§24ταῦτα μὲν τοίνυν Σπουδίας οὐδὲν ἧττον ἐμοῦ γιγνώσκων, ἀλλʼ οἶμαι μὲν καὶ ἀκριβέστερον, ὅσῳ καὶ πυκνότερον ἐνταυθοῖ παρέρχεται, πᾶσιν ἐναντία τοῖς πεπραγμένοις αὑτῷ λέγων οὐκ αἰσχύνεται.
Spudias, therefore, knowing these things no less than I do, but indeed, I think, even more accurately, inasmuch as he comes here more frequently, is not ashamed to speak in complete contradiction to what has been done by himself.
καίτοι πολλάκις ὑμεῖς ἓν μόνον σκευώρημα συνιδόντες, τούτῳ κατὰ τῶν ἄλλων τῶν ἐγκαλουμένων ἐχρήσασθε τεκμηρίῳ· τούτῳ δʼ ἅπανθʼ ὑφʼ αὑτοῦ συμβέβηκεν ἐξελέγχεσθαι.
And yet, you have often, upon detecting only a single trick, used this as proof against the other charges; but for this man, it has happened that everything is refuted by himself.
καί μοι λαβὲ τὴν μαρτυρίαν ὡς ὡμολογεῖτο τότε τὰ σημεῖα τῶν γραμμάτων ὑπὸ τῆς τούτου γυναικός, καὶ νῦν ὑπὸ Σπουδίου κατασημανθέντα κεῖται. ΜΑΡΤΥΡΙΑ.
And take, please, the testimony showing how the seals of the writings were acknowledged at that time by his wife, and are now kept sealed by Spudias.
§25τούτων τοίνυν οὕτως σαφῶς ἀποδεδειγμένων, ἡγοῦμαι μὲν οὐδὲν ἔτι δεῖν πλείω λέγειν· ὁπότε γὰρ καὶ νόμους ἔχω παρέχεσθαι καὶ μάρτυρας ἁπάντων τῶν εἰρημένων, καὶ τὸν ἀντίδικον αὐτὸν ὁμολογοῦντά μοι, τί δεῖ μακρῶν ἔτι λόγων;
These things having been so clearly proved, I think there is no longer any need to say more; for when I have both laws to present and witnesses for everything that has been said, and the opponent himself agreeing with me, what need is there of further long speeches?
ὅμως δʼ ἂν ἄρα περὶ τῆς προικὸς ἀγανακτῇ καὶ φάσκῃ πλεονεκτεῖσθαι ταῖς χιλίαις δραχμαῖς, ψεύσεται· οὐδὲν γὰρ ἔχων ἔλαττον ἀμφισβητεῖ πρὸς αὐτάς, ἀλλὰ πλέον, ὡς αὐτίχʼ ὑμῖν ἔσται φανερόν.
Yet, if after all he should be angry about the dowry and claim that he is disadvantaged by the thousand drachmas, he will lie; for he disputes against them, having no less, but more, as will immediately be clear to you.
§26οὐ μὴν ἀλλʼ εἰ πάντα ταῦθʼ ὡς ἀληθῶς συνέβη, οὐ δήπου δίκαιον ἐμὲ τὴν ὁμολογηθεῖσαν προῖκα μὴ λαβεῖν, εἴπερ ὄφελός τι τῶν νόμων ἐστίν, οὐδέ γε τὸν Πολύευκτον, εἰ τῶν θυγατέρων ἐβούλετο τῇ μὲν ἐλάττω, τῇ δὲ πλείω προῖκʼ ἐπιδοῦναι, διακωλυθῆναι νῦν· σοὶ γὰρ αὐτῷ μὴ λαμβάνειν ἐξῆν, ὦ Σπουδία, μὴ προστιθεμένων ὥσπερ ἐμοὶ τῶν χιλιῶν.
And yet, if all these things actually happened, it is surely not just that I should not receive the agreed-upon dowry, if indeed there is any utility in the laws, nor indeed that Polyeuctus, if he wished to give to one of his daughters a smaller dowry and to the other a larger one, should be prevented now; for it was open to you yourself not to accept, Spudias, if the thousand drachmas were not added as they were for me.
ἀλλʼ οὐδὲν ἔλαττον εἶχες, ὡς ἐγὼ διδάξω.
But you had no less, as I will explain.
πρῶτον δʼ ἐφʼ οἷς ἐξέδοτο τούτῳ, λαβέ μοι τὴν μαρτυρίαν. ΜΑΡΤΥΡΙΑ.
But first, take for me the testimony concerning the terms on which she was given in marriage to him.
§27πῶς οὖν οὐδὲν ἔλαττον ἔχει, φήσει τις, εἰ τούτῳ μὲν ἐν ταῖς τετταράκοντα μναῖς ἐνετιμᾶτο τὰ χρυσία καὶ τὰ ἱμάτια τῶν χιλιῶν, ἐμοὶ δʼ αἱ δέκα μναῖ χωρὶς προσαπεδίδοντο;
How then, someone will say, does he have no less, if for him the gold ornaments and clothing were valued as part of the forty minae at one thousand drachmas, whereas to me the ten minae were paid additionally besides?
τοῦτο δὴ καὶ μέλλω λέγειν.
This is indeed what I am about to explain.
ὁ μὲν γὰρ Σπουδίας, ὦ ἄνδρες δικασταί, παρὰ τοῦ Λεωκράτους ἔχουσαν τὰ χρυσία καὶ τὰ ἱμάτια τὴν γυναῖκʼ ἔλαβεν, ὧν ὁ Πολύευκτος προσαπέτεισεν τῷ Λεωκράτει πλεῖν ἢ χιλίας· ἐγὼ δʼ, ἅπερ ἔπεμψέ μοι χωρὶς τῆς προικός, ὅσʼ ἔχω μόνον, πρὸς τὰ τούτῳ δοθέντʼ ἐὰν ἀντιθῇ τις, εὑρήσει παραπλήσια, χωρὶς τῶν εἰς τὰς χιλίας ἀποτιμηθέντων.
For Spudias, men of the jury, received his wife possessing the gold ornaments and clothing from Leocrates, for which Polyeuctus paid back to Leocrates more than a thousand drachmas; whereas as for me, if one compares what he sent me apart from the dowry, which are all that I have, with what was given to this man, he will find them to be nearly equal, apart from the things valued at the thousand drachmas.
§28ὥστʼ εἰκότως ἐν ταῖς τετταράκοντα μναῖς ἐνετιμᾶτο ταῦτα, ἅπερ ἀπετετείκει τῷ Λεωκράτει καὶ πλείω τῶν ἐμοὶ δοθέντων ἦν.
So it was with good reason that these things were valued as part of the forty minae, which he had paid back to Leocrates and which were worth more than what was given to me.
καί μοι λαβὲ πρῶτον μὲν τὴν ἀπογραφὴν ταύτην καὶ λέγʼ αὐτοῖς ἅπερ ἑκάτερος ἡμῶν ἔχει, μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα τὴν τῶν διαιτητῶν μαρτυρίαν, ἵνʼ ἴδωσιν ὅτι καὶ πολλῷ πλείω χρήματʼ ἔχει, καὶ περὶ τούτων ὁ Λεωκράτης ἐνεκάλει, καὶ κατὰ ταῦτʼ ἔγνωσαν οἱ διαιτηταί.
And take for me first this inventory, and read to them what each of us has, and after that, the testimony of the arbitrators, so that they may see both that he has much more property, and that Leocrates laid claim concerning these things, and according to this the arbitrators made their decision.

§29ἆρʼ οὖν οὐ φανερῶς οὗτος μὲν ἔχει τετταράκοντα μνᾶς πάλαι τὴν προῖκα, ἐγὼ δὲ τὰς μὲν τριάκοντα καθάπερ οὗτος, τὰς δὲ χιλίας οὐ μόνον ὕστερον οὐκ ἐκομισάμην, ἀλλὰ καὶ νυνὶ κινδυνεύω περὶ αὐτῶν ὡς ἀδίκως ἔχων;
Is it not then manifest that this man has long since had the forty minae of his dowry, while I, though having the thirty like him, not only failed to recover the thousand drachmas later, but am even now in danger concerning them as if I held them unjustly?
διὰ ταῦτα μέντοι Σπουδίας, ὦ ἄνδρες δικασταί, τοῖς φίλοις οὐκ ἐβούλετʼ ἐπιτρέψας ἀπαλλαγῆναι τῶν πρὸς ἔμʼ ἐγκλημάτων, ὅτι συνέβαινεν αὐτῷ πάντα ταῦτʼ ἐξελέγχεσθαι· πᾶσιν γὰρ τούτοις παραγεγενημένοι καὶ σαφῶς εἰδότες οὐκ ἐπέτρεπον αὐτῷ λέγειν ὅ τι τύχοι· παρʼ ὑμῖν δʼ οἴεται ψευδόμενος ἐμοῦ τἀληθῆ λέγοντος περιγενήσεσθαι.
It was for this reason, men of the jury, that Spudias did not wish to refer the matter to friends and be rid of his complaints against me, because it resulted for him that all these things were refuted; for having been present at all of these things and knowing them clearly, they would not have permitted him to say whatever he pleased; whereas before you, he thinks that by lying, while I speak the truth, he will prevail.
§30καίτοι περὶ ὧν ἐγκαλῶ, πάνθʼ ὑμῖν ἀπέδειξα σαφῶς, ὡς οἷός τʼ ἦν αὐτός.
And yet, concerning the things of which I accuse him, I have demonstrated everything clearly to you, as far as I myself was able.
τοὺς δʼ εἰδότας οὗτος ἔφευγεν, οὐχ ἡγούμενος εἶναι παραλογίσασθαι.
But he avoided those who knew the facts, not thinking it possible to deceive them.
μὴ τοίνυν, ὦ ἄνδρες δικασταί, μηδʼ ὑμεῖς ἐπιτρέπετʼ αὐτῷ ψεύδεσθαι καὶ διαβάλλειν, μεμνημένοι τῶν εἰρημένων· ἴστε γὰρ πάνθʼ ὡς ἐγένετο, πλὴν εἴ τι παρέλιπον ἐγὼ πρὸς ὀλίγον ὕδωρ ἀναγκαζόμενος λέγειν.
Therefore, men of the jury, do not you either permit him to lie and slander, remembering what has been said; for you know how everything happened, except if I have omitted something, being forced to speak with a small amount of water.
