§9ἀλλʼ ἀνάγκη μεγάλη τὰ καταλειφθέντα, πολλῷ πλείονʼ ὄντα τούτων, πάνθʼ ὑμᾶς ἔχειν ἐστίν, ἃ φανερῶς ὅτι διηρπάκατʼ ἐξελεγχόμενοι τοιαῦτα πλάττεσθαι τολμᾶτε.
But there is a great necessity that you must possess all the property left behind, which was much more than this, and which you dare to invent such stories only because you are clearly proved to have plundered them.
καὶ τοτὲ μὲν εἰς ἀλλήλους ἀναφέρετε, πάλιν δʼ εἰληφέναι κατʼ ἀλλήλων μαρτυρεῖτε.
And at one time you refer the blame to one another, and again you testify against one another that you received it.
φάσκοντες δʼ οὐ πολλὰ λαβεῖν μεγάλων ἀναλωμάτων λόγους ἀπενηνόχατε.
And while asserting that you did not receive much, you have submitted accounts of great expenditures.
§10πάντες δὲ κοινῇ μʼ ἐπιτροπεύσαντες ἰδίᾳ μετὰ ταῦθʼ ἕκαστος μηχανᾶσθε.
And though you all jointly acted as my guardians, you each privately scheme after this.
καὶ τὴν μὲν διαθήκην ἠφανίκατε, ἐξ ἧς ἦν εἰδέναι περὶ πάντων τὴν ἀλήθειαν, φαίνεσθε δʼ οὐδέποτε ταὐτὰ περὶ ἀλλήλων λέγοντες.
And you have made away with the will itself, from which it was possible to know the truth about all things, and you are seen never saying the same things about one another.
λαβὲ δὴ τὰς μαρτυρίας καὶ ἀνάγνωθʼ αὐτοῖς πάσας ἐφεξῆς, ἵνα μνησθέντες καὶ τῶν μεμαρτυρημένων καὶ τῶν εἰρημένων ἀκριβέστερον διαγιγνώσκωσι περὶ αὐτῶν. ΜΑΡΤΥΡIΑΙ.
Take the testimonies and read them all in order to them, so that having been reminded of both what was testified and what was said, they may judge more accurately about them. ΜΑΡΤΥΡIΑΙ.
§11ταῦθʼ οὗτοι πρὸς πεντεκαιδεκαταλάντους οἴκους συνετιμήσανθʼ ὑπὲρ ἐμοῦ· μνῶν δʼ οὐδʼ ἑβδομήκοντʼ ἀξίαν μοι παραδεδώκασι τὴν οὐσίαν τρεῖς ὄντες.
These things they assessed on my behalf in proportion to estates of fifteen talents; yet they, being three, have delivered to me property worth not even seventy minae.
λέγε τὰς ἐφεξῆς. ΜΑΡΤΥΡΙΑΙ.
ταύτην τὴν προῖκα οἵ τʼ ἐπίτροποι καταμαρτυροῦσιν αὐτὸν λαβεῖν, ἄλλοι τε πρὸς οὓς ἔχειν ὡμολόγησεν.
Read the next. ΜΑΡΤΥΡΙΑΙ. This dowry the guardians themselves testify that he received, as do others to whom he admitted he held it.
ταύτην οὔτʼ αὐτὴν οὔτε τὸν σῖτον ἀποδέδωκεν.
He has returned neither this dowry itself nor the maintenance.
λαβὲ τὰς ἄλλας καὶ ἀναγίγνωσκε. ΜΑΡΤΥΡΙΑΙ.

§12δύʼ ἔτη τὸ ἐργαστήριον διοικήσας Θηριππίδῃ μὲν ἀποδέδωκε τὴν μίσθωσιν· ἐμοὶ δέ, δυοῖν ἐτοῖν λαβὼν τὴν πρόσοδον, τριάκοντα μνᾶς, οὔτʼ αὐτὰς οὔτε τὸ ἔργον ἀποδέδωκεν.
Having managed the workshop for two years, he paid the rent to Therippides; but to me, having received thirty minae, the income of two years, he has returned neither that money itself nor the workshop itself.
λάβʼ ἑτέραν καὶ ἀνάγνωθι. ΜΑΡΤΥΡΙΑ.
ταῦτα τἀνδράποδʼ ὡς αὑτὸν λαβὼν οὗτος, καὶ τἄλλα τὰ μετὰ τούτων ὑποτεθένθʼ ἡμῖν, ἀνάλωμα μὲν εἰς αὐτὰ τοσοῦτο λελόγισται, λῆμμα δʼ ἀπʼ αὐτῶν οὐδʼ ὁτιοῦν, καὶ αὐτοὺς δὲ τοὺς ἀνθρώπους ἠφάνικεν, οἳ δώδεκα μνᾶς ἀτελεῖς ἑκάστου τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ προσέφερον.
Take another and read it. ΜΑΡΤΥΡΙΑ. This man, having taken these slaves for himself, and the other things mortgaged to us with them, has charged so much expenditure for them, but not a single drachma of income from them, and he has made the men themselves disappear, who brought in twelve minae free of charges every year.
λέγʼ ἑτέραν. ΜΑΡΤΥΡΙΑ §13τοῦτον τὸν ἐλέφαντα καὶ τὸν σίδηρον πεπρακὼς οὐδὲ καταλειφθῆναί φησιν, ἀλλὰ καὶ τούτων τὴν τιμὴν ἀποστερεῖ με, μάλιστα τάλαντον.
Read another. ΜΑΡΤΥΡΙΑ Having sold this ivory and the iron, he says that they were not even left behind, but he deprives me of their price as well, which is about a talent.
λέγε ταυτασί. ΜΑΡΤΥΡΙΑΙ.
ταῦθʼ οὗτος τρία τάλαντα καὶ χιλίας ἔχει χωρὶς τῶν ἄλλων.
Read these. ΜΑΡΤΥΡΙΑΙ. This man has these three talents and a thousand drachmas apart from the other things.
τοῦ μὲν οὖν ἀρχαίου πέντε τάλανθʼ ἃ εἴληφεν· σὺν δὲ τοῖς ἔργοις, ἂν ἐπὶ δραχμῇ τις τιθῇ μόνον, πλέον ἢ δέκα τάλαντʼ ἔχει.
So of the principal, he has taken five talents; and with the interest, if one calculates at only a drachma, he has more than ten talents.
λέγε τὰς ἐφεξῆς. ΜΑΡΤΥΡΙΑΙ.

§14ταῦθʼ οὗτοι γραφῆναι μὲν ἐν ταῖς διαθήκαις καὶ λαβεῖν σφᾶς αὐτοὺς κατʼ ἀλλήλων μαρτυροῦσιν.
They testify against one another that these things were written in the will and that they themselves received them.
οὗτος δὲ καὶ μεταπεμφθῆναι φάσκων ὑπὸ τοῦ πατρός, καὶ ἐλθὼν εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν, εἰσελθεῖν μὲν οὔ φησιν ὡς τὸν μεταπεμψάμενον, οὐδʼ ὁμολογῆσαι περὶ τούτων οὐδέν, Δημοφῶντος δʼ ἀκοῦσαι γραμματεῖον ἀναγιγνώσκοντος καὶ Θηριππίδου λέγοντος ὡς ἐκεῖνος ταῦτα διέθετο, καὶ προεισεληλυθὼς καὶ ἅπαντα διωμολογημένος πρὸς τὸν πατέρα, ὅσαπερ ἐκεῖνος γράψας κατέλιπεν.
But this man, while claiming that he was sent for by my father and came to the house, says that he did not go in to the one who sent for him, nor did he agree to any of these things, but only heard Demophon reading a document and Therippides saying that my father had so disposed of them; whereas in fact he had entered beforehand and agreed to all things with my father, whatsoever he wrote and left behind.
§15ὁ γὰρ πατήρ, ὦ ἄνδρες δικασταί, ὡς ᾔσθετο τὴν νόσον οὐκ ἀποφευξόμενος, συγκαλέσας τούτους τρεῖς ὄντας, καὶ συμπαρακαθισάμενος Δήμωνα τὸν ἀδελφόν, τὰ σώμαθʼ ἡμῶν εἰς τὰς χεῖρας ἐνέθηκεν παρακαταθήκην ἐπονομάζων, τὴν μὲν ἀδελφὴν Δημοφῶντι καὶ δύο τάλαντα προῖκα διδοὺς εὐθύς, καὶ γυναῖκʼ αὐτῷ ταύτην ἐγγυῶν, ἐμὲ δὲ πᾶσιν κοινῇ μετὰ τῶν χρημάτων παρακατατιθέμενος, καὶ ἐπισκήπτων μισθῶσαί τε τὸν οἶκον καὶ συνδιασῷσαί μοι τὴν οὐσίαν,
For my father, men of the jury, when he realized that he would not escape his illness, having called together these men, being three, and having seated Demon his brother beside them, placed our bodies into their hands, calling it a trust, giving my sister to Demophon with a dowry of two talents immediately, and betrothing her to him as his wife, and committing me to them all jointly along with the property, and charging them to lease the estate and preserve the property for me.
§16διδοὺς ἅμα τε Θηριππίδῃ τὰς ἑβδομήκοντα μνᾶς, καὶ τούτῳ τήν τʼ ἐμὴν μητέρʼ ἐγγυῶν ἐπὶ ταῖς ὀγδοήκοντα μναῖς, κἄμʼ εἰς τὰ τούτου γόνατα τιθείς·
Giving at the same time seventy minae to Therippides, and betrothing my mother to this man with the eighty minae, and placing me upon this man's knees.
ὧν οὗτος ὁ πάντων ἀνθρώπων ἀνοσιώτατος οὐδένα λόγον ἐποιήσατο, κύριος τῶν ἐμῶν γενόμενος ἐπὶ τούτοις, ἀλλὰ τὰ χρήματά με πάντʼ ἀπεστερηκὼς μετὰ τῶν συνεπιτρόπων, ἐλεεῖσθαι νῦν ὑφʼ ὑμῶν ἀξιώσει, μνῶν οὐδʼ ἑβδομήκοντʼ ἄξια τρίτος αὐτὸς ἀποδεδωκώς, εἶτα καὶ τούτοις αὐτοῖς πάλιν ἐπιβεβουλευκώς.
Of these things, this most unholy of all men has made no account, although he became master of my property on these conditions, but having deprived me of all my money with his co-guardians, he will now think fit to be pitied by you, though he as one of three has delivered property worth not even seventy minae, and then has further plotted against even this very property.
