§1.1ΚΑΙ ἐγένετο λόγος Κυρίου πρὸς Ἰωνᾶν τὸν τοῦ Ἀμαθεὶ λέγων, §1.2ʼἈνάστηθι καὶ πορεύθητι εἰς Νινευὴ τὴν πόλιν τὴν μεγάλην καὶ κήρυξον ἐν αὐτῇ, ὅτι ἀνέβη ἡ κραυγὴ τῆς κακίας αὐτῆς πρὸς μέ. §1.3καὶ ἀνέστη Ἰωνᾶς τοῦ φυγεῖν εἰς Θαρσεὶς ἐκ προσώπου Κυρίου, καὶ κατέβη εἰς Ἰόππην· καὶ εὗρεν πλοῖον βαδίζον εἰς Θαρσείς, καὶ ἔδωκεν τὸ ναῦλον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐνέβη εἰς αὐτὸ τοῦ πλεῦσαι μετʼ αὐτῶν εἰς Θαρσεὶς ἐκ προσώπου Κυρίου.
And the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, "Arise and go to Nineveh, the great city, and proclaim in it, because the cry of its wickedness has come up before me." And Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship bound for Tarshish, and gave its fare and went on board it to sail with them to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.
§1.4Καὶ Κύριος ἐξήγειρεν πνεῦμα ἐπὶ τὴν θάλασσαν, καὶ ἐγένετο κλύδων μέγας ἐν τῇ θαλάσσῃ, καὶ τὸ πλοῖον ἐκινδύνευεν συντριβῆναι.
And the Lord raised up a wind upon the sea, and there was a great storm on the sea, and the ship was in danger of being broken in pieces.
§1.5καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν οἱ ναυτικοὶ καὶ ἀνεβόησαν ἕκαστος πρὸς τὸν θεὸν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐκβολὴν ἐποιήσαντο τῶν σκευῶν τῶν ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν, τοῦ κουφισθῆναι ἀπʼ αὐτῶν·
And the sailors were afraid and cried out each to his god, and made a casting out of the gear in the ship into the sea, in order to be lightened of them.
Ἰωνᾶς δὲ κατέβη εἰς τὴν κοίλην τοῦ πλοίου, καὶ ἐκάθευδεν καὶ ἔρεγχεν.
But Jonah had gone down into the hold of the ship, and was sleeping and snoring.
§1.6καὶ προσῆλθεν πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ πρωρεὺς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Τί σὺ ῥέγχεις;
And the captain came to him and said to him, "Why are you snoring?
ἀνάστα καὶ ἐπικαλοῦ τὸν θεόν σου, ὅπως διασώσῃ ὁ θεὸς ἡμᾶς καὶ μὴ ἀπολώμεθα. §1.7καὶ εἶπευ ἕκαστος πρὸς τὸν πλησίον αὐτοῦ Δεῦτε βάλωμεν κλήρους καὶ ἐπιγνῶμεν τίνος ἕνεκεν ἡ κακία αὕτη ἐστὶν ἐν ἡμῖν. καὶ ἔβαλον κλήρους. καὶ ἔπεσεν ὁ κλῆρος ἐπὶ Ἰωνᾶν.
Arise and call upon your God, so that God may save us and we do not perish." And each said to his neighbor, "Come, let us cast lots and find out on whose account this evil is upon us." And they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.
§1.8καὶ εἶπον πρὸς αὐτόν Ἀπάγγειλον ἡμῖν τίς σου ἡ ἐργασία ἐστίν, καὶ πόθεν ἔρχῃ.
And they said to him, "Declare to us, what is your occupation, and where do you come from?
καὶ ἐκ ποίας χώρας καὶ ἐκ ποίου λαοῦ εἶ σύ; §1.9καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Δοῦλος Κυρίου ἐγὼ εἰμι, καὶ τὸν κύριον θεὸν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἐγῶ σέβομαι, ὃς ἐποίησεν τὴν θάλασσαν καὶ τὴν ξηράν. §1.10καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν οἱ ἄνδρες φόβον μέγαν καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς αὐτόν Τί τοῦτο ἐποίησας; διότι ἔγνωσαν οἱ ἄνδρες ὅτι ἐκ προσώπου Κυρίου ἦν φεύγων, ὅτι ἀπήγγειλεν αὐτοῖς.
And from what country and from what people are you?" And he said to them, "I am a servant of the Lord, and I worship the Lord God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land." And the men were afraid with a great fear, and said to him, "Why have you done this?" For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them.
§1.11καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς αὐτόν Τί σοι ποιήσομεν, καὶ κοπάσει ἡ θάλασσα ἀφʼ ἡμῶν; ὅτι ἡ θάλασσα ἐπορεύετο καὶ ἐξήγειρεν μᾶλλον κλύδωνα.
And they said to him, "What shall we do to you, so that the sea may quiet down for us?" For the sea was raging and raising up more of a storm.
§1.12καὶ εἶπεν Ἰωνᾶς πρὸς αὐτούς Ἄρατέ με καὶ ἐμβάλετέ με εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν, καὶ κοπάσει ἡ θάλασσα ἀφʼ ὑμῶν· διότι ἔγνωκα ἐγὼ ὅτι δι᾿ ἐμὲ ὁ κλύδων ὁ μέγας οὗτος ἐφʼ ὑμᾶς ἐστίν. §1.13καὶ παρεβιάζοντο οἱ ἄνδρες τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι πρὸς τὴν γῆν, καὶ οὐκ ἡδύναντο, ὅτι ἡ θάλασσα ἐπορεύετο καὶ ἐξηγείρετο μᾶλλον ἐπʼ αὐτούς.
And Jonah said to them, "Take me up and cast me into the sea, and the sea will quiet down for you; because I know that on account of me this great storm is upon you." And the men rowed hard to return to the land, but they could not, because the sea raged and was raised up more against them.
§1.14καὶ ἀνεβόησαν πρὸς Κύριον καὶ εἶπαν Μηδαμῶς, Κύριε·
And they cried out to the Lord and said, "By no means, Lord!
μὴ ἀπολώμεθα ἕνεκεν τῆς ψυχῆς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τούτου, καὶ μὴ δῷς ἐφʼ ἡμᾶς αἷμα δίκαιον, διότι σύ, Κύριε, ὃν τρόπον ἐβούλου πεποίηκας. §1.15καὶ ἔλαβον τὸν Ἰωνᾶν καὶ ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν, καὶ ἔστη ἡ θάλασσα ἐκ τοῦ σάλου αὐτῆς.
Let us not perish on account of this man's life, and do not lay upon us innocent blood; because you, Lord, have done as you pleased." And they took Jonah and cast him into the sea, and the sea stopped from its raging.
§1.16καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν οἱ ἄνδρες φόβῳ μεγάλῳ τὸν κύριον, καὶ ἔθυσαν θυσίας τῷ κυρίῳ καὶ εὔξαντο εὐχάς.
And the men feared the Lord with a great fear, and they offered sacrifices to the Lord and made vows.
