§12.1ἐμπίπτει δὲ τοῖς προτεταγμένοις τῶν Ὄθωνος ἐκ δή τινος αἰτίας δόξα καὶ λόγος ὡς μεταβαλουμένων τῶν Οὐϊτελλίου στρατηγῶν πρὸς αὐτούς, ὡς οὖν ἐγγὺς ἦσαν, ἠσπάσαντο φιλίως συστρατιώτας προσαγορεύσαντες.
And a belief and report fell upon those of Otho's men drawn up in front, from some cause or other, that Vitellius's generals were changing sides to them; when therefore they were near, they greeted them friendly, addressing them as fellow-soldiers.
ἐκείνων δὲ τὴν προσαγόρευσιν οὐκ εὐμενῶς, ἀλλὰ μετὰ θυμοῦ καὶ φωνῆς πολεμικῆς ἀμειψαμένων, τοῖς μὲν ἀσπασαμένοις ἀθυμία, τοῖς δὲ λοιποῖς ὑπόνοια κατὰ τῶν ἀσπασαμένων ὡς προδιδόντων παρέστη.
But when those men received their greeting not kindly, but answered with anger and a warlike cry, despondency seized those who had greeted them, and suspicion arose in the rest against those who had greeted them, that they were betraying them.
§12.2καὶ τοῦτο πρῶτον αὑτοὺς ἐτάραξεν ἤδη τῶν πολεμίων ἐν χερσὶν ὄντων, εἶτα τῶν ἄλλων οὐδὲν ἦν κόσμῳ γινόμενον, ἀλλὰ πολλὴν μὲν ἀταξίαν τὰ σκευοφόρα τοῖς μαχομένοις ἐμπλαζόμενα παρεῖχε, πολλοὺς δὲ τὰ χωρία διασπασμοὺς ἐποίει τάφρων ὄντα μεστὰ καὶ ὀρυγμάτων, ἃ φοβούμενοι καὶ περιϊόντες ἠναγκάζοντο φύρδην καὶ κατὰ μέρη πολλὰ συμπλέκεσθαι τοῖς ἐναντίοις.
And this first threw them into confusion when the enemy were already close at hand; next, of the other things nothing was done in order, but the baggage-trains, becoming entangled with the combatants, caused great disorder, and the ground, being full of ditches and trenches, caused many breakups of the line, fearing and bypassing which they were forced to engage with the adversaries in a confused manner and in many separate groups.
§12.3μόναι δὲ δύο λεγεῶνες οὕτω γὰρ τὰ τάγματα Ῥωμαῖοι καλοῦσιν, ἐπίκλησιν ἡ μὲν Οὐϊτελλίου Ἅρπαξ, ἡ δὲ Ὄθωνος Βοηθός, εἰς πεδίον ἐξελίξασαι ψιλὸν καὶ ἀναπεπταμένον, νόμιμόν τινα μάχην, συμπεσοῦσαι φαλαγγηδόν, ἐμάχοντο πολὺν χρόνον.
But only two legions—for so the Romans call their divisions—by surname, that of Vitellius "the Rapax" and that of Otho "the Adiutrix", having deployed into a bare and open plain, clashed in close order and fought a regular battle for a long time.
οἱ μὲν οὖν Ὄθωνος ἄνδρες ἦσαν εὔρωστοι καὶ ἀγαθοί, πολέμου δὲ καὶ μάχης τότε πρῶτον πεῖραν λαμβάνοντες· οἱ δὲ Οὐϊτελλίου πολλῶν ἀγώνων ἐθάδες, ἤδη δὲ γηραιοὶ καὶ παρακμάζοντες.
Now Otho's men were vigorous and brave, but then for the first time making trial of war and battle; while those of Vitellius were accustomed to many contests, but were already old and past their prime.
§12.4ὁρμήσαντες οὖν ἐπʼ αὑτοὺς οἱ Ὄθωνος ἐώσαντο καὶ τόν ἀετὸν ἀφείλοντο, πάντας ὁμοῦ τι τοὺς προμάχους ἀποκτείναντες· οἱ δὲ ὑπὸ αἰσχύνης καὶ ὀργῆς ἐμπεσόντες αὐτοῖς τόν τε πρεσβευτὴν τοῦ τάγματος Ὀρφίδιον ἔκτειναν καὶ πολλὰ τῶν σημείων ἥρπασαν.
Charging therefore upon them, Otho's men pushed them back and took their eagle, killing almost all the front-rank men; but the others, falling upon them out of shame and anger, killed Orfidius, the commander of the legion, and snatched back many of the standards.
τοῖς δὲ μονομάχοις ἐμπειρίαν τε καὶ θάρσος ἔχειν πρὸς τὰς συμπλοκὰς δοκοῦσιν ἐπήγαγεν Οὔαρος Ἀλφῆνος τοὺς καλουμένους Βατάβους.
Against the gladiators, who were thought to have experience and courage for close-quarter fighting, Alfenus Varus brought up those called Batavians.
§12.5εἰσὶ δὲ Γερμανῶν ἱππεῖς ἄριστοι, νῆσον οἰκοῦντες ὑπὸ τοῦ Ῥήνου περιρρεομένην.
These are the best horsemen of the Germans, inhabiting an island surrounded by the Rhine.
τούτους ὀλίγοι μὲν τῶν μονομάχων ὑπέστησαν, οἱ δὲ πλεῖστοι φεύγοντες ἐπὶ τόν ποταμὸν ἐμπίπτουσιν εἰς σπείρας τῶν πολεμίων αὐτόθι τεταγμένας, ὑφʼ ὧν ἀμυνόμενοι πάντες ὁμαλῶς διεφθάρησαν.
Few of the gladiators resisted them, but most of them fled toward the river and fell in with cohorts of the enemy stationed there, by whom, defending themselves, they were all alike destroyed.
§12.6αἴσχιστα δὲ ἠγωνίσαντο πάντων οἱ στρατηγικοί, μηδὲ ὅσον ἐν χερσὶ γενέσθαι τοὺς ἐναντίους ὑπομείναντες, ἀλλὰ καὶ τοὺς ἀηττήτους ἔτι φόβου καὶ ταραχῆς ἀνεπίμπλασαν φεύγοντες διʼ αὐτῶν, οὐ μὴν ἀλλὰ πολλοί γε τῶν Ὄθωνος νενικηκότες τοὺς καθʼ αὑτοὺς ἐβιάσαντο καὶ διεξέπεσον διὰ τῶν πολεμίων κρατούντων εἰς τὸ στρατόπεδον.
But the praetorians fought most shamefully of all, not even waiting for the enemy to come to close quarters, but fleeing through those who were still undefeated, they filled them also with fear and confusion; nevertheless, many of Otho's men who had conquered those opposed to them forced their way through and escaped through the victorious enemy to the camp.
