Anecdotes of Lycurgus, His Children, and Genealogy

Passage 10 of 19 · Greek

Summary

This chunk details anecdotes of Lycurgus's outspokenness, the fate of his children after his death, his massive administrative and financial accomplishments, the genealogy of his descendants, and the numerous public honors and successful prosecutions he undertook.

He was also outspoken on account of his noble birth; indeed, when the Athenians once would not tolerate him as he was speaking in the assembly, and he was being hooted down, he cried out: "O Corcyraean whip, how many talents you are worth!" And again, when they were proclaiming Alexander a god, ¦15 he said, "And what kind of god would he be, from whose temple those departing must purify themselves by sprinkling?" And after his death, ¦842e they delivered his children to the Eleven, Menesaechmus having accused them and Thrasycles having brought a written indictment; but Demosthenes, during the time of his exile, ¦20 having written to the Athenians that they were in ill repute because of the children of Lycurgus, they repented and released them, Democles the pupil of Theophrastus having spoken in their defense.
He himself and some of his descendants were buried at public expense; and their monuments are opposite Athena Paeonia in the garden of Melanthius the philosopher, constructed as stone tables, with inscriptions for Lycurgus himself and his children ¦5 and preserved even to our time.
¦842f The greatest thing of all, he established a revenue of twelve hundred talents for the city, whereas sixty had previously come in.
And when he was about to die, he ordered himself to be carried to the Metroon and the Senate-house, wishing ¦10 to give an account of his administration; and when no one dared to accuse him except Menesaechmus, having cleared himself of the slanders, he was carried back to his house and died, having been regarded as upright throughout his whole life and praised in speeches; and without having lost any ¦15 lawsuit, although many had accused him.
He had three children by Callisto, the daughter of Habron and sister of Callias, the son of Habron of Bate, who was treasurer of military funds under the archonship of Chaerondas; ¦843a Deinarchus speaks about this marriage alliance ¦20 in his speech "Against Pistias." He left behind children: Habron, Lycurgus, and Lycophron.
Of these, Habron and Lycurgus died childless; but Habron died after having also entered public life with distinction, while Lycophron, marrying Callistomache, the daughter of Philip of Aexone, begot Callisto.
Cleombrotus, the son of Deinocrates of Acharnae, married her and begot Lycophron; and his grandfather Lycophron adopted him; and he ¦5 died childless.
After the death of Lycophron, ¦843b Socrates married Callisto and had a son, Symmachus; and of him was born Aristonymus, and of him Charmides, and of him Philippe; and of her and Lysander was born Medius, who also became an exegete from the Eumolpidae; and of him and Timothea, the daughter of Glaucus, the children were Laodameia and Medius, who held the priesthood of Poseidon Erechtheus, and Philippe, who afterwards served as priestess of Athena; but previously Diocles of Melite, marrying her, begat Diocles, who served as general over the ¦15 hoplites; and the latter, marrying Hediste, the daughter of Habron, begot Philippides and Nicostrate; ¦843c and Themistocles, the son of Theophrastus, the torch-bearer, marrying Nicostrate, begot Theophrastus and Diocles; and he also arranged the priesthood of Poseidon ¦20 Erechtheus.
Fifteen speeches of the orator are in circulation.
He was crowned by the people many times and was awarded statues; and a bronze statue of him stands in the Cerameicus according to a decree passed under the archonship of Anaxicrates; under whom Lycurgus himself and the eldest of his descendants also received public maintenance in the prytaneum according to the same decree; and when Lycurgus died, Lycophron, the eldest of his children, ¦843d claimed the gift.
He also spoke concerning sacred matters many times, having indicted Autolycus the Areopagite, Lysicles the general, Demades the son of Demeas, ¦5 and Menesaechmus, and many others, and he convicted them all.
He also brought Diphilus to trial for having removed from the silver mines the supporting pillars which sustained the weight above, and having enriched himself from them contrary to the laws; and although death was the penalty, ¦10 he secured his conviction, and distributed fifty drachmas from his estate to each of the citizens, the total sum collected being a hundred and sixty talents, ¦843e or, as some say, a mina.
And he convicted Aristogeiton at his audit, and Leocrates, and Autolycus for cowardice.
And Lycurgus was ¦15 nicknamed "Ibis", as in: "An ibis to Lycurgus, a bat to Chaerephon." And they traced their descent from these and from Erechtheus, the son of Ge and Hephaestus; and more immediately from Lycomedes and Lycurgus, whom the people honored with public ¦20 funerals.
And this genealogy of the family of those who served as priests of Poseidon is on a complete tablet dedicated in the Erechtheum, painted by Ismenias of Chalcis; and there are wooden statues of Lycurgus and his sons, Habron, Lycurgus, ¦5 ¦843f and Lycophron, which Timarchus and Cephisodotus, the sons of Praxiteles, made; and the tablet was dedicated by Habron his son, who, having obtained the priesthood by lot from the family, yielded it to his brother Lycophron; and for this reason Habron is represented ¦10 as handing over the trident to him.
And having made a record of all things that he administered, he set it up on a stele in front of the palaestra constructed by him, for those who wished to inspect; yet no one was able to convict the man of embezzlement.
And he also proposed a decree to crown Neoptolemus, ¦15 the son of Anticles, and to set up a statue of him, because he promised to gild the altar of ¦844a Apollo in the Agora according to the oracle of the god.
And he also proposed honors for Diotimus, the son of Diopeithes of Euonymon, under the archonship of Ctesicles.

Notes

  1. 842eὡς κακῶς ἀκούοιεν ἐπὶ τοῖς Λυκούργου παιδίοις — The optative of indirect speech (optative obliquus) used after a historical tense in the main clause (the participle ἐπιστείλαντος). The phrase κακῶς ἀκούω is an idiomatic passive expression meaning "to be in bad repute" or "to be spoken ill of."
  2. 843dἐφʼ οὗ ἔλαβε καὶ σίτησιν ἐν πρυτανείῳ αὐτός τε ὁ Λυκούργος καὶ ὁ πρεσβύτατος αὐτοῦ τῶν ἐκγόνων — The prepositional phrase ἐφʼ οὗ with the relative pronoun means "under whom" (referring to the archon Anaxicrates). Since Anaxicrates was archon in 307/6 BC, after Lycurgus's death, the subject "Lycurgus himself" receiving maintenance refers to the retrospective honor decreed in his name for his family, or reflects the verbatim wording of the honorary decree.
  3. 843dτοὺς μεσοκρινεῖς, οἳ ἐβάσταζον τὰ ὑπερκείμενα βάρη, ὑφελόντα — The participle ὑφελόντα (aorist active participle of ὑφαιρέω, accusative singular) modifies the proper name Diphilus, the object of the main verb ἔκρινε. The noun μεσοκρινεῖς refers to the supporting pillars left in the mines to hold up the ceiling; the participle phrase explains the illegal act for which he was prosecuted.
