§6.99.1καὶ τῇ ὑστεραίᾳ οἱ μὲν ἐτείχιζον τῶν Ἀθηναίων τὸ πρὸς βορέαν τοῦ κύκλου τεῖχος, οἱ δὲ λίθους καὶ ξύλα ξυμφοροῦντες παρέβαλλον ἐπὶ τὸν Τρωγίλον καλούμενον αἰεί, ᾗπερ βραχύτατον ἐγίγνετο αὐτοῖς ἐκ τοῦ μεγάλου λιμένος ἐπὶ τὴν ἑτέραν θάλασσαν τὸ ἀποτείχισμα.
On the following day, some of the Athenians were building the wall on the north side of the circular fort, while others, collecting stones and timber, were laying them along toward the place always called Trogilus, where the blockading wall from the Great Harbor to the other sea would be shortest for them.
§6.99.2οἱ δὲ Συρακόσιοι οὐχ ἥκιστα Ἑρμοκράτους τῶν στρατηγῶν ἐσηγησαμένου μάχαις μὲν πανδημεὶ πρὸς Ἀθηναίους οὐκέτι ἐβούλοντο διακινδυνεύειν, ὑποτειχίζειν δὲ ἄμεινον ἐδόκει εἶναι, ᾗ ἐκεῖνοι ἔμελλον ἄξειν τὸ τεῖχος καί, εἰ φθάσειαν, ἀποκλῄσεις γίγνεσθαι, καὶ ἅμα καὶ ἐν τούτῳ εἰ ἐπιβοηθοῖεν, μέρος ἀντιπέμπειν αὐτοῖς τῆς στρατιᾶς καὶ φθάνειν αὐτοὶ προκαταλαμβάνοντες τοῖς σταυροῖς τὰς ἐφόδους, ἐκείνους δὲ ἂν παυομένους τοῦ ἔργου πάντας ἂν πρὸς σφᾶς τρέπεσθαι.
The Syracusans, not least because Hermocrates, one of the generals, had advised it, were no longer willing to risk battles with their whole force against the Athenians, but decided that it was better to build a counter-wall in the direction where the Athenians were intending to lead their wall; and if they could get ahead of them, the Athenian progress would be blocked, and at the same time, if the Athenians should attack them during this work, they could send a part of their army against them, and get ahead of them by pre-occupying the approaches with palisades, while the Athenians, ceasing from their work, would all be forced to turn against them.
§6.99.3ἐτείχιζον οὖν ἐξελθόντες ἀπὸ τῆς σφετέρας πόλεως ἀρξάμενοι, κάτωθεν τοῦ κύκλου τῶν Ἀθηναίων ἐγκάρσιον τεῖχος ἄγοντες, τάς τε ἐλάας ἐκκόπτοντες τοῦ τεμένους καὶ πύργους ξυλίνους καθιστάντες.
Accordingly they went out from their own city and began to build, leading a cross-wall below the circle of the Athenians, cutting down the olive trees of the sacred precinct and erecting wooden towers.
§6.99.4αἱ δὲ νῆες τῶν Ἀθηναίων οὔπω ἐκ τῆς Θάψου περιεπεπλεύκεσαν ἐς τὸν μέγαν λιμένα, ἀλλ᾽ ἔτι οἱ Συρακόσιοι ἐκράτουν τῶν περὶ τὴν θάλασσαν, κατὰ γῆν δ’ ἐκ τῆς Θάψου οἱ Ἀθηναῖοι τὰ ἐπιτήδεια ἐπήγοντο.
The ships of the Athenians had not yet sailed round from Thapsus into the Great Harbor, but the Syracusans still controlled the sea; however, the Athenians were bringing up their provisions by land from Thapsus.
