§5.1ἐπεὶ δὲ Κρατερὸς καὶ Ἀντίπατρος τῶν Ἑλλήνων περιγενόμενοι διέβαινον εἰς Ἀσίαν τὴν Περδίκκου καταλύσοντες ἀρχήν, καὶ προσηγγέλλοντο μέλλοντες ἐμβαλεῖν εἰς Καππαδοκίαν, ὁ Περδίκκας αὐτὸς ἐπὶ Πτολεμαῖον στρατεύων ἀπέδειξε τὸν Εὐμενῆ τῶν ἐν Ἀρμενίᾳ, καὶ Καππαδοκίᾳ δυνάμεων αὐτοκράτορα στρατηγόν·
ἐπεὶ δὲ When Craterus and Antipater, having overcome the Greeks, were crossing into Asia to destroy the power of Perdiccas, and word was brought that they were about to invade Cappadocia, Perdiccas himself, while marching against Ptolemy, appointed Eumenes commander-in-chief of the forces in Armenia and Cappadocia.
§5.2καὶ περὶ τούτων ἐπιστολὰς ἔπεμψεν, Ἀλκέταν μὲν καὶ Νεοπτόλεμον Εὐμενεῖ προσέχειν κελεύσας, Εὐμενῆ δὲ χρῆσθαι τοῖς πράγμασιν ὅπως αὐτὸς ἔγνωκεν.
καὶ περὶ τούτων And concerning these matters he sent letters, ordering Alcetas and Neoptolemus to pay attention to Eumenes, and directing Eumenes to manage affairs as he himself saw fit.
Ἀλκέτας μὲν οὖν ἄντικρυς ἀπείπατο τὴν στρατείαν, ὡς τῶν ὑπʼ αὐτῷ Μακεδόνων Ἀντιπάτρῳ μὲν αἰδουμένων μάχεσθαι, Κρατερὸν δὲ καὶ δέχεσθαι διʼ εὔνοιαν ἑτοίμων ὄντων·
Now Alcetas outright refused the campaign, on the ground that the Macedonians under him were ashamed to fight against Antipater, and were ready to welcome Craterus because of goodwill.
Νεοπτόλεμος δὲ βουλεύων μὲν ἐπʼ Εὐμενεῖ προδοσίαν οὐκ ἔλαθε, καλούμενος δὲ οὐχ ὑπήκουεν, ἀλλὰ παρέταττε τὴν δύναμιν.
But Neoptolemus, though plotting treachery against Eumenes, did not escape notice, and when summoned, he did not obey, but drew up his force for battle.
§5.3ἔνθα πρῶτον ὁ Εὐμενὴς ἀπέλαυσε τῆς ἑαυτοῦ προνοίας καὶ παρασκευῆς· ἡττώμενος γὰρ ἤδη κατὰ τὸ πεζόν ἐτρέψατο τοῖς ἱππεῦσι τὸν Νεοπτόλεμον καὶ τὴν ἀποσκευὴν ἔλαβεν αὐτοῦ, καὶ τῇ φάλαγγι διεσπαρμένῃ περὶ τὴν δίωξιν ἅθρους ἐπελάσας ἠνάγκασε τὰ ὅπλα θέσθαι καὶ δόντας καὶ λαβόντας ὅρκους αὐτῷ συστρατεύειν.
ἔνθα πρῶτον Here Eumenes first reaped the fruit of his own foresight and preparation; for though he was already being worsted in the infantry engagement, he routed Neoptolemus with his cavalry and captured his baggage; and when their phalanx was scattered in the pursuit, he rode upon them with his forces in a body, and compelled them to lay down their arms and, after giving and receiving oaths, to serve with him.
§5.4ὁ μὲν οὖν Νεοπτόλεμος ὀλίγους τινὰς συναγαγὼν ἐκ τῆς τροπῆς ἔφυγε πρὸς Κρατερὸν καὶ Ἀντίπατρον.
ὁ μὲν οὖν Νεοπτόλεμος Neoptolemus, then, having gathered a few from the rout, fled to Craterus and Antipater.
παρʼ ἐκείνων δὲ ἀπέσταλτο πρεσβεία πρὸς Εὐμενῆ παρακαλοῦσα μεταθέσθαι πρὸς αὐτούς, καρπούμενον μὲν ἃς εἶχε σατραπείας, προσλαβόντα δὲ στρατιὰν καὶ χώραν παρʼ αὐτῶν, Ἀντιπάτρῳ μὲν ἀντʼ ἐχθροῦ φίλον γενόμενον, Κρατερῷ δὲ μὴ γενόμενον ἐκ φίλου πολέμιον.
From them an embassy was sent to Eumenes, urging him to transfer his allegiance to them, to enjoy the satrapies he held, and to receive additional troops and land from them, becoming a friend to Antipater instead of an enemy, and not becoming an enemy to Craterus instead of a friend.
§5.5ταῦτα ὁ Εὐμενὴς ἀκούσας Ἀντιπάτρῳ μὲν οὐκ ἂν ἔφη παλαιὸς ὢν ἐχθρὸς νῦν γενέσθαι φίλος, ὅτε αὐτὸν ὁρᾷ τοῖς φίλοις ὡς ἐχθροῖς χρώμενον, Κρατερὸν δὲ Περδίκκᾳ διαλλάττειν ἕτοιμος εἶναι καὶ συνάγειν ἐπὶ τοῖς ἴσοις καὶ δικαίοις· ἄρχοντος δὲ πλεονεξίας τῷ ἀδικουμένῳ βοηθήσειν μέχρι ἂν ἐμπνέῃ, καὶ μᾶλλον τὸ σῶμα καὶ τὸν βίον ἢ τὴν πίστιν προήσεσθαι.
ταῦτα ὁ Εὐμενὴς ἀκούσας When Eumenes heard this, he said that, as an old enemy, he would not now become a friend to Antipater, when he saw him treating his own friends as enemies; but that he was ready to reconcile Craterus with Perdiccas and to bring them together on fair and just terms; and if anyone began to take unfair advantage, he would aid the injured party as long as he had breath, and would sooner sacrifice his body and his life than his loyalty.
