§2.86.1οἱ δ’ ἐν τῇ Κυλλήνῃ Πελοποννήσιοι, ἐν τούτῳ ἐν ᾧ οἱ Ἀθηναῖοι περὶ Κρήτην κατείχοντο, παρεσκευασμένοι ὡς ἐπὶ ναυμαχίαν παρέπλευσαν ἐς Πάνορμον τὸν Ἀχαϊκόν, οὗπερ αὐτοῖς ὁ κατὰ γῆν στρατὸς τῶν Πελοποννησίων προσεβεβοηθήκει.
Meanwhile, the Peloponnesians at Cyllene, during the time when the Athenians were detained around Crete, having prepared themselves as if for a sea-fight, sailed along the coast to Panormus in Achaea, where the land forces of the Peloponnesians had come to their assistance.
§2.86.2παρέπλευσε δὲ καὶ ὁ Φορμίων ἐπὶ τὸ Ῥίον τὸ Μολυκρικὸν καὶ ὡρμίσατο ἔξω αὐτοῦ ναυσὶν εἴκοσιν, αἷσπερ καὶ ἐναυμάχησεν.
Phormio also sailed along the coast to the Molycrian Rhium, and anchored outside of it with the twenty ships with which he had fought the previous battle.
§2.86.3ἦν δὲ τοῦτο μὲν τὸ Ῥίον φίλιον τοῖς Ἀθηναίοις, τὸ δ’ ἕτερον Ῥίον ἐστὶν ἀντιπέρας, τὸ ἐν τῇ Πελοποννήσῳ· διέχετον δὲ ἀπ’ ἀλλήλων σταδίους μάλιστα ἑπτὰ τῆς θαλάσσης, τοῦ δὲ Κρισαίου κόλπου στόμα τοῦτό ἐστιν.
Now this Rhium was friendly to the Athenians, while the other Rhium is opposite to it, in the Peloponnese; and they are distant from each other by about seven stades of sea, and this is the mouth of the Crisaean Gulf.
§2.86.4ἐπὶ οὖν τῷ Ῥίῳ τῷ Ἀχαϊκῷ οἱ Πελοποννήσιοι, ἀπέχοντι οὐ πολὺ τοῦ Πανόρμου, ἐν ᾧ αὐτοῖς ὁ πεζὸς ἦν, ὡρμίσαντο καὶ αὐτοὶ ναυσὶν ἑπτὰ καὶ ἑβδομήκοντα, ἐπειδὴ καὶ τοὺς Ἀθηναίους εἶδον.
The Peloponnesians, therefore, when they saw the Athenians, also came to anchor with seventy-seven ships at the Achaean Rhium, which is not far from Panormus, where their infantry was stationed.
§2.86.5καὶ ἐπὶ μὲν ἓξ ἢ ἑπτὰ ἡμέρας ἀνθώρμουν ἀλλήλοις μελετῶντές τε καὶ παρασκευαζόμενοι τὴν ναυμαχίαν, γνώμην ἔχοντες οἱ μὲν μὴ ἐκπλεῖν ἔξω τῶν Ῥίων ἐς τὴν εὐρυχωρίαν, φοβούμενοι τὸ πρότερον πάθος, οἱ δὲ μὴ ἐσπλεῖν ἐς τὰ στενά, νομίζοντες πρὸς ἐκείνων εἶναι τὴν ἐν ὀλίγῳ ναυμαχίαν.
For six or seven days they lay at anchor opposite to one another, practicing and preparing for the sea-fight, the one side intending not to sail out beyond the Rhia into the open water, fearing their former disaster, and the other intending not to sail into the narrows, believing that a battle in a confined space would be in favor of the enemy.
§2.86.6ἔπειτα ὁ Κνῆμος καὶ ὁ Βρασίδας καὶ οἱ ἄλλοι τῶν Πελοποννησίων στρατηγοί, βουλόμενοι ἐν τάχει τὴν ναυμαχίαν ποιῆσαι πρίν τι καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν Ἀθηναίων ἐπιβοηθῆσαι, ξυνεκάλεσαν τοὺς στρατιώτας πρῶτον, καὶ ὁρῶντες αὐτῶν τοὺς πολλοὺς διὰ τὴν προτέραν ἧσσαν φοβουμένους καὶ οὐ προθύμους ὄντας παρεκελεύσαντο καὶ ἔλεξαν τοιάδε.
Afterwards, Cnemus, Brasidas, and the other Peloponnesian generals, wishing to bring on the sea-fight quickly, before any assistance should arrive from the Athenians, first called the soldiers together; and seeing that most of them were afraid because of their former defeat and were not eager, they exhorted them and spoke as follows.
