Meanwhile, a message reached them from their supporters in Tegea that, unless they came quickly, Tegea would defect from them to the Argives and their allies, and indeed had all but defected already.
Thereupon, a rapid levy of the Lacedaemonians, both of themselves and of the Helots, was made en masse, on a scale such as had never been seen before.
They marched to Orestheum in Maenalia; and they sent word beforehand to those of the Arcadians who were their allies to assemble and follow close on their heels to Tegea. They themselves, having all gone as far as Orestheum, sent a sixth part of their own force—consisting of the oldest and the youngest—back home to guard their domestic affairs, and with the rest of the army they arrived at Tegea.
Not long afterwards, their allies from Arcadia also arrived.
They also sent messengers to Corinth, and to the Boeotians, Phocians, and Locrians, ordering them to bring aid with all speed to Mantinea.
But for these allies, the summons was at short notice, and it was not easy to pass through the enemy's territory (which lay in between and blocked the way) except in a body and after waiting for one another; nevertheless, they made haste.
The Lacedaemonians, taking with them the Arcadian allies who were present, invaded the territory of Mantinea, and having encamped near the Heracleum, they ravaged the land.
