After this, a general assembly of the Greeks being held, Aristides proposed a decree: that there should assemble at Plataea every year delegates and sacred envoys from Greece, and that a quinquennial game of the Eleutheria should be celebrated; and further, that there should be a general Greek levy of ten thousand shields, one thousand horsemen, and one hundred ships for the war against the barbarians, and that the Plataeans should be set apart as inviolable and sacred, offering sacrifice to the god on behalf of Greece.
When these measures had been ratified, the Plataeans undertook to make solemn offerings to the Greeks who fell and lay buried there, every year.
And this they perform even to this day in the following manner: on the sixteenth day of the month Maimacterion, which among the Boeotians is Alalcomenius, they send a procession, which is led at daybreak by a trumpeter sounding the charge, and there follow wagons full of myrtle and wreaths, and a black bull, and free youths carrying libations of wine and milk in amphorae, and jars of oil and myrrh; for it is not permitted for any slave to touch any part of that service, because those men died for freedom.
And behind them all proceeds the archon of the Plataeans, who at other times is permitted neither to touch iron nor to wear any clothing except white, but then, dressed in a scarlet tunic, carrying a water-jar from the archive-chamber, and holding a sword, goes through the middle of the city to the tombs.
Then, having taken water from the spring, he himself washes the gravestones and anoints them with myrrh, and having slaughtered the bull at the funeral pyre and made prayers to Zeus and chthonic Hermes, he summons those brave men who died for Greece to the banquet and the blood-offering.
Then, having mixed a bowl of wine and poured it out, he says: "I drink to the men who died for the freedom of the Greeks." These things, then, the Plataeans still observe even to this day.
