§24ὅτι μὲν τοίνυν ἥ γε τούτων μήτηρ οὐκ ἐπηνέγκατο προῖκα, ἀλλʼ οὗτοι τοῦτο ψεύδονται, ἱκανῶς ὑμᾶς μεμαθηκέναι νομίζω· ὅτι δὲ ἡ ἐμὴ μήτηρ ἐπηνέγκατο, ῥᾳδίως ἐγὼ δείξω.
Thus, I think that you have sufficiently learned that their mother did not bring a dowry, but they lie about this; and that my mother did bring one, I will easily show.
πρῶτον μὲν γὰρ Πολυαράτου θυγάτηρ ἦν, ὃς καὶ ὑφʼ ὑμῶν ἐτιμᾶτο καὶ πολλὴν οὐσίαν ἐκέκτητο· ἔπειτα μεμαρτύρηται ὑμῖν ὡς καὶ ἡ ἀδελφὴ αὐτῆς τοσαύτην προῖκα ἐπενεγκαμένη Ἐρυξιμάχῳ συνῴκησεν, τῷ Χαβρίου κηδεστῇ.
For in the first place, she was the daughter of Polyaratus, who was both honored by you and possessed much wealth; secondly, it has been testified to you that her sister also, bringing as large a dowry, married Eryximachus, the brother-in-law of Chabrias.
§25πρὸς δὲ τούτοις φαίνεταί μου ἡ μήτηρ τὸ πρῶτον ἐκδοθεῖσα Κλεομέδοντι, οὗ φασι τὸν πατέρα Κλέωνα τῶν ὑμετέρων προγόνων στρατηγοῦντα, Λακεδαιμονίων πολλοὺς ἐν Πύλῳ ζῶντας λαβόντα, μάλιστα πάντων ἐν τῇ πόλει εὐδοκιμῆσαι· ὥστε οὔτε τὸν ἐκείνου προσῆκεν υἱὸν ἄπροικον αὐτὴν γῆμαι, οὔτε Μενέξενον καὶ Βάθυλλον εἰκός ἐστιν, αὐτούς τε οὐσίαν πολλὴν κεκτημένους καὶ Κλεομέδοντος τελευτήσαντος κομισαμένους τὴν προῖκα, ἀποστερῆσαι τὴν ἀδελφὴν τὴν ἑαυτῶν, ἀλλὰ προσθέντας αὐτοὺς ἐκδοῦναι τῷ ἡμετέρῳ πατρί, καθάπερ καὶ αὐτοὶ πρὸς ὑμᾶς καὶ οἱ ἄλλοι μεμαρτυρήκασιν.
In addition to these things, it appears that my mother was first given in marriage to Cleomedon, whose father, Cleon, they say, when generaling your ancestors, captured many Lacedaemonians alive at Pylos and won the highest reputation of all in the city; so that it was neither fitting for his son to marry her without a dowry, nor is it likely that Menexenus and Bathyllus—who themselves possessed much wealth and, when Cleomedon died, recovered the dowry—should have deprived their own sister of it, but rather that they, having added to it, gave her in marriage to our father, just as they themselves and the others have testified to you.
§26χωρὶς δὲ τούτων ἐνθυμήθητε, διὰ τί ἄν ποτε ὁ πατήρ, εἴπερ ἡ μὲν ἐμὴ μήτηρ μὴ ἦν ἐγγυητὴ μηδὲ ἠνέγκατο προῖκα, ἡ δὲ τούτων ἠνέγκατο, τοὺς μὲν οὐκ ἔφη αὑτοῦ υἱεῖς εἶναι, ἐμὲ δὲ καὶ ἐποιεῖτο καὶ ἐπαίδευεν;
Apart from these things, consider: why in the world would our father—if indeed my mother was not betrothed to him nor brought a dowry, while their mother did—have denied that they were his sons, while he both acknowledged and educated me?
ὅτι νὴ Δία, ὡς οὗτοι φήσουσιν, ἐμοὶ χαριζόμενος καὶ τῇ ἐμῇ μητρὶ τούτους ἠτίμαζεν.
Because, by Zeus, as they will say, to please me and my mother he treated these men with dishonor.
§27ἀλλʼ ἐκείνη μὲν ἔτι παῖδα μικρὸν ἐμὲ καταλιποῦσα αὐτὴ τὸν βίον ἐτελεύτησεν, ἡ δὲ τούτων μήτηρ Πλαγγὼν καὶ πρότερον καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα εὐπρεπὴς τὴν ὄψιν οὖσα ἐπλησίαζεν αὐτῷ· ὥστε πολὺ μᾶλλον εἰκὸς ἦν αὐτὸν διὰ τὴν ζῶσαν γυναῖκα, ἧς ἐρῶν ἐτύγχανε, τὸν τῆς τεθνεώσης υἱὸν ἀτιμάζειν, ἢ διʼ ἐμὲ καὶ τὴν τετελευτηκυῖαν τοὺς ἐκ τῆς ζώσης καὶ πλησιαζούσης αὐτῷ παῖδας μὴ ποιεῖσθαι.
But she died, leaving me behind when I was still a little child, while their mother, Plangon, being fair of face both before and after this, associated with him; so that it was much more likely that he, on account of the living woman whom he happened to love, would dishonor the son of the dead one, than that, on account of me and the deceased, he would refuse to acknowledge the children of the living woman who was close to him.
§28καίτοι οὗτός γε εἰς τοῦτο τόλμης ἥκει, ὥστε φησὶ τὸν πατέρα μου δεκάτην ὑπὲρ αὑτοῦ ἑστιᾶσαι.
And yet this man has reached such a pitch of audacity that he claims my father celebrated the tenth day on his behalf.
καὶ περὶ τούτου μόνον Τιμοκράτους καὶ Προμάχου ἐμβέβληται μαρτυρίας, οἳ οὔτε γένει προσήκουσί μου τῷ πατρὶ οὐδὲν οὔτε φίλοι ἦσαν ἐκείνῳ.
And concerning this alone he has submitted the depositions of Timocrates and Promachus, who are neither related by blood to my father in any way nor were they his friends.
οὕτω δὲ φανερῶς τὰ ψευδῆ μεμαρτυρήκασιν, ὥστε ὃν πάντων ὑμῶν εἰδότων οὑτοσὶ δίκην λαχὼν ἄκοντα ἠνάγκασε ποιήσασθαι αὑτόν, τοῦτον οὗτοι, ὥσπερ κλητῆρες, δύο μόνοι ὄντες μαρτυροῦσιν δεκάτην ὑπὲρ τούτου ἑστιᾶσαι.
And they have so clearly testified to what is false that, while you all know that this man, by bringing a lawsuit, compelled him against his will to adopt him, these two alone, like process-servers, testify that he celebrated the tenth day on his behalf.
§29οἷς τίς ἂν ὑμῶν πιστεύσειεν;
Whom of you would believe them?
καὶ μὴν οὐδʼ ἐκεῖνό γε εἰπεῖν αὐτῷ ἐνδέχεται, ὡς μικρὸν μὲν ὄντα ἐποιεῖτο αὐτὸν ὁ πατήρ, μείζω δὲ γενόμενον τῇ μητρὶ ὀργισθείς τι τῇ τούτων ἠτίμαζεν· πολὺ γὰρ δήπου μᾶλλον εἰώθασιν, ὧν ἂν ἐν αὑτοῖς διενεχθῶσιν γυνὴ καὶ ἀνήρ, διαλλάττεσθαι διὰ τοὺς παῖδας ἢ διὰ τὰς πρὸς ἑαυτοὺς ὀργὰς τοὺς κοινοὺς παῖδας πρὸς μισεῖν.
Moreover, it is not even open to him to say that when he was small his father acknowledged him, but when he grew larger, having become angry at their mother, he dishonored him; for they are, I suppose, much more accustomed, in whatever matters husband and wife differ among themselves, to be reconciled for the sake of their children, than, because of their anger toward each other, to hate their common children in addition.
ὥστε ἐὰν μὲν ἐπιχειρῇ ταῦτα λέγειν, μὴ ἐπιτρέπετε ἀναισχυντεῖν.
Therefore, if he attempts to say these things, do not permit him to behave shamelessly.
§30ἂν δὲ λέγῃ περὶ τῶν δικῶν ἃς ἀπεδιῄτησέν μου ὁ διαιτητής, καὶ φάσκῃ ὑπʼ ἐμοῦ ἀπαράσκευος ληφθῆναι, πρῶτον μὲν μέμνησθε ὅτι οὐκ ὀλίγος χρόνος ἐγένετο, ἐν ᾧ ἔδει παρασκευάσασθαι αὐτόν, ἀλλʼ ἔτη πολλά, ἔπειθʼ ὅτι οὗτος ἦν ὁ διώκων, ὥστε πολὺ μᾶλλον ἦν εἰκὸς ἐμὲ ὑπὸ τούτου ἀπαράσκευον ληφθῆναι ἢ τοῦτον ὑπʼ ἐμοῦ.
And if he speaks concerning the suits in which the arbitrator decided in my favor, and claims that he was caught unprepared by me, first bear in mind that the time in which he had to prepare himself was not short, but many years; secondly, that he was the prosecutor, so that it was much more likely that I should be caught unprepared by him than he by me.
§31ἔτι δὲ πάντες ὑμῖν οἱ πρὸς τῷ διαιτητῇ παρόντες μεμαρτυρήκασιν ὡς οὗτος παρὼν αὐτός, ὅτε ἀπεδιῄτησέ μου ὁ διαιτητής, οὔτε ἐφῆκεν εἰς τὸ δικαστήριον ἐνέμεινέ τε τῇ διαίτῃ.
Moreover, all those who were present before the arbitrator have testified to you that this man himself, being present when the arbitrator decided in my favor, neither appealed to the court and abided by the arbitration.
καίτοι ἄτοπον δοκεῖ μοι εἶναι, εἰ οἱ μὲν ἄλλοι, ὅταν οἴωνται ἀδικεῖσθαι, καὶ τὰς πάνυ μικρὰς δίκας εἰς ὑμᾶς ἐφιᾶσιν, οὗτος δέ μοι περὶ προικὸς δίκην ταλάντου λαχών, ταύτης, ὡς αὐτός φησιν, ἀδίκως ἀποδιαιτηθείσης ἐνέμεινεν.
And yet it seems to me to be absurd if other people, when they think they are being wronged, appeal even the very smallest suits to you, while this man, having brought against me a suit for a dowry of a talent, abided by it when this was, as he himself says, unjustly decided against him.
