι Φορμίωνα τὸ ναῦλον τῶν ξύλων, χιλίας ἑπτακοσίας πεντήκοντα.
But in the following year, when Philondas arrived from Macedonia bringing the timber, while this man was abroad with the King, and having come to my father and requested him to provide the freight-money for the timber, so that he might pay off the shipowner, just as this man had requested of my father when he sailed out and introduced Philondas, my father, leading him to the bank, ordered Phormio to pay the freight-money for the timber, one thousand seven hundred and fifty drachmas.
§30καὶ ἠρίθμησε τὸ ἀργύριον Φορμίων· καὶ ἐγράψατο μὲν ὀφείλοντα Τιμόθεον (οὗτος γὰρ ἦν ὁ δεηθεὶς τοῦ πατρὸς παρασχεῖν τὸ ναῦλον τῶν ξύλων, καὶ τούτου ἦν), ὑπόμνημα δʼ ἐγράψατο τήν τε χρείαν εἰς ἣν ἐλήφθη τὸ ἀργύριον καὶ τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ λαβόντος.
And Phormio counted out the money; and on the one hand he entered Timotheus as debtor (for he was the one who had requested my father to provide the freight-money for the timber, and it belonged to him), and on the other hand he entered a memorandum of the purpose for which the money was taken and the name of the person who received it.
καὶ οὗτος ὁ χρόνος ἦν Ἀλκισθένους ἄρχοντος, ὁ ὕστερος ἐνιαυτὸς ἢ οὗτος ἀνήγετο ὡς βασιλέα.
And this time was in the archonship of Alcisthenes, the year after this man departed to the King.
§31ὑπὸ δὲ τὸν αὐτὸν χρόνον τοῦτον καὶ Τιμοσθένης ὁ Αἰγιλιεὺς ἀφικνεῖται κατʼ ἐμπορίαν ἰδίαν ἀποδημῶν.
And about this same time, Timosthenes of Aegilia also arrived, being abroad on his own private trade.
ἐπιτήδειος δὲ ὢν Φορμίωνι καὶ κοινωνὸς ὁ Τιμοσθένης, ὅτʼ ἐξέπλει, δίδωσιν ἀποθεῖναι τῷ Φορμίωνι μετʼ ἄλλων χρημάτων καὶ φιάλας λυκιουργεῖς δύο.
Timosthenes, being an intimate friend and partner of Phormio, when he sailed out, gave to Phormio to keep, along with other money, two Lycian-crafted bowls.
ἀπὸ τύχης δὲ ὁ παῖς ταύτας τὰς φιάλας, οὐκ εἰδὼς ὅτι ἀλλότριαι ἦσαν, δίδωσι τῷ Αἰσχρίωνι τῷ ἀκολούθῳ τῷ τούτου, ὅτʼ ἐπέμφθη ὡς τὸν πατέρα τὸν ἐμὸν ὑπὸ τούτου, καὶ ᾐτεῖτο τὰ στρώματα καὶ τὰ ἱμάτια καὶ τὰς φιάλας, καὶ τὴν μνᾶν τοῦ ἀργυρίου ἐδανείσατο, ἀφικομένων ὡς τοῦτον Ἀλκέτου καὶ Ἰάσονος.
But by chance, the slave, not knowing that they belonged to another, gave these bowls to Aeschrion, this man's attendant, when he was sent to my father by this man and asked for the bedding and the cloaks and the bowls, and borrowed the mina of silver, when Alcetas and Jason arrived at his house.
§32ἀπαιτοῦντος δὲ τοῦ Τιμοσθένους τὰς φιάλας τὸν Φορμίωνα, ἐπειδὴ ἧκεν, ἀποδημοῦντος Τιμοθέου παρὰ βασιλεῖ, πείθει αὐτὸν ὁ πατὴρ ὁ ἐμὸς τιμὴν ἀπολαβεῖν τῶν φιαλῶν, ὅσον ἦγον αἱ φιάλαι, διακοσίας τριάκοντα ἑπτά.
And when Timosthenes demanded the bowls back from Phormio when he returned, while Timotheus was abroad with the King, my father persuaded him to accept the value of the bowls, as much as the bowls were worth, two hundred and thirty-seven drachmas.
καὶ τῷ μὲν Τιμοσθένει τιμὴν ἀπέδωκεν τῶν φιαλῶν, τοῦτον δὲ ἐγράψατο αὑτῷ ὀφείλοντα, πρὸς τὸ ἄλλο χρέως ὃ οὗτος αὐτῷ ὤφειλεν, ὃ ἀπέτεισεν τῷ Τιμοσθένει τῶν φιαλῶν.
And to Timosthenes indeed he paid the value of the bowls, and this man he entered as debtor to himself, in addition to the other debt which this man owed him, for the amount which he paid to Timosthenes for the bowls.
§33καὶ ταῦτα πάντα ὅτι ἀληθῆ λέγω, τούτων ὑμῖν ἀναγνώσεται τὰς μαρτυρίας, πρῶτον μὲν τῶν δόντων τὸ ἀργύριον οἷς οὗτος ἐκέλευσεν ἀπὸ τῆς τραπέζης καὶ ἐπικαθημένων τότε, ἔπειτα τοῦ ἀπολαβόντος τὴν τιμὴν τῶν φιαλῶν.
And that I speak the truth in all these things, he shall read to you the depositions of these: first, of those who paid the money from the bank at this man's order and who were then sitting at the counter, and next, of the one who received the value of the bowls.

ὅτι μὲν τοίνυν οὐ ψεύδομαι πρὸς ὑμᾶς περὶ ὧν εἶπον, τῶν μαρτυριῶν ἀναγιγνωσκομένων ἀκηκόατε.
DEPOSITIONS. That therefore I do not lie to you concerning what I have said, you have heard from the reading of the depositions.
ὅτι δέ μοι καὶ αὐτὸς οὗτος ὡμολόγει τὰ ξύλα τὰ κομισθέντα ὑπὸ Φιλώνδου εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ἀνακομισθῆναι τὴν ἐν Πειραιεῖ, τούτων ὑμῖν ἀναγνώσεται τὴν μαρτυρίαν.
But that even this man himself admitted to me that the timber brought by Philondas was conveyed to his own house in Peiraeus, of these things he shall read to you the deposition.
