When Alexander died and the phalanx was at variance with the companions, Eumenes in his sympathies aligned himself with the latter, but in his speech he was common to both and a private individual, saying that it was not fitting for him, who was a foreigner, to meddle in the disputes of Macedonians.
And when the other companions moved out of Babylon, he himself was left behind in the city and pacified many of the infantry, and made them more favorably disposed toward a reconciliation.
But when the generals, having mingled with one another and recovered from the first disturbances, divided the satrapies and military commands, Eumenes received Cappadocia and Paphlagonia and the land lying along the Pontic sea as far as Trapezus, which was not yet at that time under Macedonian rule—for Ariarathes was ruling over it—but it was necessary for Leonnatus and Antigonus with a large force to escort Eumenes and establish him as satrap of the country.
Antigonus, then, paid no attention to what had been written by Perdiccas, being already ambitious and looking down on everyone, but Leonnatus came down from upper country into Phrygia to undertake the expedition for Eumenes; however, since Hecataeus, the tyrant of the Cardians, was with him and begged him rather to help Antipater and the Macedonians who were besieged in Lamia, Leonnatus was eager to cross over, and invited Eumenes to join him and tried to reconcile him with Hecataeus.
For they had a sort of ancestral suspicion of one another, arising from political differences; and Eumenes had often been openly seen accusing Hecataeus of playing the tyrant and urging Alexander to restore freedom to the Cardians.
For which reason, when on this occasion also Eumenes declined the expedition against the Greeks, and said he feared Antipater, lest he might put him to death to please Hecataeus and because of his long-standing hatred, Leonnatus, trusting him, concealed nothing of what he was planning from him.
For the assistance was only a word and a pretext, and he had resolved, as soon as he crossed, to lay claim to Macedonia; and he showed certain letters from Cleopatra, who was inviting him to Pella with a view to marrying him.
But Eumenes, whether because he feared Antipater or because he despaired of Leonnatus as being unstable and full of erratic and impetuous impulses, decamped by night, taking his own baggage.
And he had three hundred horsemen, and two hundred armed servants, and gold amounting in value to five thousand talents of silver.
Having fled in this manner to Perdiccas and revealed Leonnatus' plans, he immediately held great influence with him and shared in his council; and shortly afterward he was escorted into Cappadocia with a force, Perdiccas himself being present and in command.
When Ariarathes had been taken prisoner and the country brought into subjection, Eumenes was appointed satrap.
And he turned over the cities to his own friends, established garrison commanders, and left behind such judges and administrators as he wished, Perdiccas meddling in none of these matters; and he himself set out along with him, both paying court to him and not wishing to be left behind by the kings.
