Around the same time, Lamis also arrived in Sicily from Megara leading a colony. He founded a place called Trotilus above the river Pantacyas, and later, setting out from there, shared citizenship with the Chalcidians at Leontini for a short time; but being expelled by them and having founded Thapsus, he himself died. The others, however, having moved from Thapsus, founded Megara, called Hyblaea, because Hyblon, a Sicel king, betrayed the land to them and led them there.
After living there for two hundred and forty-five years, they were expelled from their city and land by Gelon, tyrant of Syracuse.
But before their expulsion, a hundred years after they had founded their own city, they sent Pamillus and founded Selinus; Pamillus, coming from Megara, which was their mother city, joined them in founding it.
Gela was founded jointly by Antiphemus from Rhodes and Entimus from Crete, who led colonists there, in the forty-fifth year after the founding of Syracuse.
The city received its name from the river Gelas, and the place where the city now stands and which was first fortified is called Lindioi; and Doric laws were established for them.
Almost a hundred and eight years after their own founding, the Geloans founded Acragas, naming the city after the river Acragas, making Aristonous and Pystilus its founders, and giving them the laws of Gela.
Zancle was at first founded by pirates arriving from Cyme, the Chalcidian city in Opicia, but later a multitude also came from Chalcis and the rest of Euboea and shared the land with them; and Perieres and Crataemenes became its founders, the one from Cyme, the other from Chalcis.
Its name at first was Zancle, so called by the Sicels, because the place is sickle-shaped in appearance (and the Sicels call a sickle zancion); but later they themselves were expelled by Samian and other Ionian refugees from the Medes, who had touched at Sicily.
Not long afterwards, Anaxilas, tyrant of Rhegium, expelled the Samians, and having himself settled the city with a mixed population, renamed it Messene after his own ancient fatherland.
