§7.18.1παρεσκευάζοντο δὲ καὶ τὴν ἐς τὴν Ἀττικὴν ἐσβολὴν οἱ Λακεδαιμόνιοι, ὥσπερ τε προυδέδοκτο αὐτοῖς καὶ τῶν Συρακοσίων καὶ Κορινθίων ἐναγόντων, ἐπειδὴ ἐπυνθάνοντο τὴν ἀπὸ τῶν Ἀθηναίων βοήθειαν ἐς τὴν Σικελίαν, ὅπως δὴ ἐσβολῆς γενομένης διακωλυθῇ.
The Lacedaemonians were also preparing the invasion into Attica, just as had been previously decided by them, and with the Syracusans and Corinthians urging them, since they heard of the assistance sent by the Athenians to Sicily, so that indeed, by an invasion having taken place, it might be hindered.
καὶ ὁ Ἀλκιβιάδης προσκείμενος ἐδίδασκε τὴν Δεκέλειαν τειχίζειν καὶ μὴ ἀνιέναι τὸν πόλεμον.
And Alcibiades, pressuring them, urged them to fortify Decelea and not to let up the war.
§7.18.2μάλιστα δὲ τοῖς Λακεδαιμονίοις ἐγεγένητό τις ῥώμη, διότι τοὺς Ἀθηναίους ἐνόμιζον διπλοῦν τὸν πόλεμον ἔχοντας, πρός τε σφᾶς καὶ Σικελιώτας, εὐκαθαιρετωτέρους ἔσεσθαι, καὶ ὅτι τὰς σπονδὰς προτέρους λελυκέναι ἡγοῦντο αὐτούς·
Most of all, a certain confidence had arisen in the Lacedaemonians, because they thought that the Athenians, having a double war against both themselves and the Siceliots, would be easier to overthrow, and because they considered that the Athenians had been the first to break the treaty.
ἐν γὰρ τῷ προτέρῳ πολέμῳ σφέτερον τὸ παρανόμημα μᾶλλον γενέσθαι, ὅτι τε ἐς Πλάταιαν ἦλθον Θηβαῖοι ἐν σπονδαῖς, καὶ εἰρημένον ἐν ταῖς πρότερον ξυνθήκαις ὅπλα μὴ ἐπιφέρειν, ἢν δίκας ἐθέλωσι διδόναι, αὐτοὶ οὐχ ὑπήκουον ἐς δίκας προκαλουμένων τῶν Ἀθηναίων.
For they thought that in the former war the transgression had rather been on their own side, because the Thebans had entered Plataea during a truce, and although it was specified in the former treaty not to bring arms if they were willing to submit to arbitration, they themselves did not comply when the Athenians challenged them to arbitration.
καὶ διὰ τοῦτο εἰκότως δυστυχεῖν τε ἐνόμιζον, καὶ ἐνεθυμοῦντο τήν τε περὶ Πύλον ξυμφορὰν καὶ εἴ τις ἄλλη αὐτοῖς ἐγένετο.
And for this reason they thought they were reasonably meeting with misfortune, and they brooded over the disaster at Pylos and whatever other misfortune had happened to them.
§7.18.3ἐπειδὴ δὲ οἱ Ἀθηναῖοι ταῖς τριάκοντα ναυσὶν ἐξ Ἄργους ὁρμώμενοι Ἐπιδαύρου τέ τι καὶ Πρασιῶν καὶ ἄλλα ἐδῄωσαν καὶ ἐκ Πύλου ἅμα ἐλῃστεύοντο, καὶ ὁσάκις περί του διαφοραὶ γένοιντο τῶν κατὰ τὰς σπονδὰς ἀμφισβητουμένων, ἐς δίκας προκαλουμένων τῶν Λακεδαιμονίων οὐκ ἤθελον ἐπιτρέπειν, τότε δὴ οἱ Λακεδαιμόνιοι νομίσαντες τὸ παρανόμημα, ὅπερ καὶ σφίσι πρότερον ἡμάρτητο, αὖθις ἐς τοὺς Ἀθηναίους τὸ αὐτὸ περιεστάναι, πρόθυμοι ἦσαν ἐς τὸν πόλεμον.
But when the Athenians, setting out from Argos with thirty ships, ravaged some parts of Epidaurus and Prasiai and other places, and at the same time conducted raids from Pylos, and as often as disputes arose concerning any of the matters contested under the treaty, the Athenians were unwilling to submit to arbitration when the Lacedaemonians invited them, then indeed the Lacedaemonians, thinking that the transgression which had previously been committed by themselves had now in turn come round to the Athenians, were eager for the war.
§7.18.4καὶ ἐν τῷ χειμῶνι τούτῳ σίδηρόν τε περιήγγελλον κατὰ τοὺς ξυμμάχους καὶ τἆλλα ἐργαλεῖα ἡτοίμαζον ἐς τὸν ἐπιτειχισμόν, καὶ τοῖς ἐν τῇ Σικελίᾳ ἅμα ὡς ἀποπέμψοντες ἐν ταῖς ὁλκάσιν ἐπικουρίαν αὐτοί τε ἐπόριζον καὶ τοὺς ἄλλους Πελοποννησίους προσηνάγκαζον.
And in this winter they sent orders around to the allies for iron, and prepared other tools for the fortification, and at the same time they themselves were procuring aid to send in merchant ships to those in Sicily, and were compelling the other Peloponnesians to do so.
καὶ ὁ χειμὼν ἐτελεύτα, καὶ ὄγδοον καὶ δέκατον ἔτος τῷ πολέμῳ ἐτελεύτα τῷδε ὃν Θουκυδίδης ξυνέγραψεν.
And the winter ended, and the eighteenth year ended of this war which Thucydides wrote.
