In the territory of the Orchomenians, on the left of the road from the Anchisian mountains, on the gentle slope of the mountain is the sanctuary of Hymnian Artemis; the Mantineans also share in it, providing both a priestess and a priest.
For these it is established to remain pure for their whole life, not only in regard to sexual intercourse but also in other matters, and neither baths nor their other way of life are the same for them as for the generality of people, nor do they enter the house of a private man.
I know of other people practicing similar things for a year and no longer, namely those who become banqueters for Ephesian Artemis, who are called Essenes by the citizens.
They also celebrate an annual festival for Hymnian Artemis.
For the Orchomenians, the former city was on the very summit of the mountain, and ruins of an agora and walls remain; but they inhabit the city of our day below the circuit of the ancient wall.
Worth seeing there are a spring from which they draw water, and sanctuaries of Poseidon and of Aphrodite, and the images are of stone.
Near the city is a wooden image of Artemis; it is dedicated in a large cedar tree, and they call the goddess Cedreatis after the cedar tree.
Below the city are mounds of stones standing apart from one another, which were piled up for men who fell in war.
With which of the Peloponnesians, or of other peoples, or of the Arcadians themselves they fought, neither the inscriptions on the tombs indicated nor do the Orchomenians remember.
Opposite the city is Mount Trachy.
The water from the god, flowing through a hollow ravine between the city and Mount Trachy, goes down into another Orchomenian plain, and this plain is great in size, but most of it is a lake.
To one going from Orchomenus and advancing about three stadia, the straight road leads to the city of Caphyae along the ravine itself, and after this on the left along the marshy water; but the other of the roads, for one who has crossed the water flowing through the ravine, is under Mount Trachy.
Along this road, first there is the tomb of Aristocrates, who once by force defiled the virgin priestess of the Hymnian goddess; after the tomb of Aristocrates are springs called Teneiae, and about seven stadia away from the springs is a place Amilus; they say that Amilus was once a city.
At this place again the road divides into two, and one of them leads to Stymphalus, and the other to Pheneus.
On the road to Pheneus a mountain will await you; on this mountain the boundaries of the land of the Orchomenians, the Pheneatians, and the Caphyans meet.
Above the boundaries rises a high cliff; they call the cliff the Caphyatic Rock.
After the boundaries of the cities mentioned, a ravine lies below, and the road to Pheneus leads through it; about the middle of the ravine water rises from a spring, and at the end of the ravine is a place Caryae.
