Ἢν δὲ ὁ ἀρχὸς ἐκπίπτῃ, ἀνώσας σπόγγῳ μαλθακῷ, καὶ καταχρίσας κοχλίῃ, τῶν χειρῶν δήσας, ἐκκρέμασον ὀλίγον χρόνον, καὶ εἴσεισιν.
If the rectum protrudes, having pushed it up with a soft sponge, and smeared it with snail-slime, having bound him by the hands, hang him up for a short time, and it will return.
Ἢν δὲ μεῖζον ἐκπέσῃ καὶ μὴ μένῃ ἔνδον, διαζώσας ἐν τῇσι λαγόσι, καὶ ὑφεὶς ὄπισθεν ἐκ τοῦ διαζώματος ταινίην, ὤσας ἔσω τὸν ἀρχὸν, προσθεῖναι σπόγγον μαλθακὸν βρέξας ὕδατι θερμῷ, ἐνεψήσας λωτοῦ πρίσματα·
But if it protrudes further and does not remain inside, having girded him about the flanks, and having passed a band from behind under the girdle, and having pushed the rectum inside, apply a soft sponge soaked in warm water in which the sawdust of lotus wood has been boiled.
καταχέαι δὲ καὶ κατὰ τοῦ ἀρχοῦ ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ τοῦ ὕδατος, τὸν δὲ σπόγγον ἐκπιέσαι· ἔπειτα ὑποτείνας τὴν ταινίην διὰ μέσων τῶν σκελέων, ἀναδῆσαι περὶ τὸν ὀμφαλόν.
And pour also some of this very water over the rectum, and squeeze out the sponge; then, having stretched the band through the middle of the legs, tie it up around the navel.
Ὅταν δὲ θέλῃ ἀφοδεύειν, ἐπὶ λασάνοισιν ὡς στενοτάτοισιν ἀφοδευέτω· ἢν δὲ παιδίον ᾖ, ἐπὶ γυναικὸς τῶν ποδῶν, πρὸς τὰ γούνατα προσκλιθείς.
And when he wishes to evacuate, let him evacuate on a stool as narrow as possible; but if it is a child, upon the legs of a woman, leaning against her knees.
Ὅταν δὲ ἀφοδεύῃ, τὰ σκέλεα ἐκτεινάτω· οὕτω γὰρ ἂν ἥκιστα ἐκπίπτοι ἡ ἕδρη.
And when he evacuates, let him stretch out his legs; for in this way the anus would least protrude.
Ἢν δὲ ὑγραίνηται ὁ ἀρχὸς, καὶ ἰχὼρ ἀποῤῥέῃ, περινίψαι τρυγὶ κεκαυμένῃ καὶ ὕδατι ἀπὸ μυρσίνης, καὶ ἀδίαντον ξηρήνας καὶ κόψας, διασήσας, κατάπασσε.
But if the rectum is damp and secretion flows, wash it around with burnt wine-lees and water of myrtle, and having dried and crushed maidenhair fern, and sifted it, sprinkle it.
Ἢν δὲ αἱμοῤῥοῇ, περινίψας τοῖσιν αὐτοῖσι, χαλκῖτιν καὶ πρίσμα κυπαρίσσου ἢ κέδρου ἢ πίτυος ἢ τερμίνθου τρίψας, συμμίξας τῇ χαλκίτιδι ἴσον, καταπλάσσειν, τὰ ἔξωθεν δὲ κηρωτῇ παχείῃ περιαλείφειν.
But if it bleeds, having washed it around with the same things, and having ground copper ore (chalcitis) and the sawdust of cypress, or cedar, or pine, or turpentine-tree, and having mixed an equal part of each with the copper ore, apply as a poultice, and smear the outside with thick cerate.
Ὁκόταν ἀρχὸς ἐκπίπτῃ καὶ μὴ θέλῃ κατὰ χώρην μένειν, σίλφιον ὅτι ἄριστον καὶ πυκνότατον ξύσας λεπτὸν καταπλάσσειν.
Whenever the rectum protrudes and does not wish to remain in place, having scraped fine the best and most compact silphium, apply it as a poultice.
Καὶ τοῦ πταρμικοῦ φαρμάκου πρὸς τὴν ῥῖνα προστιθέναι καὶ παροξύνειν τὸν ἄνθρωπον.
And apply sneeze-provoking medicine to the nose and excite the person.
Ἢ ὕδατι θερμῷ περιπλύνας σίδια, καὶ στυπτηρίην τρίψας ἐν οἴνῳ λευκῷ, καταχέαι τοῦ ἀρχοῦ, ἔπειτα ῥάκεα ἐμβαλεῖν, καὶ τοὺς μηροὺς ξυνδῆσαι ἡμέρας τρεῖς, καὶ νηστευέτω, οἶνον δὲ πινέτω γλυκύν.
Or having washed pomegranate peels in warm water, and ground alum in white wine, pour it over the rectum, then insert rags, and bind the thighs together for three days; and let him fast, and drink sweet wine.
Ἢν δὲ μηδὲ οὕτω διαχωρέῃ, μίλτον μίξας ὁμοῦ μέλιτι διαχριέτω.
And if it does not even thus return, anoint with red ochre mixed with honey.
Ἀρχὸς ἢν ἐκπίπτῃ καὶ αἱμοῤῥοῇ· ἄρου ῥίζης περιελὼν τὸν φλοιὸν, ἑψεῖν ἐν ὕδατι· ἔπειτα τρίβειν ἄλητον ξυμμίσγων, καὶ καταπλάσσειν θερμόν.
If the rectum protrudes and bleeds: having stripped the bark of arum root, boil it in water; then grind it while mixing in meal, and apply as a warm poultice.
Ἄλλο· τῆς ἀμπέλου τῆς ἀγρίης, ἣν ἔνιοι καλέουσι ψιλώθριον, ταύτης τὰς ῥίζας τὰς ἀπαλωτάτας περιξέσαντα ἑψῆσαι ἐν οἴνῳ μέλανι ἀκρήτῳαὐστηρῷ· ἔπειτα τρίψαντα καταπλάσσειν χλιηρόν· ξυμμίσγειν δὲ καὶ ἄλευρα, καὶ φυρῇν ἐν οἴνῳ λευκῷ καὶ ἐλαίῳ χλιηρῶς.
Another: of the wild vine, which some call psilothrion, having scraped the tenderest roots of this, boil them in undiluted, harsh black wine; then having ground it, apply as a lukewarm poultice; and also mix in wheat flour, and knead it lukewarm with white wine and oil.
Ἄλλο· κωνείου καρπὸν τρίβοντα, παραστάζειν οἶνον λευκὸν εὐώδεα, ἔπειτα καταπλάσσειν χλιηρόν.
Another: grinding the fruit of hemlock, drip in fragrant white wine, then apply as a lukewarm poultice.
Ἢν δὲ φλεγμαίνῃ, κισσοῦ ῥίζαν ἑψήσας ἐν ὕδατι, τρίψας λεῖον, ἄλευρον ξυμμίσγων ὡς κάλλιστον, ἐν οἴνῳ λευκῷ φυρήσας, καταπλάσσειν, καὶ ἄλειφα πρὸς τούτοις ξυμμίξας.
But if it is inflamed, having boiled ivy root in water, and ground it smooth, mixing in the finest flour, and having kneaded it in white wine, apply as a poultice, and mix ointment in addition to these.
Ἄλλο· μανδραγόρου ῥίζαν μάλιστα μὲν χλωρὴν, εἰ δὲ μὴ, ξηρὴν, τὴν μὲν οὖν χλωρὴν ἀποπλύναντα καὶ ταμόντα, ἑψῆσαι ἐν οἴνῳ κεκρημένῳ, καὶ καταπλάσσειν· τὴν δέ γε ξηρὴν τρίψαντα καταπλάσσειν ὁμοίως.
Another: mandrake root, preferably fresh, but if not, dry; the fresh one, having washed and cut it, boil in diluted wine and apply as a poultice; but the dry one, having ground it, apply as a poultice likewise.
Ἄλλο· σικύου πέπονος τὸ ἔνδον τρίψας λεῖον καταπλάσσειν.
Another: having ground smooth the inside of a ripe cucumber, apply as a poultice.

Ἢν δὲ γένηται ὀδύνη καὶ μὴ φλεγμήνῃ, λίτρον ὀπτήσας ἐρυθρὸν, καὶ τρίψας λεῖον, καὶ στυπτηρίην, καὶ ἅλας φώξας, καὶ τρίψας λείους, συμμίξαι ἴσον ἑκάστου· εἶτα πίσσῃ ξυμμίξας ὡς βελτίστῃ, ἐς ῥάκος ἐναλείψας, ἐντιθέναι καὶ καταδεῖν.
But if pain occurs and it is not inflamed, having roasted red natron and ground it smooth, and alum, and having parched salt, and ground them smooth, mix equal parts of each; then having mixed them with the best pitch, and smeared it upon a rag, insert it and bind it on.
Ἄλλο· καππάριος φύλλα χλωρὰ τρίψας, ἐς μαρσίπιον ἐμβαλὼν, προσκαταδεῖν·
Another: having ground fresh leaves of caper, and put them into a small bag, bind it on; and when it seems to burn, remove it, and apply it again.
καὶ ἐπὴν καίειν δοκέῃ, ἀφαιρέειν καὶ αὖθις προστιθέναι. Ἢν δὲ μὴ ᾖ φύλλα καππάριος, τὸν φλοιὸν τῆς ῥίζης κόψας, φυρήσας οἴνῳ μέλανι, τὸν αὐτὸν τρόπον καταδεῖν.
And if there are no caper leaves, having chopped the bark of the root, and kneaded it with black wine, bind it on in the same manner.
Τοῦτο καὶ πρὸς σπληνῶν ὀδύνην ἀγαθόν.
This is also good for pain of the spleen.
Τούτων τῶν καταπλασμάτων δύναται τὰ μὲν ψύχοντα κωλύειν ῥεῖν, τὰ δὲ μαλθάσσοντα καὶ θερμαίνοντα διαχεῖν, τὰ δὲ ἐς ἑωυτὰ ἕλκοντα ξηραίνειν καὶ ἰσχναίνειν.
Of these poultices, some by cooling can prevent discharge, others by softening and warming can disperse, and others by drawing into themselves can dry up and reduce swelling.
Τοῦτο δὲ τὸ νούσημα γίνεται, ὅταν χολὴ καὶ φλέγμα ἐς τοὺς τόπους καταστηρίξῃ.
And this disease occurs when bile and phlegm settle into those places.
Ἀρχοῦ δὲ φλεγμήναντος, διαχρίειν τῷ φαρμάκῳ, ὅπη ἡ ῥητίνη καὶ τὸ ἔλαιον καὶ ὁ κηρὸς καὶ ἡ μολύβδαινα καὶ τὸ στέαρ· ὡς θερμότατα διεῤῥήθησαν καταπλάττεσθαι.
When the rectum is inflamed, anoint with the medication in which are resin, oil, wax, litharge, and fat; let them be applied as a poultice as hot as they were prescribed.
