§5.82.1τοῦ δ’ ἐπιγιγνομένου θέρους Διῆς τε οἱ ἐν Ἄθῳ ἀπέστησαν Ἀθηναίων πρὸς Χαλκιδέας, καὶ Λακεδαιμόνιοι τὰ ἐν Ἀχαΐᾳ οὐκ ἐπιτηδείως πρότερον ἔχοντα καθίσταντο.
In the following summer, the Dians in Athos revolted from the Athenians to the Chalcidians, and the Lacedaemonians settled the affairs of Achaea, which had previously been in an unfavorable state for them.
§5.82.2καὶ Ἀργείων ὁ δῆμος κατ’ ὀλίγον ξυνιστάμενός τε καὶ ἀναθαρσήσας ἐπέθεντο τοῖς ὀλίγοις, τηρήσαντες αὐτὰς τὰς γυμνοπαιδίας τῶν Λακεδαιμονίων· καὶ μάχης γενομένης ἐν τῇ πόλει ἐπεκράτησεν ὁ δῆμος, καὶ τοὺς μὲν ἀπέκτεινε, τοὺς δὲ ἐξήλασεν.
And the popular party of the Argives, gradually combining and recovering their courage, attacked the oligarchical party, watching for the very time of the Gymnopaidia of the Lacedaemonians; and a battle having taken place in the city, the popular party got the upper hand, and killed some and banished others.
§5.82.3οἱ δὲ Λακεδαιμόνιοι, ἕως μὲν αὐτοὺς μετεπέμποντο οἱ φίλοι, οὐκ ἦλθον ἐκ πλέονος, ἀναβαλόμενοι δὲ τὰς γυμνοπαιδίας ἐβοήθουν.
The Lacedaemonians, indeed, as long as their friends were sending for them, had long delayed to come, but at last, postponing the Gymnopaidia, they set out to relieve them.
καὶ ἐν Τεγέᾳ πυθόμενοι ὅτι νενίκηνται οἱ ὀλίγοι, προελθεῖν μὲν οὐκέτι ἠθέλησαν δεομένων τῶν διαπεφευγότων, ἀναχωρήσαντες δὲ ἐπ᾽ οἴκου τὰς γυμνοπαιδίας ἦγον.
And when they heard at Tegea that the oligarchical party had been defeated, they refused to advance any further, despite the entreaties of those who had escaped, but returned home and celebrated the Gymnopaidia.
§5.82.4καὶ ὕστερον ἐλθόντων πρέσβεων ἀπό τε τῶν ἐν τῇ πόλει [ἀγγέλων] καὶ τῶν ἔξω Ἀργείων, παρόντων τε τῶν ξυμμάχων καὶ ῥηθέντων πολλῶν ἀφ’ ἑκατέρων ἔγνωσαν μὲν ἀδικεῖν τοὺς ἐν τῇ πόλει, καὶ ἔδοξεν αὐτοῖς στρατεύειν ἐς Ἄργος, διατριβαὶ δὲ καὶ μελλήσεις ἐγίγνοντο.
And later, when ambassadors arrived both from those in the city and from the Argives who were outside, and in the presence of the allies and after many arguments had been urged on both sides, they decided that those in the city were in the wrong, and decreed to march against Argos; but delays and procrastinations took place.
§5.82.5ὁ δὲ δῆμος τῶν Ἀργείων ἐν τούτῳ φοβούμενος τοὺς Λακεδαιμονίους καὶ τὴν τῶν Ἀθηναίων ξυμμαχίαν πάλιν προσαγόμενός τε καὶ νομίζων μέγιστον ἂν σφᾶς ὠφελῆσαι, τειχίζει μακρὰ τείχη ἐς θάλασσαν, ὅπως, ἢν τῆς γῆς εἴργωνται, ἡ κατὰ θάλασσαν σφᾶς μετὰ τῶν Ἀθηναίων ἐπαγωγὴ τῶν ἐπιτηδείων ὠφελῇ.
Meanwhile, the popular party of the Argives, fearing the Lacedaemonians and trying to bring back the Athenian alliance, believing that it would be of the greatest service to them, built long walls down to the sea, so that if they should be shut out from the land, the importation of provisions by sea with the help of the Athenians might benefit them.
§5.82.6ξυνῄδεσαν δὲ τὸν τειχισμὸν καὶ τῶν ἐν Πελοποννήσῳ τινὲς πόλεων.
And some of the Peloponnesian cities were also privy to the building of the walls.
καὶ οἱ μὲν Ἀργεῖοι πανδημεί, καὶ αὐτοὶ καὶ γυναῖκες καὶ οἰκέται, ἐτείχιζον· καὶ ἐκ τῶν Ἀθηνῶν αὐτοῖς ἦλθον τέκτονες καὶ λιθουργοί.
The Argives, with their whole population, themselves, their wives, and their slaves, worked at the building; and there came to them from Athens carpenters and masons.
καὶ τὸ θέρος ἐτελεύτα.
And the summer ended.
