§8.91.1ταῦτ’ οὖν ἐκ πλέονός τε ὁ Θηραμένης διεθρόει καὶ ἐπειδὴ οἱ ἐκ τῆς Λακεδαίμονος πρέσβεις οὐδὲν πράξαντες ἀνεχώρησαν τοῖς ξύμπασι ξυμβατικόν, φάσκων κινδυνεύσειν τὸ τεῖχος τοῦτο καὶ τὴν πόλιν διαφθεῖραι.
These, then, were the rumors which Theramenes had been spreading for some time past; and when the envoys from Lacedaemon returned without having accomplished anything in the way of a general agreement for the whole state, he declared still more insistently that this wall would run the risk of ruining the city.
§8.91.2ἅμα γὰρ καὶ ἐκ τῆς Πελοποννήσου ἐτύγχανον Εὐβοέων ἐπικαλουμένων κατὰ τὸν αὐτὸν χρόνον τοῦτον δύο καὶ τεσσαράκοντα νῆες, ὧν ἦσαν καὶ ἐκ Τάραντος καὶ Λοκρῶν Ἰταλιώτιδες καὶ Σικελικαί τινες, ὁρμοῦσαι ἤδη ἐπὶ Λᾷ τῆς Λακωνικῆς καὶ παρασκευαζόμεναι τὸν ἐς τὴν Εὔβοιαν πλοῦν (ἦρχε δὲ αὐτῶν Ἀγησανδρίδας Ἀγησάνδρου Σπαρτιάτης)·
For at this very same time it happened that forty-two ships from the Peloponnese, which had been summoned by the Euboeans—including some Italian vessels from Tarentum and Locri, and some Sicilian ones—were already riding at anchor at Las in Laconia and preparing for their voyage to Euboea (their commander being Agesandridas, son of Agesandras, a Spartan).
ἃς ἔφη Θηραμένης οὐκ Εὐβοίᾳ μᾶλλον ἢ τοῖς τειχίζουσι τὴν Ἠετιωνείαν προσπλεῖν, καὶ εἰ μή τις ἤδη φυλάξεται, λήσειν διαφθαρέντας.
Theramenes asserted that these ships were sailing, not so much to Euboea, as to those who were fortifying Eetioneia, and that unless people were on their guard immediately, they would be destroyed before they knew it.
§8.91.3ἦν δέ τι καὶ τοιοῦτον ἀπὸ τῶν τὴν κατηγορίαν ἐχόντων, καὶ οὐ πάνυ διαβολὴ μόνον τοῦ λόγου.
And indeed there was some such purpose on the part of those who were under accusation, and the story was not altogether a mere calumny.
ἐκεῖνοι γὰρ μάλιστα μὲν ἐβούλοντο ὀλιγαρχούμενοι ἄρχειν καὶ τῶν ξυμμάχων, εἰ δὲ μή, τάς τε ναῦς καὶ τὰ τείχη ἔχοντες αὐτονομεῖσθαι, ἐξειργόμενοι δὲ καὶ τούτου μὴ οὖν ὑπὸ τοῦ δήμου γε αὖθις γενομένου αὐτοὶ πρὸ τῶν ἄλλων μάλιστα διαφθαρῆναι, ἀλλὰ καὶ τοὺς πολεμίους ἐσαγαγόμενοι ἄνευ τειχῶν καὶ νεῶν ξυμβῆναι καὶ ὁπωσοῦν τὰ τῆς πόλεως ἔχειν, εἰ τοῖς γε σώμασι σφῶν ἄδεια ἔσται.
For their primary wish was to rule both the allies and themselves under an oligarchy; but if that was impossible, to retain their ships and walls and remain independent; and if they were excluded from this also, rather than be the very first to be destroyed by the restored democracy, they wished even to bring in the enemy and, stripped of walls and ships, to make terms on any conditions whatsoever for the state, provided only that they should have security for their own lives.
